There comes a time in life when you have to stop, take a deep breath, and ask yourself what in the world is happening to humanity. We have more technology, more ways to communicate, more access to information, and more opportunities to learn about one another than any generation before us. Yet, somehow, we seem to be losing something that should come naturally to every human being: the ability to care about another person’s life, respect another person’s dignity, and recognize that we are all here for a limited amount of time. Welcome to a world where people can watch suffering unfold on a screen, argue about it, make jokes about it, and move on with their day as though nothing happened. Something about that should trouble every one of us.

I’ve been thinking deeply about the tragic loss of a young boy whose life was taken at just fifteen years old. When I first considered speaking about this situation, I realized that I had too many thoughts, too many questions, and too many emotions to squeeze into one ordinary conversation. Sometimes, a tragedy reaches beyond the immediate circumstances and forces you to examine the condition of the society in which it happened. You begin thinking about childhood, family, violence, peer pressure, community, and the values we are passing down to the next generation. You also begin asking yourself how a young person can become so disconnected from the value of another human life that cruelty and violence become possible.

Living in Ghana has given me a different perspective on family, community, and the everyday interactions between people. I see young people who are courteous, respectful, curious, and eager to engage with the world around them. That doesn’t mean every person here is good or that Ghana is free from violence, jealousy, or wrongdoing. No country has a monopoly on goodness, and no country is completely free from evil. However, living in a different cultural environment can make you notice the importance of the values that surround you, especially when those values involve family connections, neighborhood relationships, and the responsibility people feel toward one another. Sometimes, distance gives you the opportunity to look back at the place you once called home with fresh eyes.

My heart goes out to every family that has experienced the unbearable pain of losing a child, particularly under violent circumstances. There is no easy way to explain the loss of someone so young, someone who should have had decades ahead of him to learn, grow, make mistakes, discover his gifts, and experience the many beautiful things life can offer. A child should not have to navigate the world wondering whether someone will target him simply because he is different, unfamiliar, or vulnerable. Parents should not have to live with the fear that their children can leave home for an ordinary day and never return. When a tragedy like this occurs, we have a responsibility to look beyond the immediate headlines and examine the attitudes, choices, and social conditions that allow cruelty to grow.

What troubles me most is the larger question behind these painful events: are we becoming so divided, so consumed by our personal desires, and so disconnected from our conscience that we are gradually losing our humanity? I’m not talking about pretending that the past was perfect or that every person once lived according to some golden standard of morality. Evil has always existed, and human beings have always struggled with jealousy, greed, hatred, and selfishness. But when disrespect becomes entertainment, aggression becomes a badge of honor, and compassion gets mistaken for weakness, we have to ask ourselves where we’re headed. This conversation goes beyond one tragedy, one city, one country, or one generation. It concerns the kind of human beings we are becoming and the kind of world we are leaving behind.

THE TRAGEDY THAT FORCES US TO LOOK WITHIN

When a young life is lost, the first response should be compassion for the family and everyone whose world has been shattered. We should never become so comfortable with violence that another family’s grief becomes just another story to scroll past. Behind every headline is a real human life, a family with memories, a future that will never unfold as expected, and people who must somehow learn to live with an absence they never wanted. We can discuss the larger issues surrounding a tragedy without forgetting the people who are suffering through it. In fact, genuine concern for the victims should be the reason we examine those issues in the first place.

A tragedy involving a child also forces us to confront the way young people learn to treat one another. Where do they learn that humiliating somebody is funny? Where do they learn that intimidation is a sign of strength? Where do they learn that a person’s differences give them permission to mistreat that person? These attitudes don’t always appear out of nowhere. They can be influenced by the home, the neighborhood, the school environment, entertainment, social media, and the people a young person admires. None of these influences automatically determines a child’s future, but all of them can contribute to the values that child develops.

We also have to be careful not to condemn an entire population because of the actions of particular individuals. There are decent families, compassionate young people, and responsible adults in every society. There are people who will stand up for a stranger, protect a vulnerable child, and risk their own comfort to do what is right. We must never allow anger over a terrible event to blind us to those people. The goal should be accountability for wrongdoing and a serious examination of the conditions that encourage it, not the creation of another group of innocent people to hate.

At the same time, we cannot use the existence of good people as an excuse to ignore destructive behavior. Both truths can exist together. There can be good people in a community while serious problems remain unresolved. There can be families doing their best while young people around them become caught up in dangerous patterns. We can recognize the positive qualities of a society while still asking difficult questions about violence, alienation, and the loss of respect for human life. Honest reflection requires us to hold more than one thought in our minds at the same time.

