There are moments when a truth becomes so obvious that you have to wonder why we keep running in circles trying to figure it out. We talk about racism, discrimination, inequality, poverty, injustice, and the many problems affecting Black people across America, Africa, the Caribbean, and the global African diaspora. We hold meetings, attend rallies, argue over politics, and debate the same issues our grandparents and great-grandparents struggled with. Yet, after all these years, one of the most important solutions remains right in front of our faces. Unity. That’s right, unity! But if the answer is so simple, why have we made it so difficult to put into practice?

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this question, and the more I examine our situation, the more I realize that our struggle isn’t only about what other people have done to us. We also have to examine what we’ve been taught to believe about ourselves, how we see one another, and what we consider success. We have to look beyond the surface of our political arguments and social disagreements and examine the psychological damage that can remain long after the laws have changed. Because a people can win certain rights and still carry beliefs that prevent them from recognizing their own power.

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a moment. We often talk about unity as though it means standing beside somebody at a rally, attending the same cookout, wearing the same colors, or celebrating together when something good happens. But that’s not enough. You can stand next to somebody and still resent them. You can smile in somebody’s face while secretly competing against them. You can claim to love your community while refusing to support the businesses, institutions, and people who are trying to strengthen it. Real unity requires more than a shared appearance. It requires a shared purpose, mutual responsibility, and the understanding that our individual futures are connected to the future of our communities.

And here’s where the conversation gets uncomfortable. What if part of our problem is that we’ve spent so much time trying to prove that we deserve a place in somebody else’s world that we’ve neglected the responsibility of strengthening our own? What if we’ve confused equal rights with social acceptance, justice with affection, and freedom with the approval of people who may never fully understand our experiences? Those are serious questions, and they deserve serious answers. I’m not talking about hating anybody or refusing to cooperate with people from different backgrounds. I’m talking about knowing the difference between standing up for your rights and spending your life trying to convince somebody else that you’re worthy.

Because I believe we’ve reached a point where we have to look at ourselves honestly, recognize the damage that has been done, and decide what we’re going to do with the time and opportunities we have left. We cannot change every person, erase every injustice, or control every institution around us. But we can change how we organize, how we invest, how we educate our children, how we treat one another, and how we prepare the next generation. The question isn’t whether we have the potential to build something better. The question is whether we’re finally ready to stop waiting for permission and start doing the work together.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EQUALITY AND ACCEPTANCE

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is treating equality and acceptance as though they’re the same thing. They aren’t. Equality means having the same legal protections, opportunities, and rights as other people. It means being able to obtain financing, own property, establish businesses, receive a fair education, participate in government, and determine the direction of your own life without discrimination. It means having a fair opportunity to compete, build, contribute, and prosper. None of those things should depend on whether somebody likes your skin color, approves of your culture, or wants to invite you into their personal circle.

Acceptance, however, can mean something entirely different when we begin to measure our value by how much another person welcomes us. There’s nothing wrong with wanting friendship, respect, cooperation, or healthy relationships across racial and cultural lines. We’re human beings, and we naturally want to connect with others. But there’s a difference between enjoying mutual respect and making another person’s approval the foundation of your identity. When you need somebody else to validate your existence before you can feel good about yourself, you’ve handed them far too much control over your emotional life.

Think about how much energy we can waste trying to impress people who have no intention of recognizing our worth. We purchase things to display our status. We chase expensive lifestyles to prove we’ve made it. We measure our progress by the neighborhoods we enter, the people who acknowledge us, the social circles that welcome us, and the doors that finally open. Meanwhile, we may neglect our savings, our businesses, our families, our communities, and the institutions that could give future generations a stronger foundation. We can become so focused on looking successful that we forget to build something that will survive us.

And that’s a dangerous trade. A person can wear expensive clothes, drive a luxury vehicle, and live in an impressive home while having very little influence over the economic conditions affecting their community. Individual achievement matters, but individual achievement alone cannot solve every collective problem. We need people who succeed personally, but we also need people who understand the importance of creating opportunities for others. We need ownership, investment, education, mentorship, and institutions that can continue serving the community long after today’s successful individuals have moved on.

You can demand equality without begging for affection. You can cooperate with people without surrendering your identity. And you can succeed in a society without making its approval the final measure of your worth. That’s the distinction we have to understand if we want to build a healthier future.

WHY UNITY MEANS MORE THAN STANDING TOGETHER

If we genuinely want to understand unity, we have to stop treating it as a temporary emotion and start treating it as a long-term commitment. Unity doesn’t mean everybody has to think alike, vote alike, worship alike, or live the same way. A healthy community will always contain disagreements. People have different personalities, interests, experiences, and priorities. The goal isn’t to erase those differences. The goal is to develop enough common ground to work together on the issues that affect us all.

