Some truths are uncomfortable because they force us to confront the things we would rather ignore. They challenge the stories we tell ourselves, expose the weaknesses we have learned to excuse, and demand that we look beyond the convenient explanations we use to avoid personal responsibility. But if we genuinely care about the future of our people, then we cannot afford to remain silent whenever destructive behavior threatens to destroy another human being’s life.

After watching the changes in American society over the decades, I have become increasingly troubled by a particular mentality that seems determined to punish anybody who dares to rise above their circumstances. It’s a mentality that treats ambition as an insult, discipline as a weakness, and another person’s success as a personal attack. Instead of asking what they can learn from somebody who is moving forward, people consumed by this mindset would rather find a way to drag that person backward. And when this attitude becomes normalized, we create a culture in which potential is treated as a threat instead of something to celebrate.

My concern isn’t with Black people who are struggling, making mistakes, or trying to find their way through a difficult world. Every human being has battles that other people may never understand, and nobody should be reduced to the worst moment of their life. My concern is with the deliberate choice to inflict pain on others, especially when that pain is motivated by jealousy, insecurity, resentment, or a desire to establish dominance over somebody who has done nothing to deserve such treatment. There is a tremendous difference between struggling to succeed and actively resenting somebody else for trying.

The heartbreaking consequences of this mentality become even more painful when we see young lives destroyed before they have had an opportunity to discover what they could become. The tragedy involving fifteen-year-old Javis Frimpong forces us to confront difficult questions about the way we raise our children, the influences we allow to shape them, and the hostility that can emerge when young people learn to see one another as enemies instead of human beings. My heart goes out to his family, particularly his father, who must now face a loss that no parent should ever have to endure.

And because this tragedy touches on the relationship between Black Americans, Africans, and the wider diaspora, I believe we must discuss it with honesty, compassion, and courage. We must be willing to condemn destructive behavior without condemning entire populations. We must be able to demand justice without manufacturing new enemies among people who share many of our struggles. Most importantly, we must recognize that the future of our communities depends on whether we can replace envy with encouragement, irresponsibility with accountability, and division with a genuine commitment to building something better.

THE POISON OF RESENTING ANOTHER PERSON’S PROGRESS

One of the most troubling things a person can do is become so dissatisfied with their own life that they begin to resent anybody who appears to be moving forward. Instead of using another person’s progress as evidence that improvement is possible, they interpret it as a reminder of everything they believe they lack. Rather than examining their own decisions, developing their abilities, or finding a better direction, they search for reasons to criticize the person who is making an effort.

I’ve seen how destructive this mentality can become, and I have absolutely no respect for the behavior it produces. I can appreciate a brother who works hard, treats people with dignity, takes care of his family, and tries to improve his circumstances. I don’t need him to have the same background, income, education, or opinions that I have. If he is doing something positive with his life, I can recognize that achievement without feeling threatened by it. His success doesn’t diminish mine, and my progress shouldn’t require his failure.

But there are people who cannot look at another person’s accomplishments without searching for something negative to say. If somebody becomes educated, they ridicule him for trying to be different. If somebody builds a business, they search for a reason to undermine it. If somebody avoids trouble, they accuse him of acting superior. If somebody develops discipline and begins to make better choices, they may become the target of the very people who should be celebrating his transformation.

What kind of thinking is that? What kind of insecurity makes another person’s improvement feel like an attack? And what happens to a community when people learn that the safest way to fit in is to hide their ambitions, lower their standards, and pretend they don’t want anything better for themselves?

That’s how potential gets buried beneath the weight of social pressure. People begin to fear the reactions of those around them more than they value the possibilities waiting ahead of them. They become afraid to change because change might expose the people who have chosen to remain the same. They learn to make themselves smaller in order to avoid upsetting people who have no intention of growing alongside them.

I refuse to accept that as a healthy way to live. I refuse to believe that loyalty requires me to celebrate destructive behavior or that brotherhood means pretending not to notice when somebody is deliberately trying to sabotage another person’s future. Genuine love should encourage growth, and genuine friendship should make room for improvement. If somebody’s progress makes you uncomfortable, perhaps the problem isn’t their progress. Perhaps it’s time to examine what that discomfort is trying to tell you about yourself.