WHAT HAPPENED TO COMMUNITY?

When I think back to growing up in New York, I remember a time when neighborhood life involved far more everyday interaction. Children played, neighbors talked, families knew one another, and people could develop relationships without needing to broadcast every moment to an audience. Life was not perfect, and there were certainly dangers and divisions, but there was a sense that ordinary human contact mattered. You could encounter somebody on the street, exchange a few words, share a laugh, or help someone who needed a little assistance without immediately wondering what that person wanted from you.

I remember the simple beauty of being able to help somebody without having the gesture turned into something suspicious. If a person was short a little money at a checkout counter, you could help cover the difference and move on with your day. If somebody needed directions, you could offer them. If a neighbor was struggling, people could sometimes come together to make the burden lighter. Those interactions did not require a camera, an online announcement, or thousands of likes. They were small acts of kindness that reminded us we were living among other human beings rather than competing against them.

Today, many people feel disconnected even while they are surrounded by constant communication. We can speak to somebody across the world in seconds, yet struggle to hold a meaningful conversation with the person sitting beside us. We can collect hundreds or thousands of online connections while having nobody we trust enough to call when life becomes difficult. We can watch the personal lives of strangers for hours and remain unaware of the loneliness, frustration, or pain growing inside our own homes. Communication has become easier, but meaningful connection still requires effort, honesty, patience, and a willingness to see other people as more than sources of entertainment.

Community is not simply a collection of people who live near one another. It’s a network of shared responsibility, mutual respect, and concern for what happens to the people around us. A healthy community understands that the safety and well-being of its children cannot be treated as somebody else’s problem. It recognizes that a child who is bullied, isolated, or repeatedly humiliated needs adults who are willing to pay attention. It understands that a young person who begins displaying cruelty needs correction and guidance, not an audience cheering him on.

We should be asking ourselves how we can rebuild that sense of responsibility. Parents have a role, schools have a role, community leaders have a role, and young people have a role. We cannot expect one institution to repair every problem while everybody else refuses to participate. Nor can we pretend that every family has equal resources, equal support, or equal opportunities. But wherever we have influence, we can help create an environment where kindness is respected, violence is challenged, and children understand that another person’s dignity is not theirs to destroy.

WHEN ENTERTAINMENT STARTS SHAPING OUR VALUES

One of the most troubling developments of the modern era is the way entertainment can influence the way people think about themselves and one another. Music, movies, online personalities, and viral videos can introduce people to ideas that shape their behavior, especially when they are young and still trying to understand their place in the world. Entertainment can inspire creativity, teach valuable lessons, bring people together, and give a voice to experiences that might otherwise be ignored. But it can also normalize cruelty, glorify humiliation, and make reckless behavior look attractive.

The problem isn’t that every song, film, or online video is responsible for the problems in society. Human behavior is far too complicated for that kind of simplistic explanation. The problem begins when people stop examining the messages they consume and start treating everything presented to them as a model for living. If a young person repeatedly sees aggression rewarded with attention, disrespect celebrated as confidence, and revenge presented as the only acceptable response to an insult, those messages can influence how that person interprets everyday conflict.

Social media can intensify this problem because attention has become a form of currency. Some people will say almost anything, expose private information, humiliate strangers, or provoke an argument simply because controversy attracts an audience. The more extreme the behavior, the more likely it may be to generate a reaction. A person who might once have behaved foolishly in front of a small group can now turn that behavior into a performance for thousands of people. And when the audience rewards the performance, the person may become even more willing to repeat it.

Think about what that does to the human mind when it becomes a daily habit. Instead of asking whether an action is wise, compassionate, or morally defensible, people may begin asking whether it will attract attention. Instead of considering the harm they could cause, they may focus on whether the reaction will make them popular. Instead of developing an identity based on character and personal growth, they may build one around the approval of strangers who will forget about them as soon as the next controversy appears.

We need to regain control over what we allow into our minds. That means thinking critically about the entertainment we consume, the people we follow, and the attitudes we reward with our attention. It means understanding that popularity is not proof of wisdom and that a large audience is not evidence of good character. We should be able to enjoy entertainment without allowing it to dictate our values. We should be able to participate in online discussions without surrendering our judgment to a crowd.

THE DANGEROUS CULTURE OF DIVISION

Division has become profitable in many corners of modern life. Anger attracts attention, outrage generates arguments, and conflict keeps people watching. There will always be legitimate disagreements between people, and we should never confuse unity with the requirement that everybody think alike. A healthy society allows people to question ideas, challenge injustice, and speak honestly about their experiences. The danger comes when disagreement turns into a permanent state of hostility and people begin treating every difference as evidence that somebody else is an enemy.

