WHEN TEMPTATION WALKS THROUGH THE CHURCH DOORS

An Original LanceScurv Illustration and Reflection on Spiritual Hypocrisy, Hidden Motives, Sexual Temptation, and the People Who Can Derail the Lives We Are Trying to Build

There is a particular kind of danger that people rarely discuss openly because it challenges one of the most deeply held assumptions in religious life: the belief that entering a house of worship automatically places us in the company of people who have our spiritual well-being at heart. We are taught to seek refuge in the church, to surround ourselves with believers, and to separate ourselves from the destructive influences of the outside world. Yet what happens when the very place we enter to escape temptation becomes another environment in which temptation finds us? What happens when the people who speak the language of salvation are still wrestling with their own appetites, ambitions, jealousies, and secret desires?

My illustration, Beware of the Seducing Spirits, was created approximately eighteen years ago, and its message remains relevant today. The drawing explores the possibility that temptation does not always arrive in an obvious or threatening form. Sometimes it arrives with a smile, an attractive appearance, a flattering compliment, or an offer that seems harmless enough to entertain. Sometimes it comes through a person who understands exactly what another person wants to hear. And sometimes the danger is not simply the temptation itself, but the hidden intention behind the person presenting it.

Throughout my life, living in New York City and later in Orlando, Florida, I witnessed and heard about enough religious controversies, personal scandals, and contradictions within church communities to make me question the comfortable picture many people hold of religious institutions. Some of these situations were reported in mainstream media, while others came through friendships, personal observations, and conversations with people familiar with what was happening inside particular congregations. Over time, I began to reflect on the distance that can exist between the public image of spiritual righteousness and the private behavior of the people who claim to represent it.

The issue I wanted to explore was not simply sexual temptation. It was the larger question of human vulnerability. Every person has weaknesses, and those weaknesses can take many forms. One person may struggle with lust, another with drugs or alcohol, another with gossip, greed, envy, or an insatiable need for attention. Some people are honestly fighting to overcome these habits. Others may have learned how to use the weaknesses of those around them for personal advantage. When these different motivations meet in an environment built on trust, the consequences can be devastating.

That is the uncomfortable conversation behind this illustration. A person can enter a church sincerely seeking transformation and still encounter someone whose influence pulls them in the opposite direction. A marriage can be threatened by a seemingly innocent friendship. A person’s recovery can be undermined by someone who encourages old habits. A life built around discipline and spiritual conviction can be shaken by an individual who recognizes a vulnerability and knows how to exploit it. My message is not to live in fear of everyone around you. It is to understand that good intentions must be accompanied by discernment, because appearances alone cannot tell you what another person truly wants.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SKETCH

When I created this illustration, I was working as a public transportation bus driver in Orlando, Florida. Driving a city bus might seem like an unusual occupation for someone to use as an opportunity to create artwork, but I learned how to make productive use of the small windows of time available to me.

I carried a durable folder containing my drawings and artistic materials. During certain layovers, particularly at major intersections where traffic signals required us to wait for a couple of minutes before making a turn, I would occasionally open that folder and sketch on the steering wheel. I was not sitting in a studio surrounded by expensive equipment or enjoying unlimited hours of uninterrupted creative time. I was finding moments wherever I could, preserving ideas before they disappeared from my mind.

Those brief intervals became opportunities to observe, reflect, and create. An idea might begin as a passing thought, a troubling observation, or a contradiction I had witnessed in society. I would work on it a little at a time, allowing the concept to develop until it became an illustration with a message of its own.

Beware of the Seducing Spirits emerged from years of thinking about the relationship between religious teachings and human behavior. The scandals and contradictions I had encountered did not cause me to focus exclusively on the failures of individual religious figures. They prompted me to consider a broader question: how can people who are warned about temptation remain vulnerable to the influence of others who understand exactly how to awaken it?

The drawing became my way of expressing that question visually. Even though my artistic abilities have continued to develop since then, I still believe the underlying concept deserves to be preserved. Art is not valuable only because of the technical skill displayed on the page. Sometimes its greatest value lies in the question it forces us to confront, even years after the artist first put pencil to paper.

THE CHURCH AS A PLACE OF HEALING — AND HUMAN WEAKNESS

One of the comparisons I have often made in my commentary is between a church and a hospital waiting room.

Think about it for a moment. People enter a hospital because something is wrong. They may be dealing with an illness, an injury, a chronic condition, or a problem they do not yet understand. They arrive hoping to receive treatment and leave in better condition than when they entered. Yet a hospital waiting room contains people dealing with different illnesses, different risks, and different circumstances. Being inside a place devoted to healing does not mean that every danger has suddenly disappeared.

The same principle can help us understand the complicated social environment of a church.

