There are certain subjects that make people uncomfortable the moment they’re brought into the conversation. Some subjects are so disturbing that people would rather pretend they don’t exist, especially when those subjects involve institutions they have been taught to respect, defend, and never question. But sometimes the most uncomfortable conversations are the ones that need to be had the most. When it comes to the sexual exploitation of children by individuals hiding behind religious authority, I have absolutely no interest in making anybody comfortable.

My artwork titled “Saint Pedophilia First Church of the Ejaculate Emissions” was created as a satirical expression of my disgust with the sexual abuse of children by individuals who were supposed to represent morality, spiritual guidance, and protection. The title is intentionally outrageous, disrespectful, and designed to make people stop and look. Some might consider it offensive, especially those who identify strongly with the religious institution being criticized. But that’s precisely where the conversation begins. Why are people sometimes more offended by an illustration exposing wrongdoing than by the actual wrongdoing itself?

I created this piece sometime around the late 2000s or early 2010s, although I can’t remember the exact year. What I do remember is the anger and frustration I felt toward the growing number of disturbing revelations involving religious leaders and the children who were victimized under their watch. I wanted to take the public images of some of these individuals and turn them into a satirical statement that couldn’t easily be ignored. I wasn’t interested in decorating a wall with something pretty. I wanted to create something that would challenge the viewer’s conscience.

There is something especially sinister about the betrayal of a child by an adult who has been given automatic trust. Children are naturally vulnerable, and they often believe that the adults placed in positions of authority are there to protect them. Parents may leave their children with religious leaders because they believe those individuals possess a special moral responsibility. Unfortunately, predators understand how powerful that trust can be. They know that a respected title, a familiar face, and an established reputation can become powerful tools for gaining access to innocent children.

What makes this subject even more disturbing is that sexual abuse within religious institutions isn’t limited to one denomination, one congregation, or one particular type of religious leader. It represents a much larger problem involving power, secrecy, manipulation, and the protection of reputations at the expense of vulnerable people. Whether somebody wears a Catholic collar, stands behind a Baptist pulpit, leads a congregation, or occupies a respected position in the community, none of those things automatically make that person trustworthy. That’s the uncomfortable truth that inspired this artwork.

THE MASK OF RELIGIOUS RESPECTABILITY

One of the things I’ve always found fascinating about human behavior is how easily people can be influenced by appearances. We have been conditioned to associate certain clothing, titles, occupations, and positions with good character. Put a uniform on somebody, give them an impressive title, place them behind a desk, or surround them with an atmosphere of authority, and many people will automatically assume they’re dealing with an honorable individual.

Religion can take this psychological conditioning to another level. A person who wears religious garments, speaks about scripture, and stands before a congregation can receive a level of trust that most ordinary people would have to spend years earning. Some people will defend that individual before they even know the facts because their minds have already connected the religious position with righteousness. That’s a dangerous mistake when the person being trusted has hidden intentions.

Predators understand human vulnerability. They don’t necessarily walk around looking frightening, behaving strangely, or announcing their intentions to the world. Some are exceptionally charming, patient, convincing, and skilled at reading the emotions of others. They learn how to present themselves in ways that make people lower their guard. They understand that gaining trust can be far more effective than demanding it.

This is one of the reasons I have always believed that people need to look beyond appearances when evaluating those who have access to their children. A religious title doesn’t erase human weakness. A position of authority doesn’t eliminate the possibility of criminal behavior. And somebody who can quote scripture from memory isn’t automatically somebody who lives by the principles contained within it.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM WORKING IN CORRECTIONS

My perspective on this subject didn’t come exclusively from reading newspaper headlines or watching television reports. During my years working in corrections, I had direct exposure to individuals who had been incarcerated for various crimes, including sexual offenses involving children. I saw how the prison environment treated certain categories of offenders and how other inmates often viewed them.