We should be able to disagree about politics without destroying every relationship. We should be able to debate religion without treating one another as enemies. We should be able to discuss cultural differences without turning those differences into reasons for humiliation. We should be able to recognize that a person from one African country may have different customs, features, languages, and experiences from someone whose family comes from another part of Africa or the Caribbean. None of those differences automatically makes one person more African, more Black, or more deserving of respect than another.

The problem begins when differences become weapons. Instead of asking how we can cooperate, we start looking for reasons to separate. Instead of recognizing our shared interests, we focus on who has the better hair, lighter or darker skin, more money, greater social status, or the more impressive family background. We can turn nearly anything into a competition, even when the competition weakens the very people participating in it. And when we do that, we make it much harder to build the trust necessary for lasting cooperation.

Real unity requires discipline. It means supporting a community business when the service is good, giving honest feedback when improvements are needed, and understanding that constructive criticism doesn’t have to become personal warfare. It means developing organizations that can survive disagreements, maintaining transparent leadership, establishing clear goals, and holding people accountable for their responsibilities. It means showing up after the cameras leave, after the rally ends, and after the emotional excitement fades. That’s when we find out whether our commitment is genuine.

A divided community often leaves each family to fight its own battles alone. A united community has a better chance of pooling resources, protecting vulnerable residents, developing new businesses, supporting education, and responding to challenges that would overwhelm individuals acting separately. Unity doesn’t guarantee success, and it doesn’t eliminate outside obstacles. But it gives people a stronger foundation from which to confront those obstacles together.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL COST OF ALWAYS SEEKING APPROVAL

Now let’s go deeper, because the issue isn’t only economic or political. There’s a psychological dimension to this conversation that we cannot afford to ignore. When generations of people are repeatedly told that their appearance, culture, language, history, and natural features are inferior, those messages can influence how they see themselves. The damage doesn’t always arrive through a direct insult. Sometimes it comes through entertainment, advertising, school lessons, religious imagery, family conversations, and the everyday standards society uses to decide who looks intelligent, beautiful, respectable, or successful.

Imagine growing up in an environment where the people who look like you are rarely presented as the standard of beauty or authority. Imagine hearing negative comments about your nose, lips, hair texture, or skin tone before you’ve even had the opportunity to develop a healthy understanding of your identity. Imagine being taught that certain features are signs of superiority while your own features are treated as flaws that must be corrected. Those messages can become deeply embedded in a child’s mind, especially when they come from people the child trusts.

And sometimes the damage is repeated inside our own homes and communities. A child with darker skin may be insulted for being too dark. Another child may be praised for having lighter skin or hair that resembles a European standard of beauty. A young person may grow up believing that their natural appearance makes them less attractive, less desirable, or less likely to succeed. These attitudes can be passed from one generation to another without anyone stopping to question where they came from or what they are doing to the people who absorb them.

We need to recognize that internalized prejudice can become a problem even when the original system that promoted those ideas is no longer openly operating in the same way. A person may legally have the freedom to choose their future while still feeling ashamed of their identity. A community may gain political independence while continuing to measure success according to standards inherited from colonial rule. A society may outlaw certain forms of discrimination while the emotional consequences of earlier generations continue to influence relationships, institutions, and personal decisions.

That’s why freedom cannot be measured by laws alone. Laws matter. Access to resources matters. Political power matters. But our understanding of ourselves matters too. If a child grows up believing that their identity is something to overcome, what kind of foundation are we giving that child? If a young person believes that success means escaping their own community rather than helping improve it, what happens to the people who remain? And if we continue teaching our children to seek approval from others before they can recognize their own value, how can we expect them to develop lasting confidence?

We have to challenge those messages wherever they appear, including when they come from our own mouths. We cannot complain about outside prejudice while repeating the same harmful judgments among ourselves. We cannot demand dignity from the world while teaching our children to feel ashamed of the features and histories they inherited. Healing begins when we become willing to examine what we’ve accepted as normal and decide whether those beliefs deserve to continue into another generation.

YOU CANNOT LEGISLATE LOVE

Here’s a truth that may be difficult for some people to accept: you can fight for justice, but you cannot force genuine affection. You can demand that institutions obey the law. You can challenge discriminatory practices. You can organize politically, pursue legal remedies, and work to expand access to opportunities. You can insist that people treat you fairly in public life. But you cannot pass a law that requires another person to admire you, understand you, or genuinely love you.

