WHEN YOU SURRENDER YOUR MIND, SOMEONE ELSE CAN TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE

There are some tragedies that are so disturbing that they force us to stop whatever we’re doing and examine the world around us a little more closely. We hear about terrible things happening in distant places, shake our heads, express our sympathy, and eventually move on to the next headline. But every once in a while, something happens that should make us question not only the people responsible for such evil, but also the psychological and spiritual conditions that allow human beings to surrender so much of themselves to another person. What happened in Kenya is one of those moments. It should disturb every person who values human life, independent thought, family, and the freedom to make decisions without being controlled by another human being.

The horrifying case involving Paul Mackenzie and the Good News International Church is difficult to comprehend. A man who presented himself as a religious leader persuaded followers to participate in an apocalyptic belief system that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. Children were among the most vulnerable victims, and their suffering makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking. When we examine what happened, we’re not simply looking at a disturbing religious movement. We’re looking at the terrifying consequences of unchecked authority, psychological control, blind obedience, and the willingness of one human being to place another person’s commands above the most basic responsibilities of life.

But there’s another question that has been weighing heavily on my mind. How does someone become so deeply attached to another human being that they surrender their own judgment? How does a person reach a point where the instructions of someone else become more important than their own instincts, their children, their family, and even their survival? These are uncomfortable questions, but they’re questions we need to ask. Because while the events in Kenya were extreme, the underlying patterns of manipulation, emotional dependency, and psychological domination can be found in places much closer to home.

I want to introduce a concept that I’ve spoken about before, and that’s what I call the hollow human. I’m using the word hollow to describe someone who has gradually surrendered their independent judgment, personal boundaries, and sense of direction to outside influences. It’s like an empty space waiting for someone else to occupy it. When a person has no firm sense of personal authority, purpose, or independent thought, they can become extremely vulnerable to someone who appears confident enough to tell them how to live. This doesn’t mean that someone who has been manipulated is unintelligent, worthless, or responsible for the abuse they experience. It means we need to understand how the human mind can become vulnerable to control.

And that’s where this conversation becomes much bigger than one man in Kenya. It’s about religious leaders, romantic partners, narcissistic personalities, financial manipulators, predators, and anyone who recognizes another person’s emotional vulnerabilities and decides to use them for personal gain. Sometimes the manipulation begins with a smile, a kind word, a promise, or an offer of protection. It doesn’t always begin with a threat. Sometimes the person who eventually takes control of your life is the very person you initially welcomed into it because you believed they had your best interests at heart.

THE SHAKAHOLA TRAGEDY: WHEN BLIND OBEDIENCE BECOMES DEADLY

On November 6, 2026, a Kenyan court sentenced Paul Mackenzie, the leader of the Good News International Church, to a total of 200 years in prison for the murder of 191 people. Tragically, 190 of those victims were children. The sentence consisted of two consecutive 100-year terms. Twenty-eight other people convicted in connection with the case also received lengthy prison sentences ranging from 70 to 160 years. Mackenzie still faces additional legal proceedings involving other serious charges connected to the Shakahola tragedy.

The case shocked the world because of the nature of the instructions given to his followers. Mackenzie promoted an apocalyptic religious message and instructed people to fast and starve themselves and their children to death because they would supposedly meet Jesus. Authorities uncovered more than 400 bodies in mass graves in the Shakahola Forest near Kenya’s coast. The investigation revealed an organized system in which guards helped prevent people from escaping while the deadly fasting was enforced. Children were reportedly subjected to the starvation process first. Autopsies also revealed evidence of strangulation, blunt force trauma, and other forms of violence.

Think about that for a moment. Children who depended entirely upon the adults around them for food, protection, and survival were placed in an environment where their basic needs were deliberately denied. These were young human beings who had no meaningful power to challenge the authority controlling their circumstances. They depended upon adults to make decisions that would preserve their lives, yet those entrusted with their care became part of a system that destroyed them.

The discovery of more than 400 bodies tells us that the horror extended far beyond the 191 specific murder convictions covered by this particular sentence. The scale of the tragedy is almost impossible to absorb. There are families who will never receive the opportunity to grow old with their loved ones, parents who will never see their children become adults, and children whose entire futures were stolen before they had an opportunity to experience life.

I want to be very clear about something. My heart goes out to every family affected by this tragedy. I am not interested in standing comfortably on the outside and pretending that I know every conversation, every circumstance, or every emotional struggle that took place inside those families. I will never suggest that parents who were deceived or controlled should automatically be blamed for the crimes committed against their children. The people who organized, enforced, and carried out these crimes must answer for their actions. But we also need to examine how an environment of extreme obedience can develop and how it can become so powerful that people stop questioning what they’re being told.