Look at how quickly people can be encouraged to distrust one another because of nationality, culture, religion, race, income, political beliefs, or personal lifestyle. Instead of learning about one another, they search for reasons to feel superior. Instead of asking thoughtful questions, they repeat insults. Instead of recognizing shared struggles, they compete to prove that their own group deserves more respect than everybody else. This way of thinking creates a world where people become attached to their divisions because those divisions give them a sense of identity.

The separation between African Americans and Africans born on the continent is one example of how differences can be turned into unnecessary hostility. There are meaningful differences in history, culture, language, upbringing, and daily experience. Those differences deserve honest discussion. But they do not have to become reasons for contempt. People can learn from one another without pretending their experiences are identical. They can disagree about social issues while still recognizing shared humanity. They can acknowledge painful misunderstandings without allowing those misunderstandings to define every future interaction.

The same principle applies far beyond the African diaspora. People from different backgrounds can become so focused on protecting their own group identity that they forget the basic human values that should guide every interaction. We can find ourselves defending the behavior of people who share our background while condemning the same behavior in somebody else. We can become so invested in winning an argument that we stop caring whether our position is fair. When loyalty to a group becomes more important than loyalty to truth, our judgment begins to weaken.

We should ask who benefits when ordinary people become too hostile to cooperate. Who gains when neighbors distrust one another, families become divided, and entire communities spend their energy fighting over labels? Division can distract people from shared problems that require collective action. It can make cooperation appear dangerous and compromise look like weakness. We do not need to believe that every disagreement is secretly engineered by somebody else to recognize that people can exploit our divisions for their own advantage. The best defense is to think independently, examine the evidence, and refuse to let anger do our thinking for us.

ENVY, INSECURITY, AND THE NEED TO FEEL SUPERIOR

One of the ugliest features of human behavior is the tendency to turn another person’s success into a personal insult. Somebody develops a skill, improves their health, builds a business, creates something beautiful, or simply becomes more comfortable in their own skin, and instead of feeling inspired, another person becomes resentful. They begin looking for flaws, spreading rumors, making dismissive comments, or finding ways to reduce that person’s accomplishments to something undeserved.

I’ve always believed that envy is the opposite side of motivation. When you see somebody doing something well, you have a choice. You can study what they did, recognize the effort involved, and allow their example to motivate you to improve your own life. Or you can sit there feeling offended because their progress reminds you of the work you have not done. One response turns another person’s success into an opportunity. The other turns it into a source of resentment.

That distinction matters because we cannot all have the same talents, opportunities, or circumstances. Somebody else may be better at a particular skill, more successful in a particular business, or further along in a particular stage of life. Their progress does not erase your potential. Their accomplishments do not prevent you from discovering what you can contribute. You have your own abilities, responsibilities, and possibilities to explore. The question is whether you will put your energy into developing them or waste that energy resenting what somebody else has achieved.

Insecurity can make people behave in ways that seem completely irrational. They may attempt to embarrass somebody who has done nothing to them, compete with somebody who never entered a competition, or sabotage a relationship because they fear being overlooked. Sometimes the person they resent has no idea a competition exists. They are simply living their life, pursuing their interests, and trying to improve themselves, while somebody else has quietly turned their existence into a personal challenge.

But we should also be careful not to assume that every disagreement, criticism, or awkward interaction comes from jealousy. Sometimes people have legitimate concerns. Sometimes they misunderstand us. Sometimes we are the ones who need to change. Discernment requires more than automatically labeling everyone who disagrees with us as an enemy. It means observing behavior over time, examining the facts, and being honest enough to recognize when we may be wrong.

The real goal is not to become obsessed with identifying jealous people. The goal is to become so focused on your own growth that you have less time to participate in pointless competitions. You can recognize destructive behavior without making it the center of your life. You can protect your work, your peace, and your relationships without spending every waking moment wondering who might be against you. Your energy is valuable. Spend it on something that builds rather than something that consumes.

WHY SOME PEOPLE CANNOT STAND YOUR LIGHT

There are times when you may encounter somebody who seems uncomfortable with your confidence, enthusiasm, or determination. You may be working toward a goal, developing your abilities, or finding a sense of peace that you did not have before, and suddenly somebody begins making comments designed to discourage you. They may tell you that you think you’re better than everybody else, that you should stop trying so hard, or that your ambitions are unrealistic. Sometimes their criticism may contain useful feedback, but sometimes it may reveal their own discomfort with the choices you are making.