WHEN A YOUNG LIFE BECOMES THE PRICE OF SOMEBODY ELSE’S INSECURITY

The death of Javis Frimpong brings these concerns into painfully sharp focus. A young person should have the opportunity to grow, learn, make ordinary mistakes, discover his interests, and begin imagining the adult he might eventually become. At fifteen, life should be opening up before him. There should be room for education, friendship, family experiences, personal discovery, and the gradual development of his character. Instead, his family has been left to face an unimaginable loss.

I cannot pretend to know every detail of the circumstances surrounding his death beyond what has been described, and I will not invent motives or claim to know what was happening inside the minds of the people involved. But I can speak clearly about the larger principle. Bullying, intimidation, and violence can have devastating consequences, and no young person should have to fear for his safety simply because he is different, refuses to participate in destructive behavior, or is trying to find his own way through life.

Imagine being a father who believes that bringing his child into a different environment will give that child a better chance at the future. Imagine working day after day, making sacrifices, and carrying the responsibilities of parenthood with the hope that your son will have opportunities you may not have had yourself. Then imagine being confronted with a loss that no amount of hard work, money, or determination can reverse. The emotional weight of such a tragedy is difficult to comprehend.

A father working to provide for his child is doing something that deserves respect. He may be driving a cab, working a trade, holding several jobs, or performing work that other people overlook. None of that diminishes the importance of his effort. Responsible parenthood isn’t measured by the prestige of a person’s occupation. It’s measured by the commitment to provide guidance, protection, love, and an opportunity for a child to develop into a capable adult.

That’s why the loss of a young person reaches far beyond the immediate family. It forces a community to consider what it values, what it tolerates, and what it is willing to do to protect its children. If we can spend hours arguing online but cannot find the time to mentor a young person, intervene when bullying occurs, or create safer environments for our children, then we need to question our priorities.

We cannot bring Javis back, and no editorial or public discussion can erase his family’s pain. But we can refuse to allow his death to become another passing headline that people consume for a few days before returning to business as usual. His life should remind us that the choices young people make, the influences surrounding them, and the behavior adults tolerate can carry consequences that cannot be undone.

Justice matters. Accountability matters. And the protection of our young people must matter more than our desire to defend our image, avoid difficult conversations, or pretend that the problems affecting our communities are always somebody else’s responsibility.

STOP TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THAT DESTRUCTION IS STRENGTH

We need to take a serious look at the messages young people receive from entertainment, social media, their peers, and the adults who influence their lives. Too often, destructive behavior is presented as though it represents confidence, power, masculinity, or cultural authenticity. Violence becomes a performance. Disrespect becomes entertainment. Humiliating another person becomes a way to collect attention, approval, and online recognition.

When young people repeatedly see these behaviors rewarded with admiration, money, popularity, or fear, they may begin to believe that aggression is the fastest route to respect. They may come to believe that being feared is better than being trusted, that carrying a weapon makes them powerful, or that backing away from a confrontation makes them weak. These are dangerous lessons, especially for young people who are still learning how to manage anger, insecurity, disappointment, and peer pressure.

We should be asking what we’re teaching our children through the entertainment we celebrate and the personalities we elevate. What message does a young person receive when somebody who glorifies violence becomes a hero in his eyes? What happens when humiliation is treated as comedy and cruelty becomes a sign of social status? What kind of future are we preparing when the loudest voices around our children tell them that destruction is more exciting than discipline?

I’m not suggesting that every song, video, artist, or entertainment platform is responsible for violence. Human behavior has many causes, and we should be careful about pretending that one influence explains everything. But we also cannot ignore the power of repeated messages. What we consume can shape what we admire, and what we admire can influence the choices we make. Entertainment doesn’t remove personal responsibility, but neither should we pretend that culture has no effect on the way people see the world.

Young people need more examples of strength that have nothing to do with intimidation. They need to see men who can walk away from unnecessary conflict without feeling ashamed. They need to see people who can disagree without threatening one another, handle disappointment without becoming destructive, and build something meaningful without stepping on somebody else’s neck.