THE MOST DANGEROUS MANIPULATORS DON’T ALWAYS LOOK DANGEROUS

One of the things that caught my attention about this case was the background of the man at the center of it. Mackenzie had previously worked as a taxi driver before becoming a religious leader and establishing his church. There’s nothing inherently wrong with being a taxi driver, and there’s certainly nothing about that profession that should make anyone suspicious of another person. People come from every walk of life, and the evil actions of one individual should never become an excuse to condemn an entire group of hardworking people.

But there’s something worth examining about the ability to move through everyday society, meet different people, learn about their lives, and eventually use that knowledge to influence them. A person who understands how to communicate, identify vulnerabilities, and recognize what others desperately want to hear can become extremely persuasive. That ability can be used for good or for evil. The difference lies in the intentions and moral character of the person using it.

A manipulator doesn’t necessarily walk into your life announcing that they intend to control you. They may initially appear generous, thoughtful, compassionate, intelligent, and unusually interested in your well-being. They may agree with your values, share your religious beliefs, support your ambitions, and make you feel as though you’ve finally met someone who understands you. But agreement and understanding can also become tools of manipulation when they’re being used to gain access to your mind and influence your decisions.

This is one of the reasons I constantly encourage people to slow down when allowing someone new into their lives. Don’t become so impressed by a person’s confidence that you forget to examine their character. Don’t become so excited because someone appears to understand you that you automatically surrender your judgment. Don’t confuse a person’s ability to speak beautifully with their ability to live honorably.

Some of the most dangerous people you’ll ever encounter may initially be among the most pleasant. They know how to make you comfortable. They know how to make you feel special. They know how to create an emotional connection that makes you less likely to question their behavior later. By the time the demands become unreasonable, you may already be emotionally invested in the relationship and reluctant to admit that something is terribly wrong.

THE HOLLOW HUMAN: WHO IS REALLY CONTROLLING YOUR LIFE?

Now let’s get into the concept that I really want people to think about. What happens when a human being becomes so dependent upon outside approval, direction, and validation that they stop exercising their own independent judgment? What happens when someone else becomes the voice that tells them what to think, what to believe, where to go, who to associate with, and how to conduct their lives?

That’s what I mean when I use the term hollow.

Think about an actual hollow object. It has an empty space inside. It may have a beautiful exterior, an impressive appearance, and an attractive shape, but there’s an absence of substance within that space. Now, I’m not saying that a person who has been manipulated has no soul or no intelligence. I’m talking about the psychological condition that develops when people repeatedly surrender their own authority to someone else. They become so accustomed to being directed that they eventually struggle to make decisions without outside approval.

And this isn’t limited to religion. You can find this dynamic in romantic relationships, friendships, families, workplaces, entertainment, politics, and financial arrangements. Everywhere you look, there are people who have become dependent upon another person’s approval to the point where they no longer recognize their own needs.

Let me give you an example. Imagine a beautiful, intelligent, accomplished woman who has worked hard to establish herself. She’s educated, financially independent, socially connected, and capable of managing her own life. She has opportunities to meet men who share her ambitions and who have demonstrated responsibility and discipline. Yet she becomes involved with someone who contributes very little to her life. He has no interest in improving himself, has no meaningful plans, and seems perfectly comfortable allowing her to carry the responsibilities of the relationship.

I’m not suggesting that a person’s financial status determines their worth or that every relationship needs to be built around money. That’s not the point. The issue is whether the relationship is built upon mutual respect, responsibility, and genuine contribution. When one person continually gives while the other continually takes, something becomes seriously unbalanced.

At first, she may believe she can help him. She may think that her love, patience, and support will inspire him to become a better person. But eventually she discovers that her generosity has become an expectation. Her resources become his resources. Her time becomes his time. Her home becomes his home. Her responsibilities become his responsibilities. And somehow, the more she gives, the more he expects.

After a while, the woman who once appeared so confident begins to lose her enthusiasm. Her energy changes. Her personality becomes overshadowed by the constant demands of someone who has learned how to benefit from her generosity. What happened? She didn’t necessarily lose her intelligence or her ability to function. But she allowed a relationship to develop in which her boundaries gradually became weaker.

That’s the same psychological principle of surrendering personal authority, although the consequences may be very different. Not every manipulative relationship results in physical violence, but the erosion of someone’s independence can still cause tremendous emotional and financial damage.