I often think about the image of a floodlight shining in a dark backyard. When that light comes on, you suddenly see insects and creatures that were difficult to notice in the darkness. The light did not necessarily create them. It made them visible. In a similar way, when somebody becomes more focused, disciplined, or confident, that change can reveal uncomfortable truths about the people around them. It may expose differences in priorities or bring existing tensions to the surface.

But let me make something clear: your light should not become an excuse to believe you are superior to everybody else. Genuine growth should make you more responsible, not more arrogant. Confidence should help you recognize your abilities without convincing you that you are beyond correction. Spiritual development should encourage humility and compassion rather than give you permission to condemn everybody whose life looks different from yours.

You can be strong without being cruel. You can be confident without humiliating others. You can protect your boundaries without treating every new person as a threat. And you can recognize that somebody’s behavior is harmful without claiming to know every private thought inside their head. What matters most is what you can observe, how you respond, and whether your response reflects the values you claim to hold.

The strongest people are not always the loudest people in the room. Sometimes strength looks like refusing to participate in gossip. Sometimes it means walking away from a pointless argument. Sometimes it means admitting that you made a mistake and correcting it without making excuses. And sometimes it means continuing your work quietly while other people waste their time trying to provoke a reaction. You do not have to win every exchange to maintain your dignity.

DISCERNMENT: LEARNING TO SEE BEYOND APPEARANCES

As we get older and experience more of life, many of us begin to understand that appearances can be misleading. A person can speak beautifully and still behave selfishly. Somebody can present a respectable public image while treating people poorly in private. Another person may be quiet, awkward, or unfamiliar with our customs yet possess a kind heart and genuine intentions. If we judge everybody by first impressions alone, we can easily mistake presentation for character.

This is why discernment matters. Discernment is the ability to look beyond the surface, recognize patterns, consider evidence, and make thoughtful decisions about the people and situations we encounter. It develops through experience, reflection, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. It also requires patience because character is usually revealed through repeated behavior rather than one charming conversation or one impressive gesture.

Think about the wisdom an experienced elder may offer when observing a young person’s relationship. The elder may notice patterns that the younger person has overlooked because excitement has clouded their judgment. Perhaps the young person is so interested in being liked that they ignore repeated disrespect. Perhaps they confuse attention with affection or believe that promises are the same as actions. A person with more life experience may recognize warning signs that deserve a closer look.

Still, discernment is not the same as assuming that every feeling is proof. We can misread people. We can carry old disappointments into new relationships and interpret harmless behavior through the lens of past hurt. We can become so determined to avoid being deceived that we never allow anyone to get close enough to show us who they really are. Good judgment requires balance: pay attention to your instincts, but also examine observable behavior, ask questions, and give yourself time to reach a fair conclusion.

I have learned to value quiet reflection because constant noise can make it difficult to hear your own thoughts. When you spend every moment reacting to online arguments, other people’s opinions, and the endless stream of public drama, you leave little room for self-examination. Time alone can help you recognize your own habits, understand your priorities, and notice where you have allowed outside influences to distract you from what matters.

Whether you describe that process as spiritual growth, meditation, prayer, or simply taking time to think, the important thing is to create space for honest reflection. You need to understand your own motivations before you can judge the motivations of others fairly. You need to recognize your own weaknesses before you can expect to navigate the world with wisdom. And you need to remain open to learning because discernment is not a trophy you win once and carry forever. It’s an ongoing practice.

BOUNDARIES ARE NOT THE SAME AS HATRED

One of the most important lessons we can learn is that we are not required to maintain close relationships with everyone we encounter. You can wish somebody well without giving them unlimited access to your life. You can forgive a person without pretending that the behavior that hurt you never happened. You can recognize another person’s humanity while deciding that continued contact is not healthy or appropriate for you.

Many people struggle with boundaries because they have been taught to confuse kindness with endless availability. They believe that saying no makes them selfish, that stepping away from conflict makes them weak, or that every relationship must be preserved regardless of the damage it causes. But a healthy boundary is not necessarily a punishment. Sometimes it’s simply a decision about what you can reasonably accept and what you need to protect.

Consider how a disciplined boxer manages distance. A boxer does not need to remain within striking range of an opponent at every moment. The ability to control distance can reduce unnecessary exposure to danger and create opportunities to respond more wisely. In everyday life, the same basic principle can be useful. You do not have to remain in every argument, attend every gathering, answer every provocation, or explain every personal decision to people who have no genuine interest in understanding you.

