THE PRICE OF BEING DISCOVERED

There is something deeply troubling about a world where a person can possess extraordinary talent, natural brilliance, and an undeniable gift, yet still find themselves struggling to get recognition because someone sitting behind a desk has decided that their creativity doesn’t fit the image, direction, or financial interests of the people controlling the industry. We live in a society that constantly tells us to dream big, work hard, develop our gifts, and pursue our passions. But what happens when the very systems that supposedly exist to discover and promote talent become the biggest obstacles standing between that talent and the world? What happens when your brilliance is welcomed by ordinary people but rejected by those who control the money?

I’ve come to realize that the problem goes much deeper than simply getting a record deal, landing a movie role, publishing a book, or getting your artwork displayed in a prestigious gallery. The real issue is ownership. Who owns the direction of your creativity once someone with money becomes involved? Who decides which parts of your personality are acceptable, which messages should be removed, and which expressions must be softened before your work can be presented to the public? These are questions that every creative person should be asking before they become so desperate for recognition that they willingly surrender the very qualities that made them special in the first place.

I’ve seen talented people capture the attention of everyday people with their natural abilities, only to watch that same spark become diluted when they enter a larger entertainment structure. The humor that once made everybody laugh becomes predictable. The music that once carried an unmistakable soul suddenly sounds manufactured. The writing that once challenged people’s thinking becomes watered down and safe. And the artist who once seemed completely original begins to resemble everybody else who has already been approved by the establishment. Something happened along the way, and I don’t believe it’s always accidental.

But here’s where I believe we must turn the mirror toward ourselves. We can spend hours celebrating independent talent, sharing inspirational quotes about supporting our own, and complaining about industries that don’t give our people enough opportunities. Yet when those same talented individuals ask us to purchase a ticket, buy a painting, subscribe to an independent publication, or financially support a creative project, too many people suddenly disappear. We want the finished product, but we don’t always want to participate in the process that makes it possible. We want the entertainment, the inspiration, and the cultural representation, but we don’t always want to invest in the people providing it.

That’s why I’m bringing this conversation to the forefront. Because I believe our greatest mistake isn’t simply allowing outside institutions to control access to opportunity. It’s allowing ourselves to become so dependent on their approval that we forget we have the ability to build something of our own. We must learn to recognize brilliance before somebody with a prestigious title tells us it’s valuable. We must learn to support creativity while it’s still developing, rather than waiting until it has been packaged, polished, approved, and presented to us through some expensive corporate distribution system. And most importantly, we must understand that the greatest power we can give a creative person isn’t applause. It’s the financial support and freedom to remain true to themselves.

THE GATEKEEPERS: WHO DECIDES WHAT THE WORLD GETS TO SEE?

Let’s take a closer look at the people who control the doors to major industries. These individuals and institutions often possess something that independent creatives desperately need: access to substantial funding, distribution, influential connections, and the ability to place a product in front of millions of people. Whether we’re discussing publishing, music, movies, television, theater, or professional sports, there are people in positions of authority who can determine whether an individual’s talent receives a larger platform or remains confined to a smaller audience.

Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with having investors, executives, producers, publishers, or decision-makers involved in a creative business. Money has to come from somewhere, and people investing substantial resources naturally want to understand what they’re financing. But the problem begins when financial authority becomes creative authority, and the person controlling the money believes they should also control the artist’s voice, identity, personality, and message. At that point, we’re no longer simply discussing business decisions. We’re discussing the power to reshape somebody else’s imagination to satisfy the expectations of those holding the purse strings.

Think about how many talented writers have stories that reflect the experiences of their own communities. They understand the language, the humor, the struggles, the relationships, the traditions, and the unspoken realities because they’ve lived them. Yet when those writers attempt to enter larger publishing structures, they may discover that their stories need to be adjusted for people who don’t necessarily understand the culture they’re attempting to portray. Suddenly, the original language is considered too unfamiliar, the cultural references are questioned, and the emotional honesty of the story becomes something that needs to be explained or softened.

The same dynamic can exist in music. An artist might begin with a distinctive sound that reflects their upbringing, personal experiences, and natural creative instincts. Their early recordings might connect with people because they’re different from everything else being played on commercial radio. But once significant financial interests become involved, there may be pressure to change the sound, alter the image, rewrite the lyrics, or follow whatever formula is currently considered profitable. The artist who originally attracted attention because of their uniqueness can eventually become another product designed to fit an existing market.

And this is where I want people to understand something. Sometimes the very thing that makes an artist commercially attractive is the thing that gets removed once the industry gets involved. Their originality becomes a problem to be managed instead of an asset to be protected.