HOW MANIPULATORS TEST YOUR BOUNDARIES

One of the most important things to understand about manipulation is that it often happens gradually. A person may not begin with the most outrageous demand. They may start with something small to see how you respond. They ask for a favor, request money, demand more of your time, or expect you to make an exception to a boundary you’ve already established.

When you agree, they may come back with something slightly bigger. Then something bigger again. Before long, the relationship has developed a pattern in which your willingness to accommodate them becomes an expectation rather than a gift.

This is why I tell people to pay attention to how others respond when you say no. You can learn a tremendous amount about someone’s character when you refuse to give them what they want. A person who genuinely respects you may be disappointed, but they will still recognize your right to make your own decision. A manipulative person may become angry, withdraw affection, insult you, spread rumors, or attempt to make you feel guilty for having boundaries.

And suddenly you’re the bad person because you refused to continue participating in an arrangement that benefited them.

I’ve seen this type of behavior in different forms. Someone enters your life and seems interested in friendship, but eventually every conversation becomes an opportunity for them to unload their personal problems onto you. They want you available whenever they need emotional support, but they may have very little interest in your life or your well-being.

They call you when they’re unhappy. They call you when they’re frustrated. They call you when their relationships are falling apart. They expect you to listen, encourage them, and provide endless emotional energy. But the moment you establish a boundary and explain that you cannot be their permanent emotional dumping ground, suddenly you’re accused of being insensitive.

That’s manipulation through emotional obligation. Your kindness has been mistaken for unlimited access.

The same thing happens with people who repeatedly invent emergencies to obtain money. They tell you that a relative is sick, that their rent is overdue, or that they’re facing some terrible financial crisis. You help them because you believe their circumstances are genuine. Then you discover that the money was used for something completely different. Instead of acknowledging your generosity, they may return with another story.

The lesson isn’t that we should stop helping people. The lesson is that generosity without judgment can become an open invitation to exploitation. You can be compassionate without allowing another person to make you financially responsible for their dishonesty.

THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION: DISCERNMENT IS NOT ALWAYS USED FOR GOOD

Now I want to move into the spiritual side of this conversation because I believe it’s an important part of understanding how manipulation works.

When many people hear the word spiritual, they automatically associate it with goodness, peace, kindness, and positive energy. But spirituality, as people understand it through their different religious and philosophical beliefs, also raises questions about darkness, deception, temptation, and the misuse of influence. Simply presenting yourself as a spiritual person doesn’t automatically make you a good person.

Think about the ocean. You can sit on a beautiful beach and look at the water while enjoying the peaceful scenery. You may feel relaxed and completely at ease. But beneath that beautiful surface are powerful currents, dangerous conditions, and creatures that can pose a serious threat. The appearance of peace doesn’t tell you everything about what exists underneath.

The same principle applies to human beings. Someone can present a wonderful public image while concealing intentions that are completely different from what they claim. You cannot determine a person’s character simply by how they speak, how they dress, how many people admire them, or how frequently they mention God.

And this brings me to discernment.

People often speak about having the gift of discernment as though it’s automatically an indication of moral superiority. But the ability to recognize another person’s emotional vulnerabilities isn’t necessarily a virtuous quality. Someone can be exceptionally good at reading people and still use that ability to exploit them.

A dishonest romantic partner may recognize which person is emotionally vulnerable and searching for affection. A predator may recognize which household has weak boundaries. A financial scammer may identify someone who is lonely, trusting, or desperate for an opportunity. A manipulative religious leader may recognize people who are searching for spiritual direction and belonging.

The ability to understand people can be used to protect them, or it can be used to take advantage of them.

Even outside religious settings, people who manipulate others often have a remarkable ability to recognize what someone wants, fears, or needs. They may understand exactly which words will make another person feel appreciated and which promises will make them more willing to cooperate.

That’s why discernment must be accompanied by character. Intelligence without integrity can become dangerous. Persuasion without compassion can become exploitation. Influence without accountability can become a weapon.

From my own spiritual perspective, I believe we should never assume that every person who confidently claims to represent a higher power is automatically operating in goodness. People should be judged by their conduct, their honesty, their treatment of others, and the consequences of their leadership. A person who claims to speak for God should not be exempt from reasonable questions.

WHEN RELIGION BECOMES A WEAPON OF CONTROL

One of the most troubling aspects of the Kenyan tragedy was the use of religious belief to justify the destruction of human life. The followers were reportedly told that schools and hospitals were satanic institutions and were discouraged from using them. The belief system promoted by the leader became so controlling that ordinary decisions involving education, healthcare, food, and family survival were placed under his authority.

