Long before social media memes dominated the internet, artists sharpened their pencils instead of their keyboards, creating illustrations that captured an entire political moment with a single image. Sometimes they were clever. Sometimes they were brutal. But the best ones were impossible to ignore.

The illustration featured here was created during the heated 2012 presidential election between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. That’s important to understand because this artwork belongs to that specific chapter in American politics. It’s a time capsule from one of the most watched elections in modern history, when emotions ran high and every speech, debate, and campaign stop became material for comedians, cartoonists, and late-night television.

I’ve always believed that political art works best when it refuses to play it safe. Whether someone agreed or disagreed with the message was never the point. The purpose was to create a reaction. If people laughed, argued, or even became uncomfortable, then the illustration had already done what good satire has always done throughout history.

This particular drawing uses one of the oldest forms of comedy known to mankind: bathroom humor. While some people may roll their eyes at it, others immediately understand the joke. The image doesn’t show anything indecent, but it pushes the viewer just close enough to the edge to deliver the punchline through suggestion instead of explicit imagery.

That’s where the artwork becomes more than just a funny picture. It’s an example of how visual metaphors can say something that words alone never could.

THE DOUBLE MEANING MAKES THE JOKE WORK

The title, “Barack Wipes Up With Mitt,” operates on two completely different levels.

The first meaning is political. To “wipe up with” an opponent is an old expression suggesting someone completely defeats another person in a contest. Athletes say it. Fans say it. Political supporters say it during election season. It’s colorful language that’s meant to express confidence before a major competition.

The second meaning comes from the illustration itself.

President Obama is seated on a toilet, with a roll of toilet paper displaying Mitt Romney’s face. Nothing graphic is shown, yet the implication is obvious. The visual joke transforms the common expression into something much more literal, creating a humorous collision between language and imagery.

Then the dialogue pushes the joke even further.

Across the top, Obama humorously says that Mitt Romney doesn’t realize he’s about to be introduced to a part of him that even Michelle hasn’t seen. It’s exaggerated, ridiculous, and intentionally over-the-top. The line exists purely to amplify the absurdity of the visual setup.

At the bottom, the final caption delivers the second punchline by tying everything back to Election Day. Suddenly the bathroom scene becomes a metaphor for political victory, suggesting that Romney would be treated just as harshly at the ballot box as the toilet paper in the illustration.

That’s classic editorial cartoon construction.

Every element works together toward one joke.

WHY POLITICAL CARTOONS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SO AGGRESSIVE

Political cartoons were never designed to be polite.

For centuries they’ve exaggerated noses, ears, facial expressions, body language, clothing, and personalities. Leaders have been drawn as pigs, snakes, clowns, babies, kings, robots, monsters, and every other symbol imaginable.

Nobody escaped.

The goal wasn’t realism.

The goal was impact.

Editorial cartoonists understood that exaggeration grabs attention much faster than a carefully worded essay. A single drawing could summarize weeks of political headlines before a reader even reached the first paragraph of a newspaper.

That’s what makes this illustration part of a much larger artistic tradition.

Whether someone loved Barack Obama or supported Mitt Romney, the cartoon wasn’t pretending to be neutral. It openly embraced one viewpoint while using humor as its delivery system.

That’s exactly what political satire has always done.

THE 2012 ELECTION CREATED ENDLESS MATERIAL

The 2012 presidential race generated an enormous amount of political comedy.

Every debate became instant material for cartoonists.

Every campaign stop produced new jokes.

Every television commercial inspired another parody.

Supporters on both sides confidently predicted overwhelming victory while opponents mocked every speech, every campaign promise, and every public appearance.

This illustration captures that atmosphere perfectly.

Instead of relying on statistics or policy discussions, it expresses political confidence through visual comedy. The message couldn’t be much clearer. According to the cartoon, Obama wasn’t simply planning to win. He intended to completely embarrass his opponent.

Whether history ultimately justified that confidence isn’t even the main point of the drawing.

The humor comes from the certainty.

<picture></picture>

WHEN ART BECOMES A HISTORICAL TIME CAPSULE

One of the things I enjoy most about older illustrations is how they preserve emotions that statistics can’t.

Election results tell us who won.

History books explain what happened.

But cartoons reveal how people actually felt during the campaign.

Years later, viewers may smile because they remember the debates, the campaign commercials, the nonstop political advertisements, and the heated conversations that surrounded that election.

The artwork instantly transports people back to that specific moment in time.

That’s why it’s important to remember that this illustration wasn’t created as commentary on today’s political climate. It belongs to a different era, reflecting the humor, emotions, and campaign atmosphere surrounding the Obama-Romney election.

Viewed through that historical lens, it becomes less about modern politics and more about preserving a memorable chapter of American political culture.

HUMOR HAS ALWAYS BEEN A POLITICAL WEAPON

Some speeches inspire.

Some debates persuade.

Some advertisements convince.

But laughter reaches people in a completely different way.