People walk through church doors carrying burdens that may not be visible to anyone else. Some are struggling with broken relationships. Some are trying to overcome addictions. Some are dealing with grief, loneliness, resentment, sexual frustration, financial hardship, or feelings of inadequacy. Others are sincerely trying to become more disciplined, compassionate, honest, and spiritually grounded.

They may all be sitting in the same congregation, listening to the same sermon, singing the same songs, and praying together. But they are not necessarily at the same stage of personal development, and they do not all approach their relationships with the same intentions.

Some are there to help. Some are there because they need help. Some may be searching for companionship or validation. And some may bring the same manipulative habits into the church that they display everywhere else.

The mistake is assuming that the setting itself guarantees the character of everyone inside it.

A church can provide meaningful fellowship, emotional support, moral instruction, and a sense of belonging. It can help people confront destructive behavior and develop healthier relationships. But those benefits do not eliminate the need for personal judgment. A religious environment is still made up of human beings, and human beings remain capable of selfishness, deception, jealousy, exploitation, and hypocrisy.

We must therefore distinguish between respecting the purpose of an institution and automatically trusting every individual associated with it.

A hospital can treat the sick without making every patient a physician. Likewise, a church can encourage spiritual growth without making every person in the congregation a trustworthy spiritual guide. The environment may offer the opportunity for healing, but the individual must still exercise discernment about the people they allow into their lives.

WHEN TEMPTATION WEARS A FAMILIAR FACE

In the illustration, two young women are presented within a provocative scene that connects sexual temptation with the manipulation of religious devotion. The words accompanying the drawing describe a sinister invitation to enter a church, seduce people, disrupt marriages, and encourage behavior that conflicts with their professed beliefs.

The exaggerated language is intentional. Satire often takes an uncomfortable idea and pushes it into an extreme form so the audience cannot easily ignore the contradiction being exposed.

The women in the drawing represent the temptation being offered, while the demonic figure represents the destructive intention behind that offer. The scene is not meant to suggest that women, attractive people, or sexually expressive individuals are inherently dangerous. Rather, it dramatizes the idea that a person can deliberately use attraction, attention, and emotional influence to manipulate someone else’s decisions.

Temptation itself is not limited to sexuality. Sexual attraction is a normal part of human life, and the presence of desire does not automatically make a person immoral. The problem emerges when desire is used as a weapon, when another person’s commitments are treated as obstacles to overcome, or when someone knowingly encourages destructive behavior for personal satisfaction.

A person who wants to undermine a relationship does not necessarily announce that intention. They may begin by offering sympathetic conversation, showing unusual interest in someone’s private problems, or positioning themselves as the only person who truly understands them. A friendship can gradually become emotionally intimate in ways that neither partner has openly acknowledged. Boundaries can become blurred, and decisions that once seemed unthinkable can begin to feel reasonable.

The same pattern can occur outside romantic relationships. Someone recovering from an addiction may encounter a companion who repeatedly encourages them to return to old habits. A person trying to escape a life of constant conflict may become involved with someone who thrives on drama. An individual working to rebuild financial stability may be drawn into reckless decisions by someone who promises excitement, status, or quick rewards.

In each case, the danger lies not merely in the temptation but in the direction it pulls a person.

The seducing spirit in my illustration can therefore be understood as a symbol of any influence that appeals to a person’s vulnerabilities while quietly steering them away from the values, responsibilities, and goals they claim to hold dear.

THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF SECRET MOTIVES

One of the most difficult lessons in life is that not everyone who approaches us wants the same outcome we want.

We often assume that because we are sincere, the people around us must also be sincere. If we are trying to save a marriage, we may assume that someone who listens to our relationship problems wants to help us repair it. If we are pursuing spiritual growth, we may assume that a person who shares our religious language has the same commitment to personal discipline. If we are trying to improve our lives, we may believe that those who spend time with us are interested in seeing us succeed.

Sometimes those assumptions are correct. Other times, they are not.

People can have conflicting interests even when they appear to share the same values. Someone may enjoy the trust and influence that comes with being viewed as a confidant. Another may want attention without caring about the consequences. Someone else may be driven by envy, competition, resentment, or the desire to prove that they can attract a person who is already committed elsewhere.

These motives are not always obvious, and it would be unreasonable to assume that every friendly interaction conceals an agenda. Suspicion can become destructive when it replaces evidence, communication, and sound judgment. But the opposite extreme—believing that nobody could possibly have an ulterior motive—is equally dangerous.

Discernment means observing patterns rather than inventing enemies.

Does someone repeatedly encourage you to violate your own boundaries? Do they urge you to hide conversations from your spouse? Do they ridicule the values you have told them are important to you? Do they seem to benefit when your relationships deteriorate? Do they encourage behavior that repeatedly leaves you emotionally, financially, or spiritually worse off?