WHEN NATURAL BRILLIANCE GETS LOST IN THE SYSTEM

I remember being in Manhattan during the early and middle years of my youth and seeing a particular street comedian who could make an entire crowd laugh without needing a stage, a microphone, or a carefully prepared performance. This brother had an extraordinary ability to observe people walking by and immediately come up with something funny. He understood timing, body language, facial expressions, and the delicate line between making somebody laugh and genuinely offending them. His humor was spontaneous, intelligent, and connected to the everyday world unfolding around him.

I remember watching people gather around him because they genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. He didn’t need an elaborate production or some expensive marketing campaign to establish his ability. He simply had a gift, and the people who encountered him recognized it immediately. I also remember hearing that he might have had an opportunity to move into a larger entertainment setting, although I never learned what ultimately happened to him. What stayed with me was the brilliance I witnessed right there on the street.

Now imagine that same individual receiving an opportunity to perform on a major stage or appear in a motion picture. You would naturally expect the larger platform to amplify everything that made him special. But what happens when the opposite occurs? What happens when the spontaneous humor disappears, the personality becomes stiff, and the performance starts feeling like something created by a committee? You sit there wondering what happened to the person who once had everybody laughing without even trying.

I believe this is one of the greatest dangers facing creative people when they enter systems that prioritize commercial approval over authentic expression. The larger platform doesn’t always improve the talent. Sometimes it interferes with it. Sometimes the artist is encouraged to become more polished when what made them appealing was their natural roughness. Sometimes they’re told to become more marketable when their appeal came from being completely different. And sometimes the people who claim to be helping them develop professionally are actually teaching them how to become less recognizable to the very audience that loved them first.

We must stop confusing professional packaging with genuine improvement. A bigger budget doesn’t automatically create better art. A prestigious contract doesn’t automatically make somebody more talented. And a large audience doesn’t necessarily mean that the creative product has become more meaningful. Sometimes the smaller performer who has never received a major opportunity possesses more originality, emotional connection, and natural ability than someone who has already been promoted through an entire corporate entertainment machine.

THE SAME POWER PLAYS EXIST OUTSIDE ENTERTAINMENT

Some people might believe this discussion is limited to Hollywood, the music business, or publishing, but the same underlying problem can exist in practically every industry where individuals must receive approval from people who control access to opportunity. Professional sports, competitive bodybuilding, fashion, media, business, and even certain artistic communities can all have their own internal hierarchies.

I remember my own experiences in competitive bodybuilding and how much I admired the sport during my younger years. I was a serious amateur competitor, and I had the opportunity to learn about the business and politics surrounding bodybuilding from people who were familiar with its inner workings. One of the things that stayed with me was hearing about the way Black competitors could be overlooked for certain promotional opportunities, including magazine covers, even when their competitive achievements were undeniable. These were things I heard through conversations with people who had knowledge of the industry, and they opened my eyes to the fact that winning wasn’t necessarily the only requirement for receiving recognition.

Think about that for a moment. You can dedicate years of your life to developing your physique, discipline, presentation, and competitive ability. You can stand on a stage and demonstrate that you’ve earned your place through hard work. But when it comes time for the industry to select the faces it wants to promote, other considerations may enter the picture. The people controlling the promotional machinery can influence which athletes become household names and which talented individuals remain largely unknown outside the competitive environment.

This is why we must understand the difference between possessing talent and receiving institutional recognition. Those two things are not always connected. There are brilliant people who never receive the opportunities they deserve, and there are individuals who become widely recognized because they fit the interests and preferences of those controlling the platform. Recognition can be influenced by relationships, financial considerations, personal preferences, cultural expectations, and sometimes prejudice.

And let’s be honest about something else. When we finally see more diversity in the people receiving public recognition, we shouldn’t automatically assume that every underlying problem has disappeared. Representation matters, but representation without creative independence can still leave the artist operating within somebody else’s limitations. Having a different face on the cover doesn’t necessarily mean the person has control over the content, the direction, or the business decisions behind the product.

The real question should always be whether talented individuals have the freedom to express themselves, develop their abilities, own their work, and participate fairly in the opportunities created by their contributions.

HOLLYWOOD IS AN EXAMPLE, BUT THE LESSON IS MUCH BIGGER

When I use Hollywood as an example, I’m not suggesting that every movie executive, producer, or entertainment professional has the same intentions. I’m talking about the larger structure of influence that exists when a relatively small group of people controls the resources necessary to bring creative ideas to a massive audience.