There are countless ways to channel youthful energy into something productive. Education can open doors. Skilled trades can create independence. Entrepreneurship can turn an idea into a source of income. Sports can teach discipline and teamwork. Art, music, writing, technology, and community service can give young people constructive ways to express themselves and discover their abilities.

The energy that goes into threatening somebody can be redirected toward developing a skill. The time spent plotting revenge can be invested in building a future. The desire to command attention can become the determination to accomplish something worthwhile. But that transformation requires guidance, opportunity, consistent boundaries, and a willingness to challenge destructive behavior before it becomes a way of life.

We must stop treating self-destruction as though it’s a badge of honor. We must stop confusing recklessness with courage and aggression with manhood. Our children deserve a definition of strength that prepares them to live, not one that places their lives and the lives of others in danger.

UNDERSTANDING THE ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT EXCUSING THE CHOICE

I understand that some young people grow up surrounded by hardship. Poverty, unstable homes, limited opportunities, exposure to violence, and a lack of positive guidance can make life incredibly difficult. Some children spend their formative years trying to survive circumstances that other people will never experience. We cannot talk honestly about personal responsibility while pretending that every person begins life with the same advantages.

Families need support. Schools need resources. Communities need investment. Young people need adults who can recognize their potential before a mistake becomes a pattern and a pattern becomes a crisis. We should care about the conditions that help shape behavior because those conditions influence the choices people believe are available to them.

But understanding someone’s circumstances doesn’t mean excusing everything that person does. Hardship can help explain why somebody struggles, but it doesn’t automatically make harmful behavior acceptable. We must be able to acknowledge the pressures people face while also insisting that they take responsibility for the harm they cause.

There is a difference between recognizing that somebody has been failed and declaring that the person can never be held accountable. Both things can be true at the same time. A young person may have lacked proper guidance, experienced neglect, or been surrounded by destructive influences, yet still have a responsibility to understand the consequences of his actions. Compassion and accountability are not enemies. In fact, meaningful accountability can be one of the ways we help people change.

We also need to examine the responsibilities of parents, relatives, schools, community leaders, and the wider society. Children are constantly observing the people around them. They notice how adults respond to anger, how they treat people with less power, how they handle disappointment, and whether their words match their behavior. A parent who demands respect but demonstrates cruelty is teaching a contradiction. An adult who condemns violence while celebrating aggression when it serves personal interests is sending a confusing message.

None of us can control every influence that enters a child’s life. But we can make a conscious effort to provide better examples, stronger guidance, and clearer expectations. We can teach young people to think beyond the immediate satisfaction of fitting in or proving a point. We can show them that one impulsive decision may produce consequences that last long after the emotions of the moment have faded.

A young person has a future that should be protected, but the future also carries responsibilities. Choices matter because they affect other people, sometimes in ways that cannot be repaired. If we want our children to understand that their lives have value, we must also teach them to respect the lives of others.

CHARACTER IS REVEALED BY WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR POWER

One of the clearest tests of character is the way a person treats somebody who has done nothing to threaten them. It’s easy to be friendly when there is something to gain. It’s easy to show respect when the other person has influence, money, popularity, or something you want. But what happens when you encounter somebody who cannot offer you anything? What happens when you meet somebody who is different from you, less connected than you, or simply trying to mind their own business?

Do you leave that person alone? Do you offer encouragement? Do you treat them with the same basic dignity you would want for yourself? Or do you search for an opportunity to embarrass them, intimidate them, or make them feel small?

The way we answer those questions tells us something important about who we are. Character isn’t established by the clothes we wear, the money we earn, the image we project, or the number of people who know our names. Character is revealed through the decisions we make when nobody is rewarding us for doing the right thing.

I have no admiration for people who deliberately undermine somebody else’s efforts to improve their life. I cannot applaud anyone who exploits vulnerable people, humiliates their neighbors, or treats another person’s suffering as an opportunity for entertainment. And I will never accept the argument that destructive conduct should be excused simply because the person responsible shares my racial background or comes from a community I care about.