There are practical ways to apply this principle without turning life into a battle. Keep sensitive information private until trust has been earned. Avoid sharing every personal plan with people who have not shown that they respect your confidence. If a conversation becomes abusive, end it when you safely can. If a relationship repeatedly involves manipulation or disrespect, consider what changes are needed to protect your well-being. When a situation involves credible threats or violence, prioritize safety and seek appropriate help rather than attempting to handle the danger alone.

Boundaries also require us to examine our own behavior. We cannot demand respect while refusing to show it. We cannot expect people to honor our privacy while constantly invading theirs. And we cannot claim to value peace if we spend our time provoking others and then complain when they react. Healthy boundaries are built on consistency, fairness, and a clear understanding that every person has responsibilities as well as rights.

I’ve reached a point in life where I value peace, creativity, and the ability to spend time with my own thoughts. I don’t need to be the center of every gathering or prove my worth through constant social activity. I can enjoy my own company, work on my projects, appreciate nature, and maintain relationships with people who have earned my trust. That kind of solitude is not necessarily loneliness. Sometimes it is the space you need to reconnect with yourself and remember what makes life meaningful.

STOP ALLOWING OTHER PEOPLE TO STEAL YOUR FOCUS

One of the most expensive mistakes we can make is allowing somebody else’s behavior to determine the direction of our lives. A careless comment can occupy our thoughts for hours. An online argument can ruin an otherwise peaceful afternoon. A person who thrives on conflict can pull us into a cycle of anger that continues long after the original encounter has ended. We may tell ourselves that we are defending our dignity, but sometimes we are simply giving our attention to something that does not deserve it.

Focus is a form of discipline. It requires you to know what matters to you and to recognize the difference between a meaningful responsibility and a distraction. You may have goals involving your health, family, creative work, finances, education, or spiritual development. Whatever those goals may be, you need to protect enough time and energy to pursue them. If you allow every passing controversy to interrupt your plans, you may spend years reacting to other people without making the progress you wanted for yourself.

I remember the discipline required to pursue bodybuilding when I was younger. Training demanded consistency, patience, and a willingness to keep working when the process became uncomfortable. You could not expect to build strength by thinking about exercise once in a while. You had to show up, perform the work, and continue even when the results were not immediately visible. The same principle applies to almost every meaningful goal in life. Progress usually comes from repeated effort rather than one dramatic moment of inspiration.

Mental discipline works in much the same way. If you want to develop a skill, set aside time to practice it. If you want to improve your relationships, pay attention to the way you communicate. If you want a more peaceful life, examine the habits that keep pulling you into unnecessary conflict. If you want to understand yourself better, create time to reflect honestly rather than constantly distracting yourself. Your future is shaped in part by the things you repeatedly choose to do.

Having a mission does not mean you must be productive every minute of the day. Rest matters. Recreation matters. Time with loved ones matters. Sometimes the most responsible decision is to step back, recover your energy, and allow your mind to settle. The goal is not to turn yourself into a machine. It’s to live intentionally rather than allowing every outside demand to decide what happens to your time.

You also need to recognize that progress may make some people uncomfortable, but their reactions cannot become your main concern. You are not responsible for making every person understand your choices. You are not required to shrink your ambitions so that nobody feels challenged by your effort. At the same time, you should remain humble enough to learn from honest criticism. Keep what helps you grow, discard what is merely destructive, and continue moving toward the life you want to build.

THE INNER VOICE WE MUST NOT IGNORE

When we are young, many of us learn the difference between right and wrong through ordinary experiences. We know when we have taken something that does not belong to us. We know when we have lied to avoid responsibility. We recognize the uncomfortable feeling that comes when we hurt somebody who trusted us. Parents, teachers, elders, and personal experience can help us understand those feelings and learn how to make better choices.

But conscience can become easier to ignore when we repeatedly choose what benefits us at another person’s expense. A person who lies to escape accountability may eventually become comfortable with dishonesty. Somebody who repeatedly humiliates others may stop considering the emotional damage caused by those actions. A person who treats compassion as weakness may begin to see cruelty as a reasonable way to get what they want. The more we practice a behavior, the easier it can become to repeat it without stopping to question ourselves.

That’s why self-examination matters. We should be willing to ask whether our words are truthful, whether our actions are fair, and whether we would accept the same treatment from somebody else. We should be able to admit when pride has taken over, when jealousy has influenced our judgment, or when anger has pushed us into behavior that does not reflect our values. Nobody becomes a better person by pretending they have nothing to correct.