A joke can sometimes travel farther than a campaign speech because people remember how it made them feel. Political humor has always been one of the fastest ways to challenge authority, celebrate victory, or mock an opponent without delivering a lengthy argument.

This illustration embraces that tradition without apology. It’s loud, exaggerated, and impossible to mistake for anything other than satire. Whether someone laughs or shakes their head, they’re still engaging with the artwork exactly as political cartoons were always intended.

Years after the election ended, the drawing now serves another purpose. It reminds us how quickly political moments become history. Campaign slogans fade. Television commercials disappear. News headlines are forgotten. But a memorable cartoon often survives because it captures the emotion of an era in one unforgettable image.

Looking back now, the illustration feels almost like opening an old scrapbook. It doesn’t ask us to relive old arguments as much as it invites us to remember the atmosphere that surrounded one of the country’s most closely watched presidential contests.

That’s the lasting power of editorial art. It freezes a moment that would otherwise disappear. Whether you agreed with the message or completely rejected it, the illustration still succeeds because it tells a story with humor, symbolism, and fearless exaggeration.

Political cartoons have always been at their best when they refuse to whisper. They shout. They provoke. They entertain. And years later, they remind us that even the most serious elections have always inspired artists to find laughter in the middle of the fight.

<a feeling. Nothing appears obviously wrong. There may be no evidence we can hold in our hands and no logical argument capable of convincing someone else. Yet something deep within us says, Don’t go there. Don’t trust this situation. Leave now. Make that phone call. Stay home today.

My illustration, “The Consequences of Ignored Intuitions,” takes that mysterious human experience and pushes it to its most extreme imaginable conclusion.

At first glance, the drawing depicts a group of attorneys at the offices of Hungwell, Klan and Lynch, inside an office high in the former World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. They appear comfortable, smug and completely absorbed in their own world. Their expressions suggest men who believe that tomorrow belongs to them simply because yesterday did.

But the viewer possesses information that the characters do not.

Behind them, impossibly close to the windows, is an approaching passenger aircraft.

The juxtaposition is intentional.

The men are preoccupied with power, money, status, racial prejudice and their own sense of superiority while an event infinitely larger than their office politics is bearing down upon them. Whatever titles they possess, whatever money they have accumulated and whatever people they believe themselves superior to are about to become meaningless.

That is where the illustration becomes more than a depiction of a historical catastrophe.

It becomes a meditation on human arrogance, intuition and mortality.

THE ARROGANCE OF BELIEVING TOMORROW IS GUARANTEED

Look closely at the central figure.

He is smiling.

He appears extraordinarily pleased with himself, gesturing upward with one finger as though delivering another brilliant pronouncement to the room. His posture communicates confidence bordering on invincibility.

Around him stand other men representing the same environment. Their clothing, expressions and body language establish an atmosphere of corporate authority. These aren’t men expecting their world to collapse. They appear convinced that they control it.

That illusion of control is one of the central themes of the drawing.

Human beings construct enormous systems around themselves—corporations, institutions, wealth, reputations, hierarchies and social status—and eventually we can begin mistaking those systems for immortality.

A person becomes powerful enough that people stop challenging him.

He becomes wealthy enough that consequences seem negotiable.

He becomes surrounded by people who reinforce his worldview.

Eventually, arrogance can produce one of the most dangerous psychological conditions imaginable:

the belief that the rules applying to everyone else somehow do not apply to you.

But mortality doesn’t recognize executive titles.

Time doesn’t recognize bank accounts.

And catastrophe doesn’t stop at the door because someone sitting behind it considers himself important.

THE RACISM IN THE ROOM IS NOT ACCIDENTAL

There is another deliberately uncomfortable layer to this drawing.

These aren’t merely businessmen.

The office is presented as an environment in which racial contempt has become normalized. The signs, papers and satirical language scattered throughout the scene suggest an institution where prejudice has become part of the culture rather than merely the private opinion of one individual.

That distinction matters.

An individual’s prejudice can damage people.

Institutionalized prejudice can damage generations.

The fictional law firm represented in the drawing has built part of its identity around opposing the interests of Black people. Within the imaginary world of the illustration, these men have become so accustomed to exercising power against people they consider beneath them that they no longer recognize their own moral deterioration.

And notice their faces.

Nobody appears ashamed.

Nobody looks uncomfortable.

Nobody appears to be asking whether what they are doing is wrong.

That was intentional.

When enough people inside an institution share the same corruption, corruption can stop feeling like corruption.

It becomes office culture.

It becomes policy.

It becomes tradition.

It becomes “That’s just how things are done around here.”

That phenomenon extends far beyond race. History contains countless examples of institutions where otherwise ordinary people participated in terrible practices because everyone surrounding them had agreed that those practices were acceptable.

The drawing therefore asks a disturbing question:

What happens when the people who believe themselves morally and socially superior become incapable of examining themselves?