That doesn’t mean I believe people are incapable of change. We all have histories, and some of us have made decisions we would handle differently if we could return to the past. The important question is whether we are willing to face our mistakes honestly and change the way we behave. Growth requires humility. It requires the courage to admit that we were wrong, the discipline to make different choices, and the willingness to accept that rebuilding trust may take time.

We should give people room to become better without pretending that the harm they caused never happened. Forgiveness, where it is possible, doesn’t eliminate the need for accountability. Compassion doesn’t require us to abandon our boundaries. And believing in someone’s potential doesn’t mean allowing that person to continue damaging our lives.

I have learned to pay attention to patterns. I watch how people respond when somebody else succeeds, how they talk about those who aren’t present, and whether they respect the boundaries of the people around them. I pay attention to whether their actions match their promises and whether they take responsibility when something goes wrong.

When I recognize a persistent pattern of manipulation, hostility, or destructive behavior, I don’t believe I have to remain close to it. Protecting my peace sometimes means creating distance. That’s not a declaration that somebody can never change. It’s a recognition that I am responsible for the environments I choose to maintain in my own life.

Discernment allows us to distinguish between people who are trying to build and people whose actions repeatedly tear things down. We should practice that discernment without reducing entire groups to stereotypes or assuming that one person’s conduct tells us everything about another person’s character.

BLACK IDENTITY SHOULD NEVER BECOME A WEAPON AGAINST OTHER BLACK PEOPLE

One of the greatest contradictions I see in our communities is the amount of energy some people devote to arguing about who is more authentically Black. We debate national origin, ancestry, cultural differences, historical experiences, and the labels people use to describe themselves. Some of those conversations are legitimate and deserve thoughtful attention. But too often, the discussion stops being about understanding our differences and becomes an excuse to treat one another with contempt.

Why should another Black person’s birthplace make them an enemy? Why should somebody’s African heritage or Caribbean background become a reason to question their worth? Why should a person who comes to America hoping to work, support a family, or build a better life automatically be treated as a threat to somebody who was born here?

I find that kind of hostility deeply troubling. Black Americans have a distinct history shaped by slavery, segregation, discrimination, and generations of struggles for civil and economic rights. The descendants of enslaved people in America have legitimate historical experiences that deserve recognition and serious discussion. The questions surrounding reparations, historical responsibility, and the lasting effects of racial injustice should not be dismissed or treated lightly.

At the same time, Africans and Caribbean people have their own histories, identities, struggles, and reasons for pursuing opportunities in different parts of the world. Their experiences may differ from those of Black Americans, but difference doesn’t automatically create an opposition between us. We should be capable of understanding one another without demanding that every person share an identical history.

You can honor your ancestors without insulting somebody else’s. You can advocate for reparations without treating African immigrants as enemies. You can take pride in being a descendant of enslaved people in America while recognizing that another Black person has a right to take pride in their own heritage. Respecting another person’s identity doesn’t require you to surrender your own.

I find it particularly disturbing when pride becomes a cover for resentment. If someone claims to love their community, I want to see that love reflected in the way they treat people, support families, mentor young people, and contribute to the future. Pride should inspire responsibility. It should motivate people to preserve their history, improve their institutions, and create opportunities for the next generation.

If your pride requires you to despise another Black person, what exactly is that pride producing? If your identity becomes stronger only when you can make somebody else feel inferior, perhaps the foundation needs to be examined. A healthy sense of identity should give people the confidence to stand firmly in who they are without requiring them to diminish anyone else.

There are real differences among Black communities, and pretending those differences don’t exist would be dishonest. We can have serious disagreements about history, culture, immigration, economics, and political priorities. But disagreements should lead to discussion, not automatic hostility. We should be able to challenge one another’s ideas without treating each other as enemies simply because we come from different parts of the world.

STOP BLAMING IMMIGRANTS FOR PROBLEMS THEY DIDN’T CREATE

When I hear people blame African or Caribbean immigrants for the problems affecting Black communities in America, I have to ask whether the argument makes sense. The challenges involving violence, educational inequality, economic hardship, family instability, and unequal opportunities have deep histories. They did not suddenly appear because an African immigrant arrived in an American city.

