WHEN THE PAST COMES BACK INTO THE PRESENT

Sometimes a story you thought had disappeared comes back into your life when you least expect it. A recording you made years ago, a subject you once investigated, and a video you thought was lost can suddenly become relevant again when somebody reminds you of what you said before. That’s exactly the situation I’m dealing with right now, as I prepare to revisit my earlier coverage of Pastor James David Manning of ATLAH World Missionary Church in Harlem, New York.

Approximately ten years ago, I covered this subject and presented material that I believed the public needed to hear. That original video eventually disappeared from YouTube after my channel was taken down. For a long time, I couldn’t locate the material, and like many older pieces of content that disappear from the internet, it seemed as though that chapter of my work had been closed. But sometimes information has a way of resurfacing when people least expect it.

Recently, I published another video discussing a woman’s account involving Pastor Manning. In the comments section, someone reminded me that I had covered this subject years earlier and had presented material that many people might never have heard. That comment sent me searching for the old recording again, and I eventually located a copy of the material through Amazon. I was then able to recover the audio and begin preparing it for another presentation.

For me, this isn’t simply about uploading an old recording because it might attract attention. It’s about preserving commentary, revisiting information that deserves careful examination, and giving people an opportunity to hear material that may have disappeared from their usual sources. When a subject returns to public attention, I believe it’s reasonable to look back at what was reported before, examine the available evidence, and ask whether the questions raised at the time have been adequately addressed.

My purpose here isn’t to pretend that every allegation is a proven fact, nor is it to ask anybody to accept my personal opinion without thinking for themselves. My purpose is to put the documented history into context, explain why this recording matters to my own body of work, and examine the larger issue of trust, authority, and accountability when religious leaders interact with the people who look to them for spiritual guidance. The public deserves information, but it also deserves a clear distinction between evidence, allegations, and conclusions.

THE MAN BEHIND THE PULPIT

Pastor James David Manning was born on February 20, 1947, in Red Springs, North Carolina. He eventually made his way to New York City and became the pastor of ATLAH World Missionary Church in Harlem. His church has been known for its strong public presence, his confrontational preaching style, and statements that have generated controversy far beyond his congregation. According to Manning’s own church biography, he became pastor of the congregation in 1981. His early life also included a period of criminal activity and incarceration before he turned toward Christianity. These details form part of his documented background, rather than something that needs to be exaggerated or embellished to make a point.

Manning has spoken publicly about his criminal past, including burglaries and the prison time that followed. His church biography describes his transformation into a committed Christian while incarcerated, presenting that experience as a turning point in his life. That history raises an important question about the meaning of personal transformation. People can change, and a difficult past doesn’t automatically disqualify somebody from serving others. But a claim of spiritual transformation also doesn’t place anyone beyond criticism. A person’s present conduct must be evaluated on its own merits, regardless of what happened decades earlier.

Over the years, Manning has become widely known for his inflammatory public statements, especially those directed at LGBTQ people and political figures. His rhetoric has included language that many people have viewed as hateful, demeaning, or threatening. His statements about gay people and his claims involving Starbucks have been reported by multiple media outlets. These aren’t merely rumors about what somebody might have said behind closed doors; his public rhetoric has been a documented part of his public image. His own words provide a basis for examining the relationship between religious authority, public responsibility, and the treatment of people with whom a leader disagrees. https://www.atlah.org/pastor-james-david-manning-bio/ and https://www.thepinknews.com/2019/04/30/anti-lgbt-hate-preacher-james-david-manning-faces-abuse-allegations/.

I don’t believe that a person should be protected from fair criticism simply because that person stands behind a pulpit. Religious leadership is a position of influence, and influence carries responsibility. When a preacher makes extreme statements about other people, those statements deserve scrutiny. When a preacher makes claims about the behavior of others, the same standards of evidence should apply to the preacher’s own conduct. Nobody should be allowed to demand accountability from everybody else while insisting that their own actions must remain beyond examination.

That principle applies to every religious institution, every political movement, every community organization, and every person who builds a following around a message of moral authority. The issue isn’t whether a leader is popular, controversial, entertaining, or disliked. The issue is whether the leader’s conduct matches the standards that the leader demands from everyone else. If we believe that honesty matters, then honesty must matter even when the facts are uncomfortable or challenge our existing opinions.

THE RECORDING THAT BROUGHT THE ISSUE BACK

The recording at the center of this discussion has a history that deserves to be explained carefully. In 2019, published reporting described allegations made by a former student who said that Manning had sexually harassed her and touched her inappropriately. She was 18 when she secretly recorded a conversation in which he made sexual comments about her appearance. The recording became part of the public discussion after a HuffPost investigation examined allegations of abuse connected to the private school associated with the church. https://www.thepinknews.com/2019/04/30/anti-lgbt-hate-preacher-james-david-manning-faces-abuse-allegations/.