One incident may not tell you everything. But repeated behavior deserves attention.

The point is not to become paranoid. It is to stop treating a person’s words as the only evidence of their character. Consistency, respect for boundaries, accountability, and the willingness to accept the word no can reveal far more than an impressive appearance or a persuasive conversation.

Someone who genuinely cares about you should not need to destroy your peace, undermine your commitments, or pressure you into choices that violate your conscience.

MARRIAGE, LUST, AND THE PRICE OF CARELESS BOUNDARIES

The sexual dimension of this illustration deserves particular attention because intimate relationships can be among the most vulnerable areas of human life.

Marriage does not eliminate attraction to other people. Nor does religious commitment automatically remove every desire that could threaten a relationship. What matters is how people respond to those feelings and whether they remain accountable for the choices they make.

An outside individual may attempt to exploit a troubled marriage, but the responsibility for maintaining marital boundaries ultimately belongs to the people who made the commitment. It is important not to place all the blame on a supposed seducer while ignoring the decisions of the person who chooses to betray their partner.

A relationship can be weakened by neglect, poor communication, unresolved resentment, dishonesty, or a lack of emotional intimacy. Those problems deserve to be addressed honestly. But they do not justify manipulation or betrayal. When someone is dissatisfied in a relationship, the responsible response is to communicate, seek appropriate help, establish boundaries, or make a clear decision about the future—not secretly cultivate an affair while pretending that everything remains intact.

This is where spiritual teaching can become meaningful or hypocritical, depending on how it is practiced.

If a congregation preaches fidelity but tolerates leaders who abuse their authority, it undermines its own message. If a religious community condemns sexual misconduct in public while protecting influential individuals from accountability in private, it creates an environment where appearances matter more than integrity.

At the same time, a healthy congregation should not turn every mistake into an excuse for humiliation or permanent rejection. People can fail, acknowledge wrongdoing, seek help, and change. Accountability and compassion are not opposites. Genuine spiritual growth requires both.

The real question is whether a community is willing to confront harmful behavior honestly, regardless of who is responsible, or whether it is more concerned with protecting its reputation.

WHEN THE PEOPLE PREACHING SALVATION NEED ACCOUNTABILITY

Religious scandals are especially troubling because spiritual leaders and institutions often occupy positions of extraordinary trust.

People may disclose private struggles to a pastor, minister, counselor, or fellow congregant that they would never discuss with a casual acquaintance. They may follow advice because they believe it comes from someone with spiritual wisdom. They may assume that a leader’s public devotion reflects private integrity.

When that trust is abused, the harm can extend beyond one relationship. Families can fracture. Congregations can become divided. Victims may struggle with shame or confusion. People who once found comfort in their faith may begin questioning the institution that was supposed to support them.

The damage becomes even greater when allegations of misconduct are dismissed without proper examination, when influential individuals receive special treatment, or when victims are pressured to remain silent to protect a church’s public image.

A title does not make a person immune to temptation. A pulpit does not automatically produce integrity. Familiarity with scripture does not guarantee that someone lives according to the principles they teach.

This is not an argument against religion or against the many people who sincerely serve their communities. It is an argument for taking the moral claims of religious institutions seriously enough to demand consistency.

If a church teaches honesty, its leaders should be willing to face honest questions. If it teaches accountability, accountability should apply to those in authority. If it teaches the protection of families, it should not ignore behavior that damages them simply because the person responsible is popular or influential.

A congregation that refuses to examine its own conduct risks becoming a place where wrongdoing is hidden behind religious language.

And that brings us back to the central contradiction in my drawing: a person can be surrounded by the language of salvation while still encountering behavior that pulls them toward destruction. The building does not make every interaction sacred. The title does not make every individual trustworthy. The message must be measured against the conduct of those who claim to represent it.

SEDUCING SPIRITS EXIST BEYOND THE CHURCH

Although the church provides the setting for this illustration, the underlying warning applies to everyday life.

The workplace can become an environment where people manipulate others for advancement. A neighborhood can contain individuals who exploit friendships to gain access to money, information, or influence. Online relationships can create opportunities for deception because people can present carefully edited versions of themselves. Even within families, affection and loyalty can sometimes be used to pressure people into decisions that serve someone else’s interests.

In my own commentary, I often refer to hidden agendas and covert motivations. By that, I mean the gap that can exist between what a person openly claims to want and what their repeated actions suggest they are pursuing.

We cannot read minds, and we should not pretend that we can. But we can pay attention to behavior.