Did an immigrant create every condition that has troubled a neighborhood for generations? Did somebody who came from the Caribbean to work and support a family invent the economic barriers facing Black Americans? Did a young person who moved to America to live with his father become responsible for every social problem that existed before he arrived?

Of course not. Blaming individuals for conditions they did not create is not an honest way to examine the causes of those conditions. It may provide a convenient target for anger, but it does little to solve the problems that people claim to care about.

My own family history makes this issue personal to me. My father was Jamaican, and his heritage is part of my story. I cannot look at a person who comes from the Caribbean or Africa and assume that the person represents a threat simply because they were born somewhere else. I understand that people may have different experiences, perspectives, and expectations, but those differences should be examined through conversation and individual conduct rather than prejudice.

We must also be honest about the role resentment can play in these debates. Sometimes, seeing another person find an opportunity can remind us of opportunities we believe we were denied. Sometimes, the presence of somebody who appears to be progressing becomes a painful comparison. And sometimes, instead of examining those feelings, people direct their frustration toward the person who has become the target of their insecurity.

I cannot claim to know the motives of everyone who criticizes immigrants, and there are legitimate policy questions surrounding immigration that deserve serious discussion. But criticism of public policy is not the same as hostility toward people because of their origin. We should be able to debate laws, resources, employment, and economic priorities without turning ordinary people into convenient scapegoats.

The same principle applies to conversations about reparations. People can debate eligibility, historical responsibility, and the proper form of compensation without assuming that Africans or Caribbean people are responsible for preventing Black Americans from receiving justice. A serious discussion about historical harm should be grounded in evidence, clear reasoning, and an understanding of the institutions involved.

Our problems require thoughtful solutions, not an endless search for somebody else to blame. If a community needs better schools, we should discuss education. If young people are being lost to violence, we should examine prevention, safety, opportunity, and accountability. If families are struggling economically, we should look at employment, ownership, financial stability, and the policies that affect them.

We will not improve our circumstances by directing all our frustration toward people who share our skin color but come from a different country. We have too much work to do and too many young lives depending on our willingness to focus on what actually matters.

THE QUIET MAJORITY OF PEOPLE TRYING TO DO RIGHT

One reason I reject the idea that destructive behavior defines Black people is that I know there are millions of Black people who are simply trying to live decent lives. They get up in the morning, go to work, raise their children, pay their bills, care for relatives, support their communities, and try to make responsible decisions. They are not always visible because ordinary responsibility rarely attracts the attention that controversy and conflict receive.

A person who spends years working honestly to provide for a family may never become a trending topic. A parent who quietly guides a child through school may never receive public recognition. A young man who turns away from violence, learns a trade, and builds a stable life may not generate the attention that someone behaving recklessly receives online.

But these lives matter. They represent the kind of stability and progress that communities need. They demonstrate that Black identity is not defined by a single pattern of behavior and that no group should be reduced to the worst actions of some of its members.

When a Black person commits a crime, the responsibility belongs to the individual who committed it. When somebody behaves dishonestly, violently, or irresponsibly, that conduct should be addressed without making every person who shares their racial background responsible for defending themselves. We should be able to recognize wrongdoing without turning individual actions into sweeping judgments about an entire population.

At the same time, we must not use the existence of good people as an excuse to avoid addressing harmful patterns. Both truths matter. There are many people doing the right thing, and there are destructive behaviors that deserve serious criticism. We can recognize the first while confronting the second.

I believe we should judge people by their character, their choices, and the way they treat others. We should pay attention to whether they demonstrate respect, honesty, responsibility, and a willingness to grow. Those qualities tell us far more about an individual than a label based on race, nationality, or ancestry.

We also need to stop expecting responsible people to carry the burden of explaining every negative thing someone else has done. A person who has worked hard to build a good life should not have to repeatedly prove their humanity because somebody who shares their skin color behaved terribly. The demand for collective self-defense is unfair, and it distracts us from the more useful work of building strong families, institutions, and communities.