This detail matters because it establishes that the existence of a recording and the allegations surrounding it were publicly reported years ago. The recording wasn’t simply an anonymous rumor circulating without context. Media coverage described the woman’s account and quoted remarks attributed to Manning in the conversation. That doesn’t mean every accusation connected to the situation has been proven in court, but it does mean the subject has a documented public history that deserves accurate discussion.

WNYC reported in May 2019 that the former student said she had reported the matter to police and that the NYPD had investigated without bringing charges. WNYC also reported that Manning denied the accusations of abuse and sexual misconduct, describing the reporting as a politically motivated attack. Those facts must remain part of any responsible account of the controversy. An allegation shouldn’t be presented as a legal finding when no such finding has been established, and a denial shouldn’t be treated as proof that the allegation was false. Both details belong in the public record. https://wnyc.org/story/private-school-within-harlem-church-faces-abuse-accusations/.

My decision to revisit the old material came after a viewer reminded me of my earlier coverage. That comment prompted me to look for the recording, and I eventually found a copy through Amazon after failing to locate it on YouTube. I recovered the audio because I wanted to bring the earlier discussion back into public view. That’s my account of how this material resurfaced, and it’s an important part of why I’m revisiting the subject now.

I also believe that recovering older content can be valuable when the original material has disappeared from a platform. Independent commentary, interviews, recordings, and personal archives can preserve pieces of public discussion that might otherwise be difficult to find. But recovering a file isn’t the same as verifying every statement that may have accompanied it. Before republishing the material, the responsible approach is to check the audio, identify its source as clearly as possible, retain the relevant context, and distinguish what can actually be heard from what somebody claims it proves.

WHEN RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY BECOMES A QUESTION OF POWER

The larger issue reaches far beyond one pastor or one church. Religious leaders often occupy positions of unusual trust. People may turn to them during grief, financial hardship, family conflict, loneliness, or moments when they feel lost. A young person may see a pastor as a teacher, counselor, protector, and representative of God. That relationship can be meaningful and positive, but it can also create an imbalance when the leader controls access, approval, discipline, or a person’s sense of spiritual worth.

That imbalance makes boundaries especially important. A leader who has influence over a person’s education, community standing, family relationships, or spiritual life must understand that personal power can affect how freely that person feels able to speak. Someone may be afraid of losing support, being shamed in public, being rejected by family, or being told that questioning a leader amounts to questioning God. These pressures can make it harder to challenge inappropriate conduct or report behavior that causes harm.

It’s also important to distinguish between adults and minors. A person who is 18 is legally an adult in many circumstances, but that doesn’t mean every interaction with someone in a position of authority is automatically free from pressure or manipulation. At the same time, a significant age difference or an uncomfortable conversation doesn’t by itself establish a crime. The details, the circumstances, the available evidence, and the applicable law all matter. Serious accusations require serious examination, not careless assumptions.

This is why conversations about religious misconduct should never be reduced to a contest between a pastor’s supporters and his critics. When a person comes forward with an allegation, the first responsibility is to take the claim seriously enough to examine it fairly. That doesn’t mean automatically declaring the accused guilty. It means listening, preserving relevant evidence, seeking independent verification, and allowing the facts to be assessed without intimidation or a rush to judgment.

The same principle applies when the accused person is famous, influential, wealthy, politically connected, or surrounded by devoted followers. Public standing should neither condemn somebody automatically nor protect somebody from scrutiny. If a person has done nothing wrong, a fair process should help establish what the evidence supports. If misconduct has occurred, the person’s position should not be used to prevent the truth from emerging.

THE DANGER OF SILENCE AND THE DANGER OF RUMOR

One of the biggest problems in conversations about alleged misconduct is that people often move between two extremes. Some people dismiss every accusation because they admire the person being accused. Others treat an accusation as conclusive proof before the evidence has been fully examined. Both reactions can interfere with the search for truth. Blind loyalty can silence people who need to be heard, while reckless accusations can damage reputations and make legitimate concerns easier to dismiss.

The answer isn’t silence. The answer is careful, persistent examination. A recording should be presented with its source and context whenever possible. A person’s words should be represented accurately rather than selectively edited to create a misleading impression. If an important section is missing, that limitation should be disclosed. If the recording’s authenticity or completeness hasn’t been independently established, the audience should be told. Those precautions don’t weaken the message. They help protect its credibility.

Public accountability also requires resisting the temptation to fill gaps in the evidence with dramatic explanations. When a video disappears from a platform, people may immediately assume that somebody powerful ordered its removal. But a removed video doesn’t, by itself, prove censorship, a conspiracy, or an effort to protect the person being discussed. Platform policies, copyright complaints, account enforcement, and other factors can affect whether material remains available. Unless reliable evidence establishes a particular explanation, the honest answer is that the reason may be unknown.