Spiritual beliefs can provide a powerful framework for this kind of reflection. For many people, prayer, scripture, meditation, and a relationship with the divine offer guidance when life becomes confusing. For others, moral reflection begins through philosophy, family teachings, or a personal commitment to treating others with dignity. We may differ in how we understand the spiritual world, but we can still recognize the importance of honesty, restraint, compassion, and accountability.

I believe we need to be especially careful when we start using our beliefs to excuse the very behavior those beliefs should challenge. It’s easy to find words that support what we already want to do. It’s much harder to examine ourselves honestly and change when we discover that our choices are causing harm. A belief system should not become a shield that allows us to mistreat people while declaring ourselves righteous. The real test is not how convincingly we speak about goodness. It’s how consistently we practice it.

When conscience becomes something we silence rather than something we learn from, we risk losing an important guide for our decisions. We should never become so proud that we cannot apologize, so angry that we cannot reconsider, or so committed to winning that we no longer care about doing what is right. The ability to recognize our own wrongdoing is not a weakness. It’s one of the foundations of personal growth.

WHY SOLITUDE CAN HELP US FIND OURSELVES

There is a difference between being isolated by circumstances and choosing to spend time alone for a healthy purpose. Loneliness can be painful, especially when a person wants connection but struggles to find it. Yet solitude can also provide an opportunity to rest, think, create, and recover from the pressures of daily life. We should not assume that somebody who enjoys their own company is unhappy or that a person surrounded by people necessarily feels connected.

Some of my most valuable moments come when I can sit quietly, observe nature, work on my ideas, or simply allow my mind to settle. Living in Ghana has given me opportunities to appreciate the surrounding landscape and the changing rhythm of the day. Those moments remind me that life is bigger than the latest controversy, the newest online argument, or somebody else’s opinion about how I should live. The natural world continues its own work whether we are arguing on the internet or not.

Solitude can also help us notice how much of our behavior is driven by the need for approval. When we are constantly surrounded by other people’s opinions, we may begin measuring our worth through their reactions. We may choose clothes, relationships, careers, or personal goals based on what will impress an audience rather than what genuinely matters to us. Time alone gives us an opportunity to ask whether we are living according to our own considered values or simply performing a role for other people.

But solitude should not become a reason to abandon every meaningful relationship. Human beings need connection, and trusted friendships can provide encouragement, perspective, and support during difficult times. The answer is not to shut everybody out. It’s to develop a healthier relationship with ourselves so that we can choose our relationships with greater care. We should be able to enjoy companionship without becoming dependent on constant attention, and we should be able to enjoy solitude without turning it into a prison.

We also have to resist the temptation to treat every uncomfortable feeling as evidence that somebody else is working against us. Sometimes we need rest. Sometimes we need medical or emotional support. Sometimes we need an honest conversation with a trusted person who can help us see a situation more clearly. Protecting your peace includes knowing when to seek help, not simply learning how to keep everybody at a distance.

The most important question is whether your choices are helping you become more balanced, more thoughtful, and more capable of living according to your values. If time alone helps you develop those qualities, it can be a gift. If isolation leaves you increasingly fearful, distressed, or disconnected from everyone who cares about you, it’s worth reconsidering whether you need a different kind of support. Wisdom includes knowing the difference.

CLEANING UP THE INNER HOUSE

There is something deeply satisfying about cleaning a room that has become cluttered. You remove what no longer belongs there, put useful things in their proper places, and create space to move around without constantly stepping over obstacles. Once the work is finished, the room feels different. You can think more clearly, find what you need, and enjoy the space instead of feeling overwhelmed by it.

Our minds and relationships can become cluttered in much the same way. We accumulate old resentments, unexamined beliefs, unnecessary arguments, disappointments, and habits that no longer serve us. We may keep replaying a conversation that ended years ago or carry anger toward someone who has moved on with their life. We may allow gossip to occupy our attention or continue relationships that drain us simply because we are afraid of what others will think if we step away.

Cleaning up the inner house begins with honest questions. What am I holding on to that continues to hurt me? Which habits are preventing me from becoming the person I want to be? Where have I been dishonest with myself? Are there apologies I need to make, responsibilities I need to accept, or boundaries I need to establish? These questions are not always comfortable, but they can help us identify the areas of our lives that need attention.

We must also learn to leave situations with dignity whenever possible. If a friendship has ended, we do not need to destroy the other person’s reputation to justify moving forward. If a relationship is no longer healthy, we can establish distance without turning the separation into a public campaign. If we have made a mistake, we can acknowledge it, learn from it, and stop repeating it. We cannot control every outcome, but we can choose not to make a difficult situation worse through unnecessary cruelty.