THE AIRPLANE CHANGES EVERYTHING

The aircraft behind them provides the brutal answer.

The men don’t see it.

We do.

That is what creates the tension.

The illustration freezes the characters inside perhaps the final ordinary seconds of their lives. Someone is talking. Someone is listening. Someone is thinking about business. Someone is probably thinking about lunch, tomorrow’s meeting or what he will do when he gets home.

Life feels completely normal.

And then life isn’t.

This is one of the most haunting truths surrounding September 11.

Thousands of people began that morning expecting an ordinary Tuesday. People woke up. Showered. Ate breakfast. Kissed spouses goodbye. Took elevators. Answered telephones. Checked emails. Complained about work. Thought about dinner.

They did not know they were participating in the final ordinary moments of their lives.

My drawing uses fictional and exaggerated characters to explore that terrifying uncertainty surrounding human existence.

None of us actually knows what the next hour contains.

<picture></picture>

“I HAD A STRONG FEELING TO CALL OUT OF WORK TODAY”

And then we arrive at the line that gives the artwork its title.

One man says:

“I had a strong feeling to call out of work today. I wonder why?”

That sentence is the heart of the illustration.

Something warned him.

He felt it.

He recognized it strongly enough to remember it.

But he came to work anyway.

Now the audience can see something approaching behind him that explains the feeling he could not explain himself.

Whether someone interprets intuition spiritually, psychologically or biologically is almost secondary to the larger point.

Human beings frequently experience signals before consciously understanding their source.

Sometimes our subconscious notices patterns that our conscious mind hasn’t assembled yet. A person’s behavior feels slightly different. A room feels wrong. Something about a situation makes us uncomfortable even though we cannot immediately articulate why.

Other people interpret those moments spiritually—as warnings, premonitions, divine intervention or communication from something beyond ordinary perception.

I deliberately leave that question open.

The illustration doesn’t tell the viewer where intuition comes from.

It asks whether we should listen when it arrives.

SOMETIMES THE WHISPER COMES BEFORE THE STORM

Intuition doesn’t always announce itself dramatically.

Sometimes it is simply discomfort.

Something doesn’t feel right about a person.

Something tells you not to take a particular road.

You suddenly feel compelled to telephone someone.

You reconsider getting onto a plane.

You decide against entering a building.

You walk away from a relationship everyone else thinks is wonderful.

You delay a decision that looked perfect on paper.

Most of these moments will never become dramatic stories because nothing happens afterward.

And that creates the paradox.

If intuition successfully prevents something terrible from happening, we may never discover what it prevented.

Maybe nothing would have happened.

Maybe everything would have happened.

We will never know.

THERE IS ANOTHER KIND OF INTUITION WE IGNORE

But the drawing contains an additional interpretation that I find equally important.

Perhaps the warning isn’t merely about physical danger.

Perhaps human beings also possess a moral intuition.

We know when something we’re doing isn’t right long before consequences arrive.

We know when we’re mistreating someone.

We know when greed has begun changing us.

We know when our ego has grown too large.

We know when we are exploiting another person.

We know when hatred is consuming us.

We know when the crowd surrounding us is bringing out the worst parts of ourselves.

But just like the man who felt he shouldn’t come to work, we can override that internal warning.

We rationalize.

We explain.

We justify.

We tell ourselves everybody else is doing it.

And eventually the whisper becomes so quiet that we barely hear it anymore.

That may be the deeper consequence of ignored intuition.

The greatest danger isn’t always that something outside of us will eventually destroy us.

Sometimes the greater tragedy is that something inside of us tried repeatedly to save us from becoming the person we eventually became.

POWER CANNOT NEGOTIATE WITH MORTALITY

There is a reason I placed these arrogant fictional businessmen where I did.

I wanted the viewer to experience the collision between perceived power and actual vulnerability.

Inside that office, hierarchy matters.

One man may earn more than another.

One may possess the corner office.

Someone may have authority to hire or fire.

Someone may believe his race, education, wealth or professional status places him above millions of other human beings.

But outside that window is a force that doesn’t care.

In seconds, all those distinctions disappear.

That is not presented as celebration of anyone’s death. The real people murdered on September 11 were innocent human beings whose deaths remain an enormous tragedy. The illustration instead uses an invented scenario against the backdrop of a universally recognizable historical moment to confront the illusion that human status can somehow exempt us from human vulnerability.

It cannot.

Death is perhaps life’s ultimate equalizer.

The billionaire and the homeless man possess vastly different lives, but neither receives an exemption from mortality.

That realization should not make us hopeless.

It should make us humble.

WHAT DID YOUR INNER VOICE TELL YOU?

Ultimately, “The Consequences of Ignored Intuitions” isn’t really about an airplane.

It isn’t even primarily about the fictional businessmen.

It is about that strange conversation every human being occasionally has with himself.

Something doesn’t feel right.

How many times have you said those words?

How many times did you ignore them?

And how many times did you later wish you hadn’t?