That doesn’t mean prejudice should be excused or that people should accept disrespect. It means we have to understand the limits of what we can control. Other people are responsible for their own beliefs and behavior, and we are responsible for how we respond to them. We should challenge unfair treatment wherever it occurs, but we should not build our entire sense of self around waiting for someone else to change their mind about us.

Think about the emotional exhaustion that comes from constantly trying to prove yourself. You work harder because you want to silence somebody’s doubts. You purchase more because you want to demonstrate that you’ve achieved a certain level of success. You change the way you speak, dress, or behave because you’re afraid that your natural self won’t be accepted. You may even distance yourself from people who share your background because you believe their presence threatens the image you’ve worked so hard to create.

But what happens when the approval never comes? What happens when you reach the neighborhood, obtain the position, buy the house, or enter the social circle, only to discover that some people still don’t see you the way you hoped they would? What happens when the prize you’ve spent years chasing turns out to be somebody else’s opinion, an opinion you may never be able to control? You can lose a lifetime trying to win a contest whose rules are constantly changing.

Your worth cannot depend on whether every person you encounter recognizes it. You were a human being before anybody approved of you, and your dignity doesn’t disappear when somebody refuses to acknowledge it. You don’t need to hate anyone to understand this. You don’t need to withdraw from society or reject healthy relationships across cultural lines. You simply need to stop confusing the desire to be respected with the need to be emotionally validated by everybody around you.

The same principle applies to communities. We can welcome cooperation without making outside approval our primary goal. We can build friendships across racial lines while remaining confident in our own cultural identity. We can participate in the wider world without abandoning the responsibility to strengthen the communities that helped shape us. The objective isn’t isolation. The objective is independence of thought, confidence of identity, and the freedom to cooperate without feeling that we must become somebody else to deserve a place in the world.

OUR DIFFERENCES DO NOT CANCEL OUR SHARED HISTORY

When we talk about African identity, we have to recognize the enormous diversity of African peoples and their descendants. Africa isn’t one culture, one language, one appearance, or one set of traditions. The continent contains many nations, ethnic groups, languages, belief systems, and historical experiences. The African diaspora is equally diverse, shaped by different migrations, colonial systems, forms of enslavement, struggles for independence, and experiences of life in different societies.

There is no single way to look African. There is no single way to be Black. A person from Ethiopia may have a different appearance and cultural background from someone from Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Brazil, or the United States. Those differences are part of the richness of our history, not evidence that one person belongs more than another. We should be able to explore our ancestry, preserve our traditions, and celebrate our local identities without turning those differences into a reason to disrespect one another.

At the same time, recognizing diversity doesn’t require us to ignore the historical forces that connected many African-descended communities. The transatlantic slave trade, European colonial expansion, racial discrimination, and the extraction of labor and resources affected millions of people and helped shape societies across multiple continents. The details varied from place to place, but the consequences included disrupted families, cultural suppression, economic exploitation, and lasting struggles over identity and opportunity.

History must be examined carefully, not reduced to slogans or turned into a competition over who suffered the most. Different communities have experienced distinct forms of persecution, displacement, and state violence. Those experiences deserve to be understood in their own context. Recognizing one community’s suffering doesn’t require us to dismiss another’s, and studying the differences between historical events can help us understand the particular challenges each community faces.

But we must also recognize that shared history alone doesn’t automatically produce unity. People can experience related forms of injustice and still distrust one another. They can share ancestry while fighting over national identity, skin tone, language, religion, or social status. Unity requires us to move beyond the assumption that a common background will somehow make cooperation happen on its own. We have to build the relationships, institutions, and habits that turn shared interests into shared action.

Imagine what becomes possible when people across the diaspora learn from one another instead of constantly competing for recognition. Imagine stronger educational exchanges, meaningful business partnerships, cultural programs, and relationships built on mutual respect. Imagine communities sharing useful knowledge about entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, housing, and education. We don’t have to erase our differences to create those possibilities. We have to become mature enough to work together while respecting them.

BUILDING ECONOMIC POWER INSTEAD OF PERFORMING SUCCESS

Let’s bring this conversation down to the practical level, because unity without action becomes another attractive word that we repeat without changing anything. If we want stronger communities, we need to talk about ownership, capital, employment, education, property, and the institutions that help people build stable lives. We have to ask where our money goes, what our spending supports, and whether our financial decisions are helping create opportunities that can benefit the next generation.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the rewards of hard work. People deserve to enjoy their homes, clothing, transportation, travel, and the other things they earn through their labor. The problem arises when consumption becomes more important than construction. We can spend years displaying the appearance of wealth without developing the assets, skills, businesses, and institutions that create lasting economic security. Looking prosperous and building prosperity aren’t always the same thing.