There were individuals convicted of crimes against children who were separated from the general inmate population because of the danger they could face from other prisoners. In that environment, the nature of someone’s offense could make them a target. It was an entirely different world from the respectable public image they might have presented before their arrest. The contrast between the person people thought they knew and the person revealed through their criminal conduct could be disturbing.

One thing I learned from observing human behavior in that environment is that somebody’s outward personality isn’t a reliable measure of their character. A person can appear pleasant, polite, intelligent, and completely ordinary while concealing behavior that is deeply destructive. That’s why I don’t believe people should ever confuse a convincing personality with genuine goodness.

Now consider what happens when somebody with those characteristics occupies a position that already carries enormous public trust. What happens when that individual is not simply another adult in the community but a religious leader whose words are accepted as spiritual guidance? What happens when parents believe that their children are in the safest possible hands because the person watching them is supposed to represent God?

That’s where the danger becomes even more serious. Religious authority can create an environment where questions are discouraged, criticism is treated as disrespect, and allegations against respected leaders are viewed as attacks on the entire congregation. A predator who understands that environment may recognize that the institution itself can become part of the shield protecting him.

WHEN THE INSTITUTION PROTECTS ITSELF

One of the most disturbing aspects of the sexual abuse scandals involving Catholic clergy has been the documented pattern of institutional failures. Investigations, court proceedings, survivor accounts, and official reports have exposed situations in which complaints were mishandled, victims were ignored, and abusive clergy members were moved or reassigned rather than effectively removed from positions where they could encounter other children.

Think about the implications of that for a moment. Imagine a parent trusting an institution with the most precious thing in their life, only to discover that the people responsible for protecting that child may have known about an abusive individual and failed to take appropriate action. Imagine the psychological devastation of learning that somebody who could have intervened chose instead to protect an organization’s reputation.

This isn’t merely a failure of public relations. It’s a failure of moral responsibility. When an institution becomes more concerned with controlling information than protecting children, its priorities have become dangerously distorted. The reputation of a religious organization should never be worth more than the safety of a child.

And let’s be clear about something. An institution cannot honestly claim to defend family values while knowingly allowing children to remain exposed to individuals who have abused them or pose a danger to others. It cannot preach compassion while treating survivors as inconvenient problems. It cannot demand respect from the public while refusing to demonstrate accountability when serious wrongdoing is uncovered.

The problem becomes even worse when people confuse criticism of an institution with an attack on their personal faith. Those are two different things. A person can believe in God, value scripture, attend religious services, and still recognize that religious organizations are operated by human beings who are capable of corruption and criminal behavior. Questioning the conduct of religious leadership isn’t the same as rejecting every spiritual belief associated with that institution.

THE DOUBLE STANDARD OF WHO WE FEAR

There is another detail in this illustration that I want people to pay close attention to. In the background, I placed a Black man wearing prison clothing with Galatians 1:9 written across it. The symbolism is intentional because I wanted to challenge the way society sometimes decides who represents danger before knowing anything about that person’s actual character.

We’ve all seen how quickly some people become suspicious when they encounter a Black man walking down a street. Some will clutch their belongings, lock their car doors, cross to the other side of the street, or make assumptions based entirely on appearance. A person who has done absolutely nothing wrong can become the object of suspicion simply because of the way society has conditioned others to perceive him.

Yet some of those same people may extend unquestioning trust to an older religious leader because he wears a collar, speaks in a calm voice, or occupies a position that society has traditionally respected. They may never consider that the individual they automatically trust could potentially be the person from whom their children need protection.

I’m not suggesting that every Black man is harmless or that every religious leader is dangerous. That would be just another form of foolish generalization. My point is that character must be judged through behavior and evidence, not through clothing, race, titles, or social standing. The prison uniform doesn’t tell the entire story of a human being, and neither does a religious collar.

The scripture on that man’s clothing is also important to the message. Galatians 1:9 warns against accepting a different gospel from the one originally received, invoking a powerful condemnation against those who distort the message being taught. I used that scripture because I wanted to create a visual contradiction between the teachings people claim to represent and the conduct of those who exploit the trust associated with those teachings.