There are situations where fear masquerades as intuition, so intuition should never replace reason, evidence or careful judgment. But neither should we automatically dismiss every internal warning simply because we cannot immediately explain it.

Sometimes our minds recognize danger before we can put the danger into words.

Sometimes our conscience recognizes moral danger before our ego is prepared to admit it.

And depending upon one’s spiritual beliefs, some will say that occasionally something even deeper is speaking.

Whatever explanation you choose, the message of this drawing remains the same:

Pay attention.

Because life doesn’t always send a second warning.

And sometimes, while we are busy believing that we control everything around us, something we cannot see is already approaching the window.

                                                                           SCURV
<div It becomes a voice. It becomes a protest. It becomes a mirror held up to society that refuses to look away. This illustration titled “Uncle Sam Visits Mike Vick” was created in that spirit. It was never meant to entertain. It was meant to expose.

At the center of this piece is a hard conversation about justice, punishment, and the way society chooses its outrage. It reflects a time when one of the most controversial legal cases in sports history shook the nation and divided public opinion deeply.

This illustration places a powerful symbol of American authority face-to-face with a fallen athlete inside the federal prison system. It is not just about one man. It is about the system that judged him, the system that shaped public reaction, and the system that often reveals double standards in plain sight.

What makes this piece hit harder is not just the image itself, but the message embedded within it. It forces the viewer to ask uncomfortable questions about morality, war, punishment, and selective outrage.

This is not a comfortable story. It was never meant to be. It is a truth-telling moment captured in ink.

THE BACKDROP: A FALL FROM PUBLIC FAVOR

During the height of his career, Michael Vick was one of the most electrifying figures in professional football. His speed, his arm strength, and his ability to change the game made him a household name. He was celebrated, marketed, and elevated as a symbol of athletic greatness.

But everything changed when he became the center of a federal investigation involving dogfighting operations. The case led to criminal charges, a conviction, and incarceration within the federal prison system. Public opinion shifted quickly and harshly. Sponsors disappeared. Fans split. Headlines turned brutal.

At the time, the national conversation was not just about the crime itself, but about what it represented. Many saw it as a moral breaking point. Others saw it as selective outrage in a country where other forms of violence were often normalized or overlooked depending on context.

This tension is what made the moment so culturally explosive. It was not just about accountability. It was about comparison. It was about what society chooses to punish loudly versus what it accepts quietly.

Inside that climate, this illustration was born.

THE IMAGE: UNCLE SAM AS THE SYMBOL OF POWER AND CONTRADICTION

In the illustration, Uncle Sam stands fully dressed in his iconic American regalia. He is not smiling. He is not neutral. He is positioned in a direct confrontation, making a bold and offensive gesture that immediately demands attention.

Across from him is Michael Vick, shown in a side profile from the neck up, placed in the setting of federal incarceration. The emotional tone is heavy. There is no celebration in his expression. There is only consequence and confinement.

The visual tension between the two figures represents more than a personal story. It represents a national contradiction. The quote placed within the illustration is intentionally sharp and provocative, designed to challenge moral consistency in society. It draws a direct comparison between how certain acts are judged depending on context, politics, and national interest.

The purpose of this imagery is not to excuse wrongdoing. The purpose is to question the hierarchy of outrage and the uneven lens through which justice is often viewed.

When viewers engage with this piece, they are forced into a mental confrontation. Not with the subject alone, but with the system that shapes public perception.

THE FEDERAL PRISON CONTEXT AND PUBLIC RESPONSE

The federal incarceration of Michael Vick became a national headline not only because of his celebrity status, but because it collided with deeper cultural emotions surrounding animal cruelty, accountability, and redemption.

At the time, the response was intense. Public debate expanded beyond sports and entered moral philosophy. Some demanded permanent exclusion from professional life. Others believed in rehabilitation and second chances.

This is where the illustration steps in and interrupts the emotional cycle. It does not tell the viewer what to feel. It forces the viewer to examine why they feel it.

The presence of Uncle Sam in the illustration is not random. It is a symbolic representation of national identity, authority, and contradiction. It raises questions about how justice is applied, how punishment is assigned, and how society ranks suffering and wrongdoing.

The message is not simple. It is layered. It is uncomfortable by design.

THE DEEPER MESSAGE: SELECTIVE MORALITY AND NATIONAL CONTRADICTIONS

At its core, this illustration is about selective morality. It is about how societies often respond strongly to certain actions while overlooking or justifying others depending on political framing, cultural narrative, or national interest.

It challenges the viewer to think beyond emotion and into structure. Why are some acts condemned with permanent branding while others are absorbed into history, celebrated, or quietly ignored?

This is not about excusing harm. It is about questioning consistency. It is about recognizing that justice systems exist within larger cultural systems that shape perception long before judgment is ever delivered.

The illustration becomes a conversation starter about how narratives are built, how public figures are destroyed, and how redemption is either offered or denied depending on the audience.