The same principle applies to the way we use our words. Gossip can damage reputations, weaken trust, and create conflicts that continue long after the original conversation has ended. Before repeating something about another person, ask whether you know it’s true, whether sharing it is necessary, and whether you would be comfortable with the same information being spread about you. Sometimes the most responsible thing we can do is refuse to participate.

We should aim to leave people and places in better condition than we found them whenever we reasonably can. That does not mean accepting mistreatment or remaining in dangerous situations. It means taking responsibility for the impact of our own behavior. We can be firm without being vindictive, honest without being humiliating, and decisive without making cruelty our final message. The way we leave a situation says something about the character we are developing.

PROTECTING THE NEXT GENERATION

The tragedy that inspired this reflection brings us back to the responsibility we have toward young people. Children and teenagers are still learning how to manage frustration, understand differences, respond to rejection, and deal with the complicated emotions that come with growing up. They need guidance, consistent boundaries, and adults who are willing to take troubling behavior seriously before it develops into something more dangerous.

We should not confuse discipline with humiliation. Young people need to understand that their actions have consequences, but they also need opportunities to learn, correct their mistakes, and develop healthier ways to respond to conflict. When cruelty is treated as entertainment, bullying is dismissed as harmless teasing, or threats are ignored because adults assume children will eventually grow out of them, warning signs can be missed. Early intervention, responsible supervision, and meaningful conversations can make a difference.

Parents and caregivers cannot monitor every moment of a child’s life, but they can create an environment where difficult subjects are not automatically forbidden. Young people should feel able to talk about bullying, fear, peer pressure, online harassment, and the things they witness among their friends. They should understand that reporting a serious threat is not cowardice and that seeking help does not make them responsible for another person’s wrongdoing.

Schools and communities also need clear ways to respond when a young person reports being targeted. Complaints should be taken seriously, threats should be assessed responsibly, and appropriate action should follow when evidence supports it. Families should know how to seek assistance, and young people should not be left to manage credible threats on their own. Preventing violence requires more than telling children to be strong. It requires adults and institutions to take reasonable steps to protect them.

We must also teach young people that strength is not measured by how much fear they can create. Real strength includes self-control, courage, empathy, and the ability to walk away from a situation that does not need to become a fight. It includes recognizing that another person’s vulnerability is not an invitation to exploit them. And it includes understanding that a moment of anger can have consequences that last far beyond the moment itself.

No child should have to prove their worth by surviving cruelty. No family should have to beg others to recognize the seriousness of violence. And no community should become so accustomed to tragedy that it stops asking what could have been done differently. We cannot prevent every terrible event, but we can refuse to normalize the attitudes and behaviors that make people less safe.

A WORLD THAT NEEDS MORE HUMILITY

One of the things that concerns me about modern life is how easily people can become consumed by status. They want to appear wealthier, more desirable, more influential, more attractive, or more successful than the people around them. They may spend years trying to prove their worth through possessions, attention, and public approval, only to discover that none of those things can provide lasting peace by themselves.

There’s nothing wrong with working hard, enjoying material comforts, or taking pride in your accomplishments. The problem begins when your identity depends on having more than somebody else. If your happiness requires another person to be beneath you, then your happiness will always be vulnerable to comparison. Somebody will eventually earn more, achieve more, attract more attention, or possess something you do not have. The competition never ends because the standard keeps moving.

Humility does not require you to think poorly of yourself. It requires you to understand that your value does not depend on being superior to everybody else. You can recognize your strengths while acknowledging your weaknesses. You can celebrate your progress without belittling somebody who is still finding their way. You can appreciate what you have without becoming obsessed with what another person owns. Humility allows you to grow without making other people pay for your insecurities.

Life also becomes clearer when we remember how temporary our time here really is. We can spend decades chasing approval, collecting possessions, and fighting imaginary competitions, only to look back and realize that the moments we treasured most were often much simpler. A meaningful conversation, a peaceful morning, a shared meal, a creative accomplishment, or the knowledge that we helped someone through a difficult time can leave a deeper impression than many of the things we once thought we desperately needed.

When I look at the trees and mountains around me, I’m reminded that the world existed long before my arrival and will continue long after my time has passed. That perspective encourages me to think about what I am doing with the years I have been given. Am I using my time to develop something worthwhile? Am I treating people fairly? Am I learning from my mistakes? Am I contributing something that may help somebody else? Those questions matter far more than whether I can convince strangers that I am better than they are.