If somebody stands before a congregation preaching righteousness while secretly violating innocent children, what exactly are they representing? If somebody uses the language of holiness to gain access to vulnerable families, shouldn’t their conduct be examined even more closely? The scripture becomes a reminder that religious words mean very little when the behavior behind them contradicts everything they claim to teach.

THE BLACK CHURCH IS NOT EXEMPT

While the Catholic Church has received enormous attention because of its history of sexual abuse scandals, I would be making a serious mistake if I suggested that this problem belongs exclusively to Catholicism. Sexual exploitation and abuse have also occurred within Protestant churches, independent ministries, evangelical congregations, and other religious environments.

The Black church is not exempt either. Its historical importance within African American communities doesn’t make every individual who occupies a pulpit automatically honorable. The church has served as a place of spiritual strength, community organization, education, fellowship, and cultural survival. But those positive contributions should never become an excuse for ignoring misconduct by religious leaders.

Sometimes the emotional connection people have with a church can make allegations against its leadership especially difficult to accept. A pastor may have baptized their children, married family members, buried loved ones, and stood beside the congregation during its most difficult moments. When accusations emerge against somebody who has occupied that position for decades, people can feel as though their entire spiritual foundation is being challenged.

That’s precisely why independent accountability is so important. A congregation should never become a courtroom where the accused leader’s popularity determines whether the victim is believed. Nor should the financial success, public influence, or charitable activities of a religious organization be used to distract from allegations of abuse.

Children don’t owe their silence to an institution. They don’t owe their suffering to a congregation’s reputation. And they certainly don’t owe their innocence to somebody else’s desire to preserve a religious legacy.

WHY I USED SATIRE TO EXPOSE SOMETHING SO SERIOUS

Some people might look at the title of this artwork and immediately decide that it’s too vulgar, too disrespectful, or simply too offensive. I understand that reaction. The title was never intended to be polite. It was designed to make a statement through exaggeration, dark humor, and an unmistakable expression of disgust.

But there’s a difference between making light of the victims and using satire to expose the people and systems responsible for their suffering. My target was never the children who were abused. My target was the hypocrisy, the predators, the institutional protection, and the culture of silence that allows this kind of behavior to continue.

Sometimes humor can penetrate a wall of denial that a serious speech cannot. A person might scroll past a conventional headline about institutional abuse, but an outrageous illustration can make them stop and ask what they’re looking at. Once they stop, the real conversation can begin.

The newspapers, faces, clothing, and background details in this illustration were all part of that visual conversation. I wanted the viewer to examine the contradictions. Here we have people who were supposed to represent spiritual purity, yet the subject of the illustration exposes the ugly reality of sexual exploitation and the misuse of religious authority.

I also wanted to demonstrate that art doesn’t have to be beautiful to be meaningful. Sometimes the most valuable thing an artist can create is something that disturbs the viewer enough to make them question what they’ve been conditioned to accept. If a drawing makes somebody uncomfortable because it challenges their assumptions, then perhaps that discomfort deserves examination rather than immediate rejection.

THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T WANT TO SEE IT

I remember that not everybody appreciated this artwork. Some people who identified with the Catholic Church didn’t want to see it, and I understand that religious criticism can feel personal when somebody has invested years of their life in a particular institution. But I also believe that the refusal to confront uncomfortable realities is one of the reasons wrongdoing can remain hidden for so long.

There is a difference between defending your faith and defending somebody who has abused children. There is a difference between respecting a religious institution’s history and refusing to acknowledge its failures. And there is a difference between being offended by an artist’s language and being concerned about the suffering of innocent people.

When people become more concerned about the tone of an accusation than the substance of the wrongdoing, the conversation can quickly become distorted. Suddenly, everybody is debating whether the artwork is offensive, whether the title is appropriate, and whether the artist has gone too far. Meanwhile, the original subject gets pushed into the background.