ART THAT REFUSES TO BE SILENT

This piece was never designed to be comfortable. It was designed to be remembered. It was designed to stay in the mind long after the first reaction fades.

It stands as a reminder that art can challenge authority without asking permission. It can raise questions that textbooks avoid. It can expose contradictions that headlines soften.

When I look at this illustration, I do not just see two figures. I see a reflection of a society wrestling with its own sense of justice. I see the tension between punishment and perspective. I see the struggle between image and reality.

The conversation it sparks is still relevant today. Because the questions it raises have not gone away. They are still here, living in the same system, repeating in different forms.

And maybe that is the real purpose of this work. Not to give answers, but to force awareness.

Because once you see the contradiction, you cannot unsee it.

And that is where real thinking begins.
<div article you can publish on your blog about the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church scandal that exploded in 2010 — plus a candid section about your controversial illustration, the ethical and legal risks of sexually explicit depictions of real people, and practical suggestions for presenting provocative political art responsibly.

The story in short

In late 2010, four men publicly accused Bishop Eddie L. Long — leader of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church near Atlanta — of coercing them into sexual relationships when they were teenagers. The allegations rocked one of the Southeast’s largest megachurches, generated national headlines and protests, and were later settled out of court in 2011. The civil suits were dismissed with prejudice after settlement, leaving many questions unresolved and long-lasting debate about power, accountability, and secrecy inside powerful churches.

Background: New Birth and Eddie Long

Eddie Long rose from modest beginnings to build New Birth into a multimillion-member megachurch with regional influence, high visibility and substantial financial assets. For years he was a charismatic figure on the national Black church stage — preaching prosperity and spiritual mentorship while cultivating a close inner circle of young “spiritual sons.” His public persona and pastoral power made the later accusations especially explosive.

The allegations and the legal timeline

September 2010: Civil lawsuits were filed by young men who said Long had used his pastoral authority to coerce them into sexual relationships when they were teens. Multiple media outlets reported on successive suits and additional accusers.

2010–2011: The allegations triggered intense media coverage, parishioner division, and public protests calling for his resignation. Georgia law, and the details in the complaints, meant criminal investigations did not lead to criminal charges; the suits were pursued as civil actions.

May–August 2011: The civil cases were settled out of court in May 2011; the suits were later dismissed with prejudice, which prevented the same claims from being refiled. Terms were not publicly disclosed.

Those are the key legal milestones. Because the settlements were confidential, many factual questions remained publicly unanswered — and that lack of final, public adjudication intensified the controversy rather than settling it.

Public reaction and institutional fallout

The scandal exposed several dynamics that recur in high-profile religious controversies:

Loyalty vs. accountability: Many congregants publicly stood by Long, while others left or protested, showing how devotion and institutional identity can blunt immediate accountability.

Media and narrative control: Coverage varied across outlets; the story became a national conversation about clergy misconduct and the power imbalance between senior pastors and young congregants.

Long-term consequences: Even after settlement, the episode left a scar on Long’s legacy and on New Birth’s public standing. Years later his death in January 2017 reopened conversations about what survivors experienced and how institutions respond.

What survivors and critics said

Several of the men who brought the suits spoke publicly later — writing, speaking in interviews, and collaborating on projects that detailed their versions of events. Their accounts framed the scandal as a pattern of exploitation of spiritual authority, and they have continued to press for public acknowledgement.

Why this mattered beyond New Birth

The Eddie Long case became part of a broader national discussion about abuse, consent, and pastoral power inside charismatic and megachurch structures. It raised questions about oversight, financial transparency, the pastoral “mentor” model, and how religious communities protect (or fail to protect) vulnerable people in youth programs and mentorship relationships.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It has been the heartbeat of the community, the foundation for survival, and the sanctuary where people found strength during times of struggle. But in recent years, many have begun to ask hard questions about what is really happening behind the pulpit.

One of those questions is captured in a provocative illustration featuring the late Pastor Carlton Pearson. While the image is meant to be comical and controversial, the deeper point it raises is no laughing matter. It challenges us to ask: has the Black church shifted so far from its original principles that it is now run by “fairy tales”?

This is not just about one man. It is about a wider issue within the institution that has shaped generations of Black people. The rise of openly gay pastors, and the countless others who remain hidden, has created a storm of conflict inside the church.

Some see this as progress—an acceptance of different lifestyles within a spiritual space. Others see it as a betrayal of scripture, a compromise of the very foundation on which the church was built. The clash of belief and behavior has left many confused, hurt, and questioning their faith leaders.

Whether we agree or not, the reality is this: the Black church is changing. And it is time for us to face these changes directly, with honesty and courage.

The Hidden Truth Behind the Pulpit

For generations, the Black church has served as both a spiritual refuge and a stage. Behind the pulpit, pastors are celebrated as leaders, counselors, and even celebrities. But in the shadows, many have lived double lives—preaching holiness on Sunday while hiding their true selves during the week.