Our responsibility is to recognize the difference between conduct that strengthens society and conduct that damages it. We should support people who are making positive contributions, hold harmful behavior accountable, and leave room for individuals to change. That is a far more constructive approach than condemning entire populations or pretending that every criticism of destructive behavior amounts to hatred.

WHAT WE ALLOW TODAY BECOMES TOMORROW’S CULTURE

Every generation inherits something from the one before it. We inherit stories, traditions, habits, values, and ideas about what it means to live a successful life. Some of what we inherit helps us grow, while other patterns need to be questioned and changed. The responsibility of each generation is to examine what it has received and decide what deserves to be carried forward.

If we teach young people that aggression is strength, they may carry that lesson into adulthood. If we teach them that responsibility is optional, they may build relationships without understanding the obligations those relationships require. If we encourage them to treat other people’s success with suspicion, they may spend years fighting battles that have nothing to do with their own potential.

This is why responsible fatherhood matters. Fatherhood is not a trophy, a title, or proof of masculinity. Bringing a child into the world creates responsibilities that continue long after a romantic relationship ends. Children need consistency, guidance, affection, boundaries, and adults who understand that their choices can shape another person’s future.

Young women deserve relationships built on mutual respect, honesty, and responsibility. They deserve the freedom to pursue their ambitions without being trapped in repeated cycles of instability and disappointment. Young men deserve guidance that teaches them to become dependable partners, responsible fathers, and adults who understand that love is expressed through actions as well as words.

We should not use these conversations to shame people who have made mistakes or experienced difficult circumstances. People can change, families can heal, and individuals can learn to make better decisions. But improvement begins with honesty. We cannot build stronger families while pretending that repeated irresponsibility has no consequences, and we cannot create a healthier culture if we refuse to discuss the behaviors that keep hurting people.

Our children are watching what we do, not just listening to what we say. They notice whether we keep our promises, whether we respect others, and whether we accept responsibility when we make mistakes. They see how we react when somebody disagrees with us and how we treat people who cannot do anything for us in return.

If we want them to become disciplined adults, we must demonstrate discipline. If we want them to respect others, we must model respect. If we want them to reject violence, we must stop celebrating aggression whenever it serves our own interests. And if we want them to appreciate the value of human life, we must show them that dignity is not something people have to earn by pleasing us.

The future is shaped by what we normalize in the present. Every time we excuse cruelty, reward irresponsibility, or treat another person’s suffering as entertainment, we help create an environment in which destructive behavior can thrive. Every time we encourage a young person, establish a healthy boundary, or demonstrate a better way to handle conflict, we contribute to a different possibility.

WHY I CHOSE A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT FOR MY LIFE

Living in Ghana has given me the opportunity to experience a different environment and reflect on the kind of life I want to live. After spending decades in the United States, I appreciate the opportunity to observe another society, learn from different experiences, and enjoy a sense of contentment that has become important to me.

I’m not suggesting that Ghana is perfect or that every person here shares the same values. No country is free of social problems, and no population consists entirely of people who behave honorably. Every society has its challenges, and moving to another country doesn’t automatically eliminate the difficulties of being human.

But changing your environment can give you a different perspective. Sometimes, stepping away from familiar surroundings allows you to recognize which parts of your former life were no longer serving you. You may begin to see certain conflicts differently, reconsider the people you keep close, and develop a clearer understanding of what peace means to you.

For me, protecting my peace has become an important part of living responsibly. I want to spend my time doing meaningful work, developing my thoughts, sharing what I have learned, and continuing to grow as a human being. I don’t want to waste the years ahead of me being consumed by unnecessary hostility or feeling obligated to remain in situations that repeatedly undermine my well-being.

That doesn’t mean I have abandoned my concern for Black Americans or the problems affecting communities in the United States. Distance doesn’t erase family history, cultural connections, or a person’s interest in the future of their people. In many ways, seeing things from another environment can make certain issues easier to examine because you’re no longer surrounded by the same daily pressures.

My life in Ghana has also reinforced the importance of separating individual character from national identity. People are not interchangeable representatives of their countries. A person’s behavior should be evaluated on its own merits, and no society should be judged entirely by its most destructive examples.