I don’t want that to happen here. The children who suffered deserve to remain at the center of this conversation. Their experiences should not disappear beneath arguments about religious loyalty, institutional pride, or somebody’s personal discomfort with satire.

An organization that has done nothing wrong should have no reason to fear honest examination. And an organization that has failed should be willing to confront those failures instead of demanding that everybody remain silent.

PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN, QUESTION AUTHORITY, AND STAY AWAKE

The most important message I want people to take away from this artwork has nothing to do with whether they attend a Catholic church, a Baptist church, a Pentecostal congregation, or no religious institution at all. It has everything to do with the responsibility adults have to protect children.

Pay attention to the people who want access to your children. Pay attention to individuals who constantly seek private opportunities with them, disregard reasonable boundaries, or attempt to create relationships that exclude parents and other responsible adults. Pay attention when a child suddenly becomes uncomfortable around somebody they previously trusted. Don’t automatically dismiss changes in behavior or expressions of fear simply because the person being questioned has an impressive reputation.

Children must also know that they can speak openly about uncomfortable experiences without being punished, blamed, or shamed. They need to understand that their bodies belong to them and that no adult has the right to use religion, affection, authority, gifts, or threats to manipulate them into secrecy.

And parents must understand that protecting children sometimes means questioning people they have known for years. It might mean challenging a respected pastor, reporting an allegation, refusing unsupervised access, or seeking outside help when an institution is unwilling to take appropriate action. That responsibility doesn’t disappear because the individual being questioned is popular or financially influential.

Religious organizations should establish clear safeguarding rules, report suspected abuse to appropriate authorities, cooperate with independent investigations, and remove individuals who pose a danger to children from positions of access. Internal discipline and private reassignment cannot substitute for criminal accountability when a crime has occurred.

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS…

Looking back at this illustration, I realize that although I can’t remember the exact day I created it, the anger that inspired it remains just as relevant. I was looking at a problem that went far beyond the individuals whose faces appeared in my drawing. I was looking at a culture in which people could exploit the trust of families, hide behind religious respectability, and sometimes benefit from institutions that were more interested in protecting themselves than protecting children. That’s a reality that deserves to be exposed regardless of how uncomfortable the conversation becomes.

This is also why I believe preserving artwork like this is important. These illustrations capture a particular period in my life, the issues that disturbed me, and the observations that shaped my thinking. Some people may see an old drawing and consider it nothing more than a provocative piece of underground satire. But I see a historical record of my concerns, a visual commentary on human behavior, and a reminder that certain problems don’t disappear simply because the news cycle moves on. The artwork may be old, but the message remains alive.

I don’t care how impressive somebody’s title happens to be, how many people attend their church, how much money their organization collects, or how many influential people they know. Nobody should be placed above accountability when the safety of children is involved. Faith should never become a hiding place for criminal behavior, and religious leadership should never become a shortcut to unquestioned access to vulnerable people. If anything, the greater the trust placed in somebody, the greater their responsibility to honor that trust.

So whether you’re a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, religious leader, or simply somebody who cares about the next generation, keep your eyes open. Don’t allow appearances to make your decisions for you. Don’t confuse popularity with integrity, religious vocabulary with moral character, or institutional loyalty with righteousness. Protect children, listen when they speak, investigate legitimate concerns, and never allow somebody else’s reputation to become more important than their safety.

And finally, let me say this: my artwork isn’t asking anybody to abandon their faith. It’s asking people to stop abandoning their common sense in the presence of religious authority. Believe what you believe, worship where you choose, and respect the spiritual journey of others, but never surrender your responsibility to think, question, and protect the innocent. Saint Pedophilia First Church of the Ejaculate Emissions might make you laugh, cringe, or shake your head, but if it makes you look more carefully at the people entrusted with our children, then this piece has accomplished something far more important than simply hanging on a wall. This is LanceScurv, and sometimes the truth needs to be drawn in a way that makes it impossible to look away.