This “undercover legion” of pastors has long been whispered about, yet rarely confronted. The pressure to appear righteous, combined with the fear of judgment, has driven many to live in secrecy. In the end, the congregation is left with leaders whose words do not match their actions.

The Illustration of Carlton Pearson

The artwork of Carlton Pearson captures this hypocrisy in bold imagery. His kneeling posture, the suggestive candy cane, the reptilian tail holding a rainbow flag, and the jar of “booty butter” send a message that cannot be ignored. It ridicules the hidden behaviors that many suspect but few dare to discuss openly.

The image is not about shaming one man—it is about holding up a mirror to the institution itself. The Black church, which once stood as the strongest moral guide for the people, now faces accusations of being corrupted from within.

Scripture Versus Reality

The Bible speaks clearly on certain matters, including relationships between men and women. For centuries, this has been the foundation of church teaching. Yet in practice, the reality is far different. Many of the very men who condemn same-sex relations from the pulpit are secretly involved in them.

This gap between scripture and reality creates a dangerous contradiction. Congregants are left wondering: are we being led by truth, or by lies? If the leaders cannot live what they preach, then what becomes of the message itself?

The Impact on the Community

The Black community has always leaned on the church for guidance. But when hypocrisy is exposed, the damage runs deep. Trust is broken. Faith is shaken. Young people, already drifting away from traditional religion, see the scandals and turn away completely.

This erosion of trust weakens the entire community. If the church loses its moral authority, then what takes its place? Too often, the answer has been nothing. And without a guiding institution, the people are left vulnerable to confusion, division, and spiritual emptiness.

A Question of Leadership

At the core of the issue is leadership. Can the Black church continue to follow men and women who live in contradiction? Can it survive when its leaders put image above integrity?

The truth is, leadership built on deception cannot last. No matter how powerful the sermons, no matter how large the congregations, lies eventually collapse under their own weight. A new standard of leadership must rise—one rooted in honesty, even if it is uncomfortable.

Looking Forward

The Black church cannot heal unless it faces its truth. Whether that truth is about sexuality, hidden sins, or financial corruption, the time for silence is over. The people deserve clarity. The community deserves leaders who live what they preach.

Until then, the question raised by the illustration remains painfully valid: is the Black church now run by fairy tales—or by truth?

The time has come for us to separate tradition from deception. For too long, the Black church has protected its image while ignoring the cracks in its foundation. Those cracks are now too wide to be hidden.

We must stop turning a blind eye to the double lives of our leaders. Silence only feeds corruption. The longer we ignore the truth, the more damage it does to the faith of our people.

The challenge is not just for pastors, but for the community itself. Will we demand honesty, or will we settle for showmanship? Will we accept fairy tales, or will we insist on truth?

The legacy of the Black church is too important to let it collapse under lies. It must be rebuilt—not on fear or fantasy, but on integrity and courage. Only then can it regain its place as the true heart of the community.

In the end, this is not about one man, or one illustration. It is about the future of our people. And that future depends on whether we choose truth over tales.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It hides in classrooms, banks, courts, and the stories told on our screens. Power teaches us how to think, what to want, and even what to believe about ourselves. For Black people, power has not been neutral. It has been a weapon.

Art can reveal what polite speeches cover up. A drawing, a sketch, an illustration can cut through noise and force the truth into view. My work asks the question no one wants to ask: who really controls these systems, and why do we keep paying the price?

History is not still. Since the mid-20th century, the world has shifted — wars fought, borders redrawn, economies linked. But every move, every global shift, has found its way into the lives of Black people in America. The result has been deeper struggle, sharper obstacles, and less space to breathe.

Institutions do not fall into place by accident. They are built and guarded. Education, law, finance, housing, politics, banking, and media have all been arranged like weapons on a battlefield. Their aim is clear: to protect wealth for some while draining life and wealth from us.

But what has been used to control us can also be used to free us. The question is not only who controls these systems today. The question is when will we claim them for ourselves.

The Classroom Trap

Education should be the key. Instead, it’s been a lock. Underfunded schools, biased lessons, and teachers who doubt our children. That’s not a mistake — that’s design. To break free, we need schools that belong to us, schools that teach our story, schools that sharpen our minds for our fight.

Law: The Hand That Strikes

The law claims to protect. But for us, it often punishes. From stop-and-frisk to mass incarceration, the system has devoured Black families. Justice will not come by begging. It comes by rewriting laws, by tearing out roots of bias, and by building protection that we control.

Finance: Starving the Dream

Banks decide who eats and who starves. Black businesses are denied loans. Families are charged higher rates. Dreams are delayed until they die. The solution is not charity. It is building Black banks, credit unions, and cooperative lending that feed our people and starve the exploiters.

Housing: Stolen Ground

Home is wealth. Home is safety. But redlining and discrimination stole both from us. Our neighborhoods were drained, our land taken, our value crushed. To heal, we must hold the land. Land trusts, co-ops, ownership by the people — so our communities cannot be bought and sold again.