This should make every person who participates in a religious organization stop and think.

Faith should never require you to abandon your responsibility to protect your children. Faith should never demand that you surrender your ability to think critically. Faith should never require you to accept abuse, ignore obvious danger, or place another human being above the basic value of life.

If someone tells you that questioning them means you’re questioning God, pay attention. If someone tells you that your family members are enemies simply because they disagree with the leader, pay attention. If someone tells you that outside information, medical care, education, or communication with people beyond the group must be avoided, pay attention.

Isolation can make manipulation much easier. When people are separated from alternative sources of information, discouraged from communicating with outsiders, and taught to distrust anyone who questions the leader, their world becomes smaller. Eventually, the leader’s version of reality may become the only version they’re allowed to consider.

A healthy spiritual community should be able to withstand questions. Its leaders should be willing to explain their decisions and accept accountability. No pastor, preacher, prophet, teacher, or spiritual counselor should be above examination simply because they claim to possess special knowledge.

And don’t be fooled by the size of the congregation. A large crowd doesn’t prove that someone is trustworthy. Popularity isn’t evidence of character. Applause isn’t evidence of truth. Sometimes people follow a leader because they genuinely believe in the message. Others may follow because they’re afraid to leave, afraid of losing their relationships, or afraid of what will happen if they question the authority controlling their lives.

The important thing is to recognize that the number of people standing behind someone doesn’t tell you whether that person deserves your trust.

THE SAME CONTROL CAN EXIST INSIDE YOUR HOME

Now let’s bring this conversation closer to home because I don’t want anyone to believe that psychological domination only happens in distant countries or within unusual religious organizations.

There are people living ordinary lives who are being manipulated every single day. There are women working two jobs while supporting men who contribute almost nothing to their households. There are men being financially exploited by partners who understand how to use affection and emotional pressure to get what they want. There are parents who allow individuals into their homes without taking sufficient time to establish whether those people are trustworthy.

There are also situations involving children that deserve particular attention. Predators can spend considerable time building trust with adults, presenting themselves as helpful friends, dependable partners, or responsible caregivers. Their intentions may be concealed behind behavior that appears generous. That’s why trust should never replace appropriate safeguards when children are involved.

A person saying they love your children doesn’t automatically make them safe around your children. A person offering to help you doesn’t automatically deserve unlimited access to your household. A person who has been around for several years doesn’t automatically become entitled to your unquestioning confidence.

Trust must be earned through consistent conduct over time. Protecting children means maintaining appropriate boundaries, paying attention to warning signs, and taking concerns seriously rather than allowing appearances or emotional attachments to override common sense.

And this principle applies to friendships as well. You can meet someone who appears accomplished, intelligent, and interesting, only to discover that their primary interest in your relationship is having someone available to absorb their emotional problems. They may want your attention every day, but they may not respect your time or your personal obligations.

The moment you establish a boundary, their attitude changes. They may become hostile, accuse you of abandoning them, or attempt to make you feel guilty. But why should being a decent human being require you to sacrifice your peace and independence?

You can care about someone without becoming their emotional servant. You can help someone without becoming their financial provider. You can love someone without allowing them to control every aspect of your existence.

THE POWER OF THE NARCISSISTIC MANIPULATOR

Another part of this conversation involves people who have an overwhelming desire to control others. Some individuals become extremely uncomfortable when someone they believe they have influence over begins making independent decisions.

They may initially enjoy your intelligence, personality, ambition, and independence. But when those qualities lead you to disagree with them, the relationship can change dramatically. Suddenly your confidence becomes arrogance. Your boundaries become disrespect. Your questions become rebellion. Your refusal to cooperate becomes evidence that you’re a bad person.

This is one of the ways controlling individuals attempt to maintain authority. They redefine normal independence as disobedience and make you feel as though you have committed some terrible offense by exercising your right to make your own decisions.

Sometimes they use affection as a reward. When you agree with them, everything is wonderful. When you disagree, affection disappears. Sometimes they use humiliation, threats, financial pressure, or social isolation. Other times, they recruit people around them to reinforce their version of events.

This is sometimes called a smear campaign. Instead of addressing the actual disagreement, they attempt to damage your reputation. They tell other people that you’re difficult, unstable, ungrateful, or dangerous. They may surround themselves with supporters who repeat their accusations without examining the circumstances.

But understand something: the fact that several people agree with someone doesn’t automatically make that person correct. People can repeat false information. Groups can reinforce unhealthy behavior. Crowds can become convinced of things that an independent observer might question.