We should not wait until a personal tragedy forces us to reconsider our priorities. We can begin now by reducing unnecessary conflict, making time for people who genuinely care about us, and doing more of the things that bring meaning to our lives. We can stop feeding every argument that appears on our screens. We can stop measuring our success through somebody else’s approval. And we can start treating our limited time as something valuable rather than something to be wasted on endless resentment.

THE WORLD MAY BE CHANGING, BUT WE STILL HAVE CHOICES

There will always be things beyond our control. We cannot determine every decision made by other people, prevent every injustice, or eliminate every source of conflict. We cannot force an entire society to share our values, and we cannot guarantee that every person we meet will treat us fairly. Recognizing those limits can be frustrating, but it can also help us focus on the choices that remain within our reach.

We can decide what kind of behavior we reward with our attention. We can choose whether to spread an unverified claim or pause long enough to check it. We can refuse to join a crowd that is humiliating somebody for entertainment. We can challenge a harmful attitude when it’s safe and appropriate to do so. We can teach our children that respect is not weakness, that compassion does not erase accountability, and that disagreement does not automatically make somebody an enemy.

We can also become more careful about the people and influences we allow into our lives. That does not mean searching endlessly for hidden threats or assuming that every stranger has a secret agenda. It means building trust gradually, paying attention to consistent behavior, and recognizing when a relationship has become harmful. Healthy caution allows us to make thoughtful decisions without surrendering our ability to connect with good people.

For me, maintaining a sense of purpose is one of the best ways to resist the pull of constant negativity. I want to create, think, learn, share ideas, and continue exploring the questions that make human nature so fascinating. I want to spend my time on things that leave me feeling more grounded rather than more bitter. I want to recognize what is wrong in the world without allowing everything wrong in the world to take up permanent residence in my mind.

We should never confuse being informed with being consumed. It’s important to understand what is happening around us, but we also need to protect the space required to live our own lives. We can follow the news without watching it every waking hour. We can care about injustice without allowing rage to become our entire identity. We can speak about difficult subjects while still making room for laughter, gratitude, creativity, friendship, and rest.

The world may be changing in ways that trouble us, but we still have choices about the people we become within it. We can become more bitter or more thoughtful, more reactive or more disciplined, more suspicious of everybody or more discerning about whom we trust. We can contribute to the division, or we can refuse to make it worse. Those decisions may seem small when viewed against the scale of global problems, but they shape the atmosphere in our homes, our relationships, and our communities.

DO NOT LOSE YOUR HUMANITY

As I bring this reflection toward a close, I return to the young life that was lost and the family left to face a pain that words cannot fully explain. No discussion about culture, social media, jealousy, or spiritual values should ever make us lose sight of the human beings at the center of a tragedy. The loss of a child should move us to compassion, accountability, and serious reflection. We owe that family our respect, and we owe every young person a society that takes their safety and dignity seriously.

We also owe ourselves an honest examination of the world we are helping to create. Are we teaching children to value one another, or are we rewarding the behavior that tears people apart? Are we using technology to learn and build relationships, or are we allowing it to turn human suffering into entertainment? Are we developing our own character, or are we spending our lives trying to prove that somebody else is beneath us? These questions are uncomfortable, but avoiding them will not make the problems disappear.

I encourage you to protect your peace, establish healthy boundaries, and remain focused on what gives your life meaning. Do not waste your best years trying to win competitions that exist only in somebody else’s imagination. Do not allow another person’s insecurity to dictate your direction. And do not become so guarded against wrongdoing that you lose the ability to recognize genuine kindness when it appears. Be thoughtful about whom you trust, but leave room in your life for people who are honest, supportive, and willing to grow alongside you.

Most importantly, do not allow the darkness you see in the world to convince you that goodness no longer matters. There are still people who help strangers, protect children, care for their families, create beautiful things, and quietly make life better for those around them. There are still opportunities to learn, to heal, to build, and to become wiser than we were yesterday. We may not be able to repair everything that is broken, but we can refuse to become another source of unnecessary pain. We can choose honesty over deception, discipline over envy, compassion over cruelty, and thoughtful distance over destructive conflict.

Life is too precious to spend it feeding hatred and too short to waste it proving our worth to people who have no interest in understanding us. Take time to know yourself. Clean up the areas of your life that need attention. Pay attention to your conscience, respect the dignity of others, and keep working toward a purpose that gives your days meaning. Let us become more aware, more responsible, and more willing to protect the humanity that still exists within us. The world does not need more people competing to be the loudest or most feared. It needs more people who understand the value of a human life, the power of a kind heart, and the responsibility that comes with being here. Until we learn that lesson, the question will remain: what good is all our progress if we lose the very humanity that should make us human?