Politics: Bought Voices

Politicians claim to represent us, but many are bought before they even speak. Our votes have power, but only when we demand more than speeches. We must run for office ourselves. We must fund leaders we control, not leaders controlled by others.

Banking Institutions: The Silent Chains

Banks hold the keys to the vault. But the locks were never built for us. Their rules bleed our wealth dry. The answer is not waiting for fairness. The answer is taking our money back into our hands, creating systems where our dollars build us, not destroy us.

Media: The Mirror of Lies

Look at the screen. How do they show us? As criminals, as clowns, as shadows of our true selves. Media is not harmless — it shapes belief. When they own the story, they own the image. We must own our platforms, tell our truths, and control the lens that shows our lives.

The Web of Control

No system works alone. Schools feed prisons. Media shapes laws. Banks choke neighborhoods. It is a web — designed to trap. To break it, we must fight on every front at once. One victory is not enough. We must strike until the whole web falls.

History’s Turning Point

Since 1948, the world order shifted. Nations fought for land and power, and America bent itself to serve new interests. Those changes reached into every corner of our lives, pulling strings, tightening chains. We cannot ignore global moves, but our focus must be the local battle — where we live, where we work, where we build.

Culture: The Hidden Script

Culture trains the mind. It whispers: “This is normal. This is all you deserve.” Textbooks, music, movies — many of them erase us, or teach us to bow. The cure is culture that heals, art that resists, and stories that remind our children who they really are.

Building Power: The Roadmap

Build schools that teach our truth.

Control banks that lend to our people.

Protect housing through ownership and community trusts.

Run for office, write laws, and wield power.

Build and fund media platforms that cannot be silenced.

Tear down the criminal justice trap and build systems of true protection.

Artists: The Unseen Soldiers

Art is not decoration. It is a weapon. It cracks silence. It demands a response. Every stroke of the pen is a warning: we see the lies, and we refuse them. This illustration is not just a picture. It is a call to rise.

The systems around us are not broken. They are working exactly as they were built — to use us, to profit from us, to keep us locked down. They were never designed with our freedom in mind.

That means fairness will not fall into our laps. Justice will not be handed out like charity. Power never gives itself away. Power must be taken.

Our task is not to ask for seats in someone else’s house. It is to build our own. Schools, banks, media, housing, politics — all under our control, all serving our future. That is not a dream. That is a demand.

The next generation is watching. If we leave them nothing but chains, they will curse our names. If we leave them power, they will carry the fight further than we ever could.

So let the question be asked: Was Karl Marx correct? The answer does not rest in theory, but in action. What matters is what we build, what we guard, and what we refuse to surrender. The time to master our own affairs is now.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" We are told to wave flags, salute, and accept the stories we are given without question. But what happens when those stories are built on lies? What happens when truth is buried, and those who question it are labeled as dangerous?

I created a political illustration years ago titled Feeling Patriotic, America? Then Keep Drinking the Kool-Aid. It was designed to challenge the false comfort of blind belief. The picture showed Osama bin Laden and Christopher Dorner wrapped in the American flag, sitting side by side, with the Kool-Aid Man resting on piles of money. Behind them was a sign that read, Federal Terrorist Job Recruitment Unit.

The message was not about glorifying either man. It was about exposing how America manipulates the public with stories that benefit power and silence truth. Many people believe what they are told, even when it makes no sense. They drink the Kool-Aid and call it patriotism.

The Black community especially must be careful not to fall into this trap. We cannot afford to blindly follow the narratives of a system that has long proven itself untrustworthy toward us. Every generation, we are given stories that redirect our energy away from truth and toward loyalty to those who oppress us.

This illustration was meant to shock, but it was also meant to wake us up. It asked the question: How long will we allow ourselves to be fooled? How long will we keep drinking the Kool-Aid?

The Kool-Aid of Lies

The Kool-Aid represents deception. It is sweet, colorful, and easy to swallow. Yet inside, it is poison. Governments, corporations, and media serve this Kool-Aid daily. They tell us who the villains are, who the heroes are, and what events mean—yet rarely do we get the full truth.

For the Black community, this deception has been especially harmful. From slavery to mass incarceration, from false wars to false promises, we are told lies to keep us controlled. These lies are presented with flags, songs, and speeches. But beneath the surface, it is about money, power, and control.

Wrapping Lies in the Flag

In the illustration, Dorner and bin Laden were wrapped in the American flag. That was no accident. It symbolized how America hides its sins behind patriotism. Whenever truth gets too close, the system pulls out the flag. Those who dare to expose corruption are labeled enemies. Those who commit crimes in service of power are painted as patriots.

The flag becomes a mask, covering up hypocrisy. It protects those who profit while silencing those who speak out. For our community, this is a reminder: we must look past the symbols. We must study history and see the patterns for ourselves.