We need to encourage entrepreneurship, support responsible local businesses, teach financial literacy, develop professional networks, and create opportunities for people to invest in projects that have a realistic chance of succeeding. We need to help young people understand the difference between earning income and building assets. We need to encourage families to discuss money, education, business ownership, and long-term planning instead of treating those subjects as secrets that should never be discussed outside the home.

We also have to be realistic about the obstacles. Access to capital isn’t equal. Lending discrimination, housing policies, unequal educational opportunities, and historical barriers to ownership have affected what many people have been able to accomplish. We cannot pretend that every community begins with the same resources or that determination alone can erase structural disadvantages. Building economic power requires both individual effort and a serious understanding of the conditions that shape opportunity.

But recognizing those barriers should strengthen our determination to organize, not convince us that action is pointless. If one business struggles, we should examine why and learn from the experience. If a neighborhood loses jobs, we should investigate what resources and partnerships might help create new opportunities. If young people lack access to useful training, we should explore ways to connect them with education, mentors, and practical skills. We need sustained efforts, honest leadership, and plans that can survive beyond a single meeting or public announcement.

We should also stop assuming that every person who succeeds has a responsibility to solve every problem alone. Wealthy individuals can contribute, but lasting community strength requires broad participation. Teachers, tradespeople, entrepreneurs, parents, students, retirees, professionals, and young adults all have something valuable to offer. Money matters, but so do knowledge, time, mentorship, organization, and the willingness to help others develop their abilities. A community becomes stronger when more of its members have meaningful ways to contribute.

ORGANIZATION IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANGER AND PROGRESS

We can become extremely passionate when an injustice occurs. We gather, speak out, march, post messages, and demand answers. Those responses can be important, especially when people are trying to draw attention to a serious problem. But what happens after the attention fades? What happens when the news moves on and the public begins discussing something else? If nothing continues after the emotional moment, we may have expressed our anger without building the structure needed to produce lasting change.

Organization is more than gathering people in one place. It means identifying a problem, setting clear goals, assigning responsibilities, developing a realistic plan, measuring progress, and remaining committed long enough to learn from setbacks. It means having leadership that can be questioned, finances that can be examined, and decisions that are made with the community’s interests in mind. It means building systems that don’t collapse simply because one person leaves, one argument breaks out, or one public figure loses attention.

We need organizations that can help families understand their rights, connect entrepreneurs with useful resources, support educational programs, preserve cultural history, and develop practical responses to local problems. We need community groups that welcome capable people without requiring them to agree on every political or personal issue. We need leaders who understand that trust is earned through consistent action, not merely through speeches about unity.

And we need to become better at working with people who aren’t exactly like us. Every disagreement cannot become a reason to walk away. Every mistake cannot automatically be treated as proof that a person is worthless. At the same time, unity cannot become an excuse for corruption, abuse, or blind loyalty. Healthy cooperation requires standards, transparency, accountability, and the courage to correct problems before they destroy the organization.

The real test of unity is whether we can remain committed to a worthwhile purpose when things become inconvenient. It’s easy to support an idea when everybody agrees and success seems close. It’s harder when progress is slow, resources are limited, personalities clash, and sacrifices must be made. But that’s when the foundation is built. A community doesn’t become powerful simply because its members share a history. It becomes stronger when they learn how to turn their shared interests into organized, responsible action.

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN WHO THEY ARE

One of our most important responsibilities is helping the next generation develop a healthy understanding of their identity. Children need to learn their history, but they also need to learn how to think critically about the information they receive. They should understand the achievements, struggles, creativity, and contributions of African and African-descended peoples without being taught that pride in their heritage requires hatred of anyone else’s.

We need to teach children that their natural features are not defects, that their ancestry is not a source of shame, and that their future isn’t limited by the assumptions other people make about them. We need to expose them to examples of excellence in science, medicine, business, literature, art, engineering, education, and public service. We need to help them recognize that intelligence and ability can appear in many forms, and that their potential deserves to be developed rather than dismissed.

We must also be honest about the history of racism, enslavement, colonialism, and discrimination. Protecting children doesn’t mean hiding painful truths from them. It means presenting those truths in ways that help them understand what happened, why it mattered, and what lessons can be learned. History should give children context, not convince them that they have no control over their future. They should understand the obstacles their ancestors faced while also recognizing the creativity, courage, and determination that helped people survive and build under difficult conditions.

Parents and communities also have to examine the messages children receive inside their own homes. We cannot tell young people to love themselves while insulting their appearance. We cannot teach confidence while constantly comparing siblings, cousins, and classmates. We cannot demand respect for our culture while making people feel inferior because they speak differently, come from another country, or have a different shade of skin. Our behavior often teaches more powerfully than our speeches.