This is why you must maintain your own judgment even when the pressure to conform becomes overwhelming.

WHAT ARE YOU ALLOWING INTO YOUR LIFE?

Now I want you to ask yourself some uncomfortable questions. Who has access to your time, your money, your emotions, and your decisions? Are those people adding something meaningful to your life, or are they gradually consuming everything you have to offer?

Do you feel comfortable saying no? Can you disagree without fearing retaliation? Can you maintain friendships outside a particular relationship or organization? Are you allowed to make independent decisions, or does someone always have to approve what you do?

And perhaps the most important question is this: When you spend time with certain people, do you become a stronger version of yourself, or do you gradually become less confident, less independent, and less willing to trust your own judgment?

These are questions worth considering because manipulation doesn’t always arrive as an obvious threat. Sometimes it develops through repeated compromises that seem insignificant at first. You overlook a lie because you want to believe the person. You ignore a warning because you don’t want to create conflict. You surrender a boundary because you don’t want to disappoint someone. Eventually, you may discover that the relationship has become something you never intended it to be.

That’s why you need time alone to think. You need time away from the noise of other people’s demands and expectations. You need to examine your decisions without constantly seeking approval. Whether you describe that process as meditation, prayer, reflection, or simply quiet thinking, the important thing is to reconnect with your own judgment.

Your relationship with your creator, as you understand it, should not require you to surrender your ability to recognize danger. Spiritual reflection should strengthen your sense of responsibility, not make you more vulnerable to someone else’s demands.

KNOW YOUR WORTH BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DEFINES IT FOR YOU

I also want people to understand that personal strength doesn’t mean you never need help. Nobody knows everything. Nobody is completely immune to manipulation. People experience loneliness, grief, financial pressure, emotional distress, and periods of uncertainty. Those circumstances can make even intelligent and accomplished individuals more vulnerable than they realize.

The answer isn’t to become suspicious of every human being or to walk through life believing that everyone has evil intentions. The answer is to combine compassion with judgment. Be generous, but don’t become careless. Be friendly, but don’t abandon your boundaries. Be open to learning, but don’t surrender your ability to question what you’re being taught.

One of the greatest things you can develop is a strong understanding of who you are and what you stand for. When you know your values, you’re less likely to allow someone else to redefine them for their convenience. When you recognize your own strengths, you’re less likely to become dependent upon another person’s constant approval. When you understand your responsibilities, you’re less likely to surrender them to someone who promises to have all the answers.

And remember that a person who genuinely cares about you should want you to become stronger, not more dependent. They should want you to think, learn, grow, and develop your own capabilities. They shouldn’t need to destroy your independence to maintain a relationship with you.

THE FINAL QUESTION: ARE YOU LIVING YOUR OWN LIFE?

The tragedy in Kenya should never become just another shocking headline that disappears from our memory. Those children deserved protection, opportunity, education, and the chance to grow into adults. Their lives should never have been placed under the authority of someone who used religious claims to justify such horrific crimes. The families affected deserve compassion, and the people responsible deserve accountability.

But we also have a responsibility to examine the larger patterns that make manipulation possible. We must recognize that the desire for belonging, love, security, and spiritual direction can sometimes make people vulnerable to those who know how to exploit those needs. We must learn to recognize when someone is attempting to replace our judgment with their instructions.

I want people to think about the hollow human concept beyond this particular case. Think about the person who cannot make a decision without asking their controlling partner. Think about the person who gives away their paycheck because someone else knows how to manipulate their emotions. Think about the individual who has become so dependent upon a particular group that they are afraid to question anything. These are different circumstances with different levels of danger, but they all remind us of the importance of maintaining personal boundaries and independent thought.

Don’t allow another person to become the permanent authority over your existence. Don’t let someone’s charisma replace your judgment. Don’t let their promises silence your instincts. And don’t mistake their confidence for proof of their character. You can listen to people without surrendering your mind to them. You can respect spiritual leaders without treating them as unquestionable authorities. You can love people without allowing them to consume your identity.

Because once you stop thinking for yourself, someone else may begin thinking for you. Once you stop establishing boundaries, someone else may decide where those boundaries should be. And once you surrender your personal authority, you may discover that getting it back is much harder than giving it away.

So I want to leave you with one question. Are you truly living your own life, or have you become an open space waiting for somebody else to occupy it? Think about that carefully. Your mind, your body, your children, your resources, your future, and your relationship with your creator are not possessions for another human being to control. Protect them. Respect yourself enough to question what doesn’t make sense. And never allow someone else’s manufactured greatness to make you forget the value of your own humanity.