That’s especially important when discussing Manning’s history. His controversial rhetoric and the allegations reported in 2019 provide substantial material for public discussion without adding unsupported claims about secret forces, powerful enemies, or coordinated efforts to silence him. A strong argument doesn’t need an imaginary explanation to make it sound more dramatic. It needs accurate facts, clear reasoning, and the courage to address what the evidence actually shows.

The same standard must apply to my own work. If I expect viewers to question the claims made by religious leaders, politicians, institutions, and media personalities, I must also expect them to question my claims. I should be able to explain where information came from, what the evidence establishes, and where uncertainty remains. That’s not surrendering my independence. It’s demonstrating that the search for truth matters more than protecting my ego or winning an argument.

WHAT THE PUBLIC DESERVES TO KNOW

When people hear a recording of a religious leader making sexual comments about a student, they may understandably have questions. What was the relationship between the people involved? What happened before and after the recorded conversation? Was there a wider pattern of behavior? Were other people affected? What did investigators establish? What did the person accused say in response? These are reasonable questions, but their answers must come from evidence rather than assumptions.

The public also deserves to understand the difference between a troubling conversation and a proven legal violation. A statement can be inappropriate, disturbing, or inconsistent with the moral standards a leader promotes without automatically proving a specific crime. Conversely, the absence of criminal charges doesn’t establish that every reported interaction was proper or that a person who raised concerns was lying. Different questions require different forms of evidence and different standards of judgment.

In the case of Manning, the earlier reporting documented allegations from former students concerning the private school associated with ATLAH, including the sexual misconduct allegations involving the former student who made the recording. The reporting also documented Manning’s denial. Those are the facts I can responsibly present from the sources reviewed. I cannot use those reports alone to claim that every allegation has been proven, that a court established guilt, or that a new investigation has confirmed a fresh incident in 2026.

That distinction doesn’t require me to abandon my opinion about the public statements and conduct I have personally examined. I can strongly criticize rhetoric that I believe is harmful, question the behavior of people who claim moral authority, and demand transparency when credible allegations arise. But I must make clear when I’m expressing an opinion and when I’m reporting an established fact. The audience deserves that honesty, especially when the subject is controversial.

I also believe that people who have experienced misconduct should not be discouraged from speaking because the person they are discussing has a congregation, a title, or a loyal audience. People should have access to fair reporting, appropriate support, and a process that allows claims to be examined. At the same time, anyone accused of wrongdoing deserves a fair opportunity to respond. These principles aren’t enemies of each other. They are both essential to a society that takes truth and justice seriously.

WHY I’M BRINGING THIS BACK NOW

My return to this subject began with a comment beneath a recent video. Someone remembered my earlier coverage, and that reminder sent me searching for material I had been unable to find since my YouTube channel disappeared. When I located the old file through Amazon and recovered the audio, I recognized an opportunity to revisit a discussion that had once been part of my work. I want people who are encountering this subject for the first time to understand that there is an earlier history worth examining.

I also want to make clear that I don’t need to invent a new story to justify presenting the old material. The existence of earlier reporting, the public controversy surrounding Manning’s rhetoric, and the documented allegations from 2019 already provide a legitimate basis for discussion. What matters now is presenting the material accurately, making the relevant context available, and allowing the audience to consider the evidence for itself.

My personal feelings about a public figure shouldn’t replace the facts, and I won’t pretend that I have no opinions. I believe people who use the authority of religion should be held to the same basic standards of honesty, accountability, and respect that they expect from others. But those standards must apply equally to the people making accusations and to the people responding to them. Nobody should be exempt from scrutiny, and nobody should be condemned on the basis of claims that have not been established.

The broader lesson is that a pulpit doesn’t make somebody perfect, a title doesn’t make somebody infallible, and a large following doesn’t make every statement true. Religious institutions can provide comfort, community, and guidance, but the people who lead them remain human beings who must answer questions about their actions. When credible concerns arise, the proper response is neither automatic condemnation nor blind defense. It’s a fair examination of the evidence and a commitment to finding out what actually happened.

That’s why I’m bringing this material back into the conversation. I’m revisiting an older recording, explaining how I rediscovered it, and placing it alongside the reporting that can be independently checked. I want people to listen carefully, read critically, and reach conclusions based on the evidence rather than loyalty, anger, or speculation. If we genuinely believe that truth matters, then we must be willing to examine uncomfortable questions without abandoning fairness. The truth doesn’t need exaggeration to matter, and accountability should never depend on who happens to be standing behind the pulpit.