A child who grows up with a healthy sense of identity is better equipped to enter the wider world without feeling that every rejection is a judgment on their worth. That child can learn from others, form friendships across cultural lines, and pursue opportunities without feeling compelled to abandon their roots. That’s the kind of confidence we should be building: a confidence that welcomes knowledge, respects others, and doesn’t need to put anybody down to stand tall.

STOP WAITING FOR PERMISSION TO BUILD OUR FUTURE

At some point, we have to accept that there are limits to what we can demand from the outside world. We can demand equal protection under the law. We can challenge discrimination, seek accountability, and fight for policies that expand opportunity. We can insist that institutions fulfill their obligations and that people be judged fairly. Those struggles remain important, and we should never confuse self-determination with surrendering our rights.

But we cannot wait for every institution to become fair before we begin strengthening our families and communities. We cannot wait for every person to respect our history before we preserve it ourselves. We cannot wait for every business to invest in our neighborhoods before we explore responsible ways to develop local enterprises. And we cannot wait for somebody else to tell our children that they’re valuable before we teach them to recognize their own worth.

This doesn’t mean that every challenge can be solved overnight or that community projects will succeed simply because people have good intentions. Resources are limited, circumstances differ, and some problems require changes in public policy. We need realistic plans, capable leadership, reliable information, and the patience to build something that lasts. But waiting for perfect conditions can become an excuse for never beginning. We have to start with the resources, knowledge, relationships, and opportunities available to us now.

We also have to recognize that self-determination isn’t the same as isolation. We can build strong communities while participating fully in the wider society. We can cooperate with people from different backgrounds, learn from their experiences, and develop relationships based on shared interests. We can demand justice while refusing to make resentment the center of our identity. The point is to stop making our future dependent on whether other people approve of us and start taking greater responsibility for the things we can influence.

The question we should be asking isn’t simply why other people haven’t given us what we deserve. We should also be asking what we’re building, what we’re preserving, what we’re teaching, and how we’re preparing for the future. Those questions don’t erase historical responsibility. They help us move from recognizing a problem to developing a response. We can understand what happened to our ancestors without allowing that history to become the only story we tell about ourselves.

THE TIME FOR UNITY IS NOW

When I come back to the beginning of this conversation, I keep returning to the same answer. Unity. Not unity as a slogan, not unity as a performance, and not unity as a temporary feeling that disappears the moment somebody disagrees with us. I’m talking about unity as a commitment to shared interests, mutual respect, collective responsibility, and the patient work of building institutions that can serve generations to come.

We have to stop confusing differences with enemies. We have to stop treating another person’s success as a threat to our own. We have to challenge the colorism, cultural prejudice, and destructive competition that weaken our relationships. We have to learn how to disagree without turning every disagreement into a permanent division. And we have to recognize that a community becomes stronger when its members have the confidence to contribute their abilities rather than spend their lives fighting over who deserves the most recognition.

We also have to free ourselves from the idea that somebody else’s approval is the final proof of our value. We can demand fairness without begging to be loved. We can pursue opportunity without abandoning our identity. We can build friendships and partnerships across racial lines without making acceptance the purpose of our existence. Our worth doesn’t begin when somebody recognizes it, and our potential doesn’t disappear when somebody refuses to acknowledge it.

The responsibility now is to turn these ideas into action. Invest where it makes sense. Support education. Preserve our history. Develop businesses. Mentor young people. Strengthen families. Build organizations that operate with honesty and purpose. Challenge discrimination when we encounter it, and challenge destructive behavior within our own communities as well. None of these actions requires us to become perfect. They require us to become more intentional about what we want the future to look like and what we’re willing to do to help create it.

And here’s what I want you to take away from this conversation: we cannot control every person, every institution, or every decision that affects our lives. But we can choose whether we continue to treat one another as competitors in a struggle for outside approval or begin working together toward something greater. We can continue waiting for an invitation to somebody else’s table, or we can build stronger foundations of our own while demanding the equal rights and opportunities that belong to us. We can pass down the wounds of the past without examining them, or we can study our history, heal where we can, and prepare our children to move forward with greater confidence. The choice is ours to make, and the work begins with what we do next.

LanceScurv out. On to the next one. Let me know what you think, because this conversation shouldn’t end when you finish reading or listening. Take these ideas into your homes, your businesses, your organizations, and your communities. Think deeply about what unity requires from each of us, and then look for practical ways to put it into action. I wish you nothing less than peace, balance, healing, and righteous revolution always. Peace.