The Federal Terrorist Job Recruitment Unit

That sign in the background—Federal Terrorist Job Recruitment Unit—was a metaphor. It spoke to how America trains, funds, and supports violence when it benefits power. Wars are started under false reasons. Leaders are created, then destroyed, when they are no longer useful. And the people are left believing a story that was never real in the first place.

For Black people, this reality should teach us not to trust blindly. If entire wars and national tragedies can be staged or misrepresented, what else are we being told that is not true?

The Kool-Aid Man sitting on piles of money reveals the real motive: profit. Wars, prisons, weapons, surveillance—these are billion-dollar industries. The suffering of people becomes business. The illusion of patriotism keeps the machine running.

For our community, this means we must be careful not to become tools in someone else’s plan. We must recognize when we are being used for labor, votes, or distraction while the real wealth flows elsewhere.

My illustration was never meant to praise or excuse violence. It was meant to force people to think. It was meant to shake the illusion that everything we are told is the truth. Because if we keep drinking the Kool-Aid, we remain powerless.

The Black community must rise above deception. We must sharpen our awareness, question everything, and refuse to be manipulated by symbols and speeches. Our survival depends on it.

Patriotism without truth is slavery. It chains the mind even when the body is free. We cannot afford to love a system that does not love us back. We must build loyalty to truth, not lies.

The future of our people depends on seeing through illusions. The flag, the Kool-Aid, the stories—all of these are distractions if we do not examine them carefully. Our focus must remain on unity, strength, and independence.

So, I ask again: Feeling Patriotic, America? Then Keep Drinking the Kool-Aid. Or, for those who are awake, the question becomes: When will we put the cup down and finally see the truth?

LanceScurvX
<p class="button-wrapper" The Whore of Babylon, my 2008 illustration, is a raw and unapologetic portrayal of this nation's descent—rotting from the inside out, drowning in its own lies, corruption, and hypocrisy. The so-called beacon of democracy is nothing more than a flickering neon sign outside a brothel, selling its soul for cheap labor, endless wars, and corporate greed.

Lady Liberty: From Icon to Degenerate

LanceScurv is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

In the forefront, we see the ultimate symbol of American greatness, Lady Liberty, slumped on a curb in Japan, stripped of her dignity. The torch she once held high to guide the world now replaced with a bottle of malt liquor, her veins punctured by a needle, her body tattooed with the Masonic markings of the hidden hands that have always controlled this empire. Her legs, spread and diseased, betray the truth—America has whored itself out, selling morality for profit, pimped by Wall Street, the military-industrial complex, and the political elite. Next to her, Uncle Sam’s iconic hat lies discarded like yesterday’s trash, surrounded by drug paraphernalia.

The American flag, once paraded as the ultimate symbol of pride and power, is now soiled—literally. Feces and filth stain the stars and stripes because America has defecated on its own ideals, spreading imperialism under the guise of freedom while its own people rot in the streets. A used condom beside it tells the real story: America has been screwing the world for centuries, but now, the world is watching as she falls apart.

The 9/11 Betrayal: A Nation’s Self-Inflicted Wound

In the background, history’s most grotesque theater plays out. President George W. Bush, puppet of the deep state, hands a check to Osama bin Laden in front of the flaming Twin Towers. The deal is done. The job was never about justice or patriotism—it was an inside job, a staged disaster to fuel endless war, corporate contracts, and the stripping away of civil liberties under the Patriot Act. Thousands died, not for freedom, but for profit.

The World's Revenge

And who stands in the background watching this disgrace unfold? A Japanese man, camera in hand, grinning as he captures the image of America’s collapse. Sweet revenge. Hiroshima’s mushroom cloud still lingers in the collective memory of his people, a reminder that the so-called "good guys" dropped hellfire on civilians and called it justice. Now, he gets to watch the empire that once dictated morality crumble under its own filth.

Next to him, a black man with dreadlocks and a camera, built from over 400 years of forced labor, still shackled—because let's be real, slavery never ended, it just evolved. America was built on his ancestors' backs, and yet their descendants are still fighting for basic human rights. The chains remain, symbolic of a system designed to keep them in place while pretending progress has been made.

Beside him, shadowy figures dangle from trees—strange fruit, the ghosts of lynched souls who never got justice. America, the land that preaches equality, has blood on its hands. No amount of historical revisionism can wash it away.

Then there’s the Native American, the original owner of this stolen land, wearing a shirt that says it plainly: Payback is a Bitch. Manifest Destiny, genocide, broken treaties—America was never great; it was built on slaughter. The ghosts of its crimes are not forgotten.

The End of an Era

This is the reality. America, once a self-proclaimed empire, has become a global joke. The world watches as it overdoses on its own corruption, as it sells itself for scraps, as it drowns in the blood of the innocent. The dollar is crumbling, the people are divided, and the nation is imploding from within.

The Whore of Babylon isn’t just a drawing—it’s a prophecy. Rome fell. Babylon fell. And America? America is next.

Share

Subscribe now