If someone consistently appears when they need something but disappears when you need support, that pattern matters. If a person repeatedly encourages you to abandon your principles while presenting themselves as your friend, that deserves examination. If someone seems interested in your private affairs but shows little concern for your well-being, you may need to reconsider how much access you give them.

Healthy caution does not require hostility. You can be courteous without being intimate. You can forgive someone without restoring the same level of access to your life. You can wish someone well while deciding that a closer relationship is not wise.

Boundaries are not necessarily expressions of hatred. Sometimes they are simply the practical steps required to protect your peace, responsibilities, and personal development.

And perhaps one of the most important lessons is that we must examine ourselves with the same honesty we apply to others. It is easy to discuss manipulation while refusing to acknowledge the ways our own insecurities, appetites, and ambitions influence our choices. The most effective protection against destructive influence is not suspicion alone. It is self-awareness combined with sound judgment.

WHY THIS ILLUSTRATION STILL MATTERS

Nearly eighteen years have passed since I created Beware of the Seducing Spirits. The world has changed in countless ways, and my artistic abilities have continued to develop. Yet the question at the heart of the illustration has not disappeared: how do we recognize influences that appeal to our weaknesses while quietly pulling us away from the lives we are trying to build?

Today, temptation can arrive through a private message, a social media platform, an online friendship, a workplace relationship, or a familiar face in a trusted community. The methods may change, but the underlying human vulnerabilities remain recognizable.

People still want to feel desired. They still want validation. They still struggle with loneliness, resentment, insecurity, and the desire to escape difficult circumstances. And there will always be individuals who understand how to use those needs to gain attention, influence, or control.

That does not mean we should move through life believing that everyone is plotting against us. Such a mindset would rob us of meaningful friendships and the ability to trust people who genuinely care. Instead, we must learn to balance openness with discernment, compassion with boundaries, and faith with the willingness to examine reality honestly.

The purpose of preserving this illustration is not to claim that I have discovered every secret of human behavior. It is to preserve a question that I believe remains worth asking. What influences are we allowing into our lives? What are they encouraging us to become? And are we paying attention to the consequences of the choices we make in their presence?

Art can capture a moment in time, but a strong concept can continue speaking long after the original drawing is finished. This piece belongs to an earlier chapter of my artistic journey, yet its central theme still gives me something meaningful to discuss today.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN, BUT KEEP YOUR JUDGMENT CLEAR

The warning behind Beware of the Seducing Spirits is not that every church is dangerous, every attractive person is manipulative, or every friendship hides a secret agenda. Those conclusions would be unfair and would replace discernment with prejudice. The warning is that no setting, reputation, or outward appearance should exempt human behavior from thoughtful examination.

If you enter a church seeking spiritual growth, pursue that growth while paying attention to the character of the people with whom you associate. If you are building a marriage, protect its boundaries through honesty, communication, and mutual responsibility. If you are recovering from destructive habits, be mindful of relationships that repeatedly encourage you to return to them. If you are trying to live according to a particular set of values, recognize that those values must be defended through daily choices, not merely repeated in public.

Do not allow someone else’s confidence, charm, religious vocabulary, or apparent authority to silence your judgment. Ask questions when something does not seem right. Seek trustworthy advice when you are uncertain. Look at patterns rather than relying on promises alone. And remember that a person who respects you should also respect the boundaries you establish.

At the same time, remain humble enough to examine your own weaknesses. Nobody becomes invulnerable simply because they have recognized the weaknesses of others. We all have areas in which we can be deceived, tempted, or influenced. Self-awareness is not a sign of spiritual failure. It is one of the tools that can help us make wiser decisions.

I created this illustration many years ago while finding moments to draw between the responsibilities of driving a public transportation bus in Orlando. Today, I look back at that piece as part of a larger body of work documenting my observations about religion, culture, relationships, power, and human nature. My technique may have improved, but I still believe that preserving the idea is worthwhile.

The world does not need more people who blindly condemn everyone around them. It needs people who can think critically, recognize contradictions, hold themselves accountable, and distinguish genuine care from behavior that repeatedly causes harm. We can maintain our faith without abandoning our judgment. We can remain compassionate without becoming careless. And we can welcome people into our lives without surrendering responsibility for the direction those relationships take us.

Be aware of the seducing spirits—not merely as a religious phrase, but as a reminder to examine the influences surrounding your life. Whether the danger appears in a church, a workplace, a neighborhood, a friendship, or a private relationship, pay attention to what it encourages you to do and what it ultimately asks you to sacrifice.

Because sometimes the greatest threat to the life you are trying to build is not an obvious enemy standing in front of you. It is an influence you have welcomed close enough to affect your judgment before you fully understand its intentions.

And that is why, even after all these years, I believe this illustration deserves to be seen, discussed, and preserved.

BEWARE OF THE SEDUCING SPIRITS