I believe in choosing the people and environments that encourage growth, peace, and mutual respect. I believe in learning from different cultures without pretending that any culture has all the answers. And I believe that we can care deeply about where we come from while still making decisions that serve the life we want to build.

TO MY GHANAIAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS: DO NOT CONFUSE THE WORST WITH THE WHOLE

To my Ghanaian brothers and sisters, and to Black people throughout Africa and the diaspora, I want to make one thing clear. The people responsible for harmful behavior should be held accountable for their own actions, but they should not be treated as representatives of every Black American. Black Americans are not a single-minded population, and we do not all share the same values, attitudes, or beliefs.

There are Black Americans who love Africa and who want to learn more about its many cultures, histories, and traditions. There are people who value their relationships with Africans and Caribbean communities and want those connections to become stronger. There are people who believe that our different experiences can become a source of knowledge rather than an excuse for hostility.

There are also people who use social media to spread resentment, provoke arguments, and encourage divisions that serve no constructive purpose. Those voices can be loud, and because controversy attracts attention, they can sometimes appear to represent more people than they actually do. But the loudest voice is not automatically the most honest, and the most provocative opinion is not necessarily the most widely held.

Please do not allow the worst examples of human behavior to define an entire people. Judge individuals by their conduct, and leave room for the millions who are trying to live responsibly. The same fairness we ask others to extend to us should guide the way we evaluate them.

We should be able to condemn violence without condemning a nationality. We should be able to criticize prejudice without creating new prejudices in return. And we should be able to recognize that a person can do something terrible without turning that act into a permanent judgment against everyone who looks like them.

I am interested in relationships built on mutual respect, honest discussion, and a genuine willingness to understand one another. That doesn’t require us to agree about everything. It requires us to recognize that disagreement does not erase our humanity and that cultural differences don’t automatically make cooperation impossible.

My hope is that more people will approach these conversations with the seriousness they deserve. The relationship between Black Americans, Africans, and Caribbean people should not be defined solely by online arguments, stereotypes, or the behavior of a few individuals. There is far more to our communities than conflict, and there is far more we can accomplish when we choose to build rather than divide.

WE HAVE TOO MUCH WORK TO DO TO KEEP FIGHTING EACH OTHER

Look at the challenges facing our communities. We have young people who need better guidance, families that need greater stability, neighborhoods that need investment, businesses that need support, and institutions that must work harder to provide opportunity. We have educational inequalities, economic pressures, violence, addiction, and social divisions that require serious attention.

These problems deserve more than slogans and online arguments. They require people who are willing to contribute their time, knowledge, resources, and effort. They require parents who remain involved, mentors who help young people recognize their abilities, educators who believe in their students, and community members who are prepared to work together even when they don’t agree on every issue.

Imagine how much could change if some of the energy spent attacking one another were redirected toward practical solutions. Imagine more young people receiving mentorship, more families learning how to build financial stability, more businesses supporting one another, and more adults teaching children how to resolve conflict without violence. Imagine communities in which achievement is celebrated rather than treated with suspicion.

We cannot solve every problem overnight, and unity should never be used as an excuse to silence legitimate criticism. Sometimes, people need to disagree. Sometimes, difficult conversations reveal problems that have been ignored for too long. But disagreement should help us understand the challenges before us, not become an endless cycle of personal attacks and identity-based hostility.

We must learn to separate the pursuit of justice from the desire to punish people who have nothing to do with the injustice being discussed. We must learn to distinguish pride from superiority and confidence from contempt. And we must understand that building a better future requires us to take responsibility for the things we can influence rather than spending our lives fighting over everything we cannot control.

There is room for historical recognition, cultural pride, economic advocacy, and mutual respect at the same time. We don’t have to erase our differences to cooperate, and we don’t have to pretend our histories are identical to recognize the value of our shared humanity.

The real question is whether we are willing to put that understanding into practice. Will we support the people who are trying to build? Will we challenge destructive behavior when it appears among our own friends and families? Will we teach our children that another person’s progress is not a threat to their own future?

