Circadian Rhythms: A Silent Attack on Black People
The Clock Inside Us
Every person is born with an internal clock. It tells the body when to wake up, when to sleep, when to eat, and when to rest. This is called the circadian rhythm. It follows the rise and fall of the sun. It is how our ancestors lived for thousands of years, and it is still part of us today.
But the world we live in now fights against this natural rhythm. This attack affects all people, but it hits Black people the hardest.
We Are People of the Sun
As melanated people, we are deeply connected to the sun. Our skin, our energy, and our spiritual balance all respond to sunlight. This connection helps our bodies work the right way. It helps us produce melatonin when the sun sets, so we can sleep and heal. It helps us produce energy and stay focused during the day.
But when we are cut off from the natural rhythm of the sun, our bodies and minds suffer. And this is not by accident. It is part of a larger system that works to keep us broken.
A System That Keeps Us Tired
Many Black people work jobs that require night shifts or long hours. We are often stuck in low-paying work that doesn’t allow us to rest properly. We stay up late. We wake up early. We sleep during the day with light pouring in through thin curtains. This is not good for our health.
This is not just bad luck. It is a system designed to keep us off balance. When your circadian rhythm is broken, you are more likely to suffer from:
High blood pressure
Depression
Weight gain
Trouble focusing
Anger and frustration
A weakened immune system
You are also less likely to feel spiritually centered, peaceful, or connected to your purpose.
Disruption as a Weapon
In Black neighborhoods, there is often more noise at night. Sirens. Arguments. Music. Traffic. Stress is everywhere. These things keep us from falling into deep, healing sleep.
Our food is often full of chemicals and sugars that disrupt our body’s balance. Our entertainment is loud and chaotic. We are pulled into a cycle of watching screens late at night, scrolling through social media, and feeding the mind with negative energy.
All of this breaks our natural rhythm. It keeps us disconnected from the very thing that makes us strong—our connection to nature, rest, sunlight, and peace.
Melatonin: The Silent Shield
Melatonin is a natural hormone. It helps us fall asleep and stay asleep. It also helps the body fight off sickness. But when we stare at phones, TVs, and LED lights late at night, our brain thinks it’s still daytime. It stops making melatonin.
This means we are not getting the deep sleep we need. And when we don’t sleep deeply, our bodies don’t repair. Our minds don’t rest. We wake up angry, confused, tired, and drained. Over time, this becomes normal. But it should never be normal.
This is one of the most dangerous parts of the system. They don’t need to fight us in the streets. They just need to keep us tired.
Spiritual Disconnection
When our rhythm is broken, we lose more than sleep. We lose our connection to the spiritual world. Our ancestors followed the sun, the moon, and the stars. They prayed and meditated during sacred hours. They understood the power of silence and rest. But in this modern world, filled with artificial light and noise, that connection is lost.
Many of us don’t realize that the confusion, fear, and fighting in our communities are often linked to broken sleep patterns, bad food, and lack of peace. This is spiritual warfare disguised as everyday life.
A Message to Our People
We cannot control everything. But we can begin to protect ourselves by returning to what is natural.
Go to bed at the same time every night, even if you don’t fall asleep right away.
Keep your room dark and quiet.
Turn off screens at least one hour before bed.
Get sunlight during the day, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Eat simple, clean foods that nourish the body.
Teach your children the power of rest and peace.
This is not just self-care. This is protection. This is resistance. This is how we fight back in a silent war meant to weaken us without us even knowing.
Closing Thought
Circadian rhythms are not just science—they are part of who we are. As Black people, we must remember our connection to the sun, to nature, and to rest. These things were given to us for free, but the world around us is doing everything it can to steal them away.
It is time to wake up—not just from sleep, but from the system that wants us disconnected. Heal your rhythm, and you will begin to heal your life.