Or will we continue repeating the same arguments while another generation grows up without the guidance, support, and opportunities it deserves?

I know which direction I want to see us move in. I want to see less resentment and more responsibility, less hostility and more understanding, less energy spent tearing people down and more effort invested in helping them rise.

THE STANDARD I CHOOSE TO LIVE BY

After living long enough to observe the consequences of human behavior, I have come to believe that we must be deliberate about the principles guiding our lives. We cannot control every person we encounter, and we cannot force people to share our values. But we can decide what kind of conduct we will accept, what kind of people we will encourage, and what kind of example we will leave behind.

I choose progress over stagnation because I believe that growth remains possible throughout our lives. I choose responsibility over excuses because acknowledging our circumstances should help us make better decisions, not convince us that our decisions no longer matter. I choose discernment over blind loyalty because standing beside somebody should never require me to abandon my principles.

I want to see a culture in which education is valued, responsible fatherhood is encouraged, personal accountability is respected, and people can celebrate another person’s success without feeling diminished. I want young people to understand that they don’t have to imitate destructive behavior to belong. They don’t have to intimidate others to be strong, and they don’t have to tear somebody down to prove their own worth.

To those who are already trying to live decent lives, keep going. Continue learning, working, building, and taking care of the people who depend on you. Don’t let somebody else’s bitterness convince you to abandon your goals. Your progress has value even when it doesn’t attract attention, and your character matters even when nobody is applauding.

To those who recognize some of their own behavior in the criticism I’ve expressed, I challenge you to look honestly at your choices. You still have the opportunity to change direction. You can become more responsible, more thoughtful, and more respectful of the people around you. You can stop repeating patterns that have hurt you and others. But meaningful change begins when you stop making excuses and accept that your decisions are yours to confront.

And to the family of Javis Frimpong, I extend my deepest condolences. I cannot imagine the depth of your grief, and I recognize that no words can restore what has been taken from you. My hope is that the circumstances surrounding his death receive the serious attention they deserve, that justice is pursued through the proper legal process, and that those responsible are held accountable under the law.

Rest in peace, young Javis. Your life mattered, your future mattered, and your loss should remind us that every young person deserves the opportunity to live, grow, and discover what life might hold for them. No family should have to experience this kind of heartbreak, and no community should become so accustomed to tragedy that the loss of a young life barely interrupts its routine.

I want to see a future in which Black people across America, Africa, the Caribbean, and the wider diaspora can recognize their differences without allowing those differences to become excuses for hatred. I want to see people who are willing to confront racism, challenge injustice, support their families, and protect their children while refusing to manufacture enemies among people who share their humanity.

We have enough challenges before us without creating additional ones through envy, prejudice, and needless division. We have enough work to do without wasting our energy trying to destroy the very people who might become our strongest allies. And we have enough potential within our communities to make meaningful progress if we become more serious about how we treat one another.

My message is simple, even if the work required to live by it is not. Judge people by their conduct. Reject destructive behavior wherever it appears. Celebrate genuine progress. Hold people accountable when they cause harm, and leave room for those who sincerely want to change. Above all, never confuse the worst examples of human behavior with the full measure of a people.

I’ve chosen to spend my remaining years pursuing peace, personal growth, and meaningful work. I’ve found a home in Ghana, and I remain grateful for the opportunity to keep learning, reflecting, and sharing my perspective with those willing to listen. I cannot change every mind, solve every problem, or prevent every tragedy. But I can speak honestly about what I believe, live according to the principles I value, and encourage others to do the same.

To the good people throughout Africa and the diaspora, I wish you an abundant life filled with balance, healing, meaningful relationships, and the courage to keep building despite the challenges you face. May we learn to recognize the difference between pride and prejudice, between strength and intimidation, and between genuine unity and the demand that everyone think alike.

Our future will not be strengthened by the number of people we manage to tear down. It will be strengthened by the lives we help build, the young people we protect, the families we support, and the respect we extend to one another. That’s the legacy worth fighting for. That’s the standard worth living by. And that’s the kind of progress I want to see before my time on this earth is done.