Imagine spending years developing an original screenplay. You create characters based on real experiences, complicated relationships, cultural observations, and situations that you believe deserve to be presented to the world. You finally get an opportunity to pitch that project to people who have the money to bring it to life. But those people have their own expectations about what the audience wants, what will sell, and what kinds of stories deserve investment.

Your original concept may go through several rounds of changes. Certain characters are rewritten. Important scenes are removed. The dialogue is adjusted. The message becomes less challenging. And eventually, after enough compromises, the project that reaches the screen may barely resemble the story that originally inspired you.

Now, some revisions are part of the normal creative process. Collaboration can make a project better. But there’s a difference between improving an idea and stripping away the very identity that made it worth presenting in the first place. There’s a difference between receiving constructive criticism and being pressured to abandon your creative principles because someone else believes they understand your audience better than you do.

This is where independent platforms become so important. They provide an opportunity for creators to establish a direct relationship with the people who appreciate their work. They can publish their writing, distribute their music, display their artwork, produce their videos, and build communities without having to wait for traditional institutions to grant them permission.

And that’s one of the reasons I appreciate what independent media has made possible. I can sit down, express my thoughts, develop my ideas, and communicate directly with people who want to hear what I have to say. There’s no executive sitting over my shoulder telling me that a particular thought needs to be removed because it might make somebody uncomfortable. There’s no committee deciding whether my perspective is acceptable enough to reach the audience.

I would rather maintain that direct connection with a smaller audience that genuinely appreciates my work than become dependent on a larger platform that demands I surrender the very qualities that make my voice recognizable.

THE UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTION: WHY DON’T WE SUPPORT OUR OWN?

Now here’s where the conversation becomes uncomfortable because we cannot continue blaming outside institutions while refusing to examine our own habits. We can talk about discrimination, unfair business practices, exclusion, and the concentration of financial power, but what are we doing with the purchasing power that already exists within our communities?

We spend extraordinary amounts of money on products, entertainment, fashion, technology, luxury items, and experiences. We will stand in line for the latest designer release. We will purchase expensive clothing because a recognizable label is attached to it. We will spend money attending events, visiting establishments, and supporting businesses that may have little or no meaningful connection to the communities from which our cultural influence originated.

Yet when an independent artist, writer, filmmaker, comedian, or musician asks for support, the response can be completely different. Suddenly, people want everything for free. They want the artist to keep producing, keep entertaining, keep inspiring, and keep creating, but they don’t necessarily want to pay for the labor, equipment, time, and resources required to make it happen.

How does that make sense?

If you enjoy a comedian’s performances, purchase a ticket when they announce a show. If an independent musician releases an album, consider purchasing it rather than simply listening to a few free clips and moving on. If a talented writer has created a publication that consistently provides value, consider becoming a paying subscriber. If an artist produces a painting that speaks directly to your emotions, purchase the work if you can afford it. Put it on your wall. Let that artist know that their creativity has value beyond the compliments people leave in the comment section.

And if you cannot afford to purchase something, there are still meaningful ways to help. Share the work, recommend it to somebody who might appreciate it, attend a free event, or introduce the creator to a potential customer. Support doesn’t always have to begin with a large financial commitment, but it should become something more meaningful than empty words.

We must understand that creative people have bills, responsibilities, families, and expenses just like everybody else. Their artistic ability doesn’t eliminate their need to survive financially. A painter cannot pay for supplies with compliments. A filmmaker cannot finance an entire production with encouraging comments. A writer cannot sustain a publication indefinitely through people telling them how much they enjoy reading it.

If we want independent creativity to survive, we have to stop treating the people who produce it as though their labor should be free.

YOUR PURCHASING POWER IS A FORM OF CONTROL

One of the most powerful things consumers possess is the ability to decide where their money goes. Every purchase represents a decision to support a particular business, product, service, or individual. We may not always think about it that way, but our spending habits help determine which companies grow, which products receive more investment, and which creative voices have the resources to continue producing their work.

When we spend money on independent creators, we’re doing more than purchasing entertainment. We’re helping to create an alternative economic structure where talent doesn’t have to depend entirely on traditional gatekeepers. We’re helping somebody purchase better equipment, rent a workspace, finance another production, improve their website, or dedicate more time to developing their craft.

That’s the part of this discussion that I believe deserves much more attention. We often talk about economic empowerment as though it only applies to opening restaurants, purchasing real estate, or starting conventional businesses. But creative independence is also an economic issue. The ability to tell our own stories, distribute our own work, preserve our cultural expressions, and earn money from our ideas is a form of ownership that deserves serious attention.

Think about the difference between an artist who has to wait for an executive to approve every project and an artist who has a community willing to support their work directly. The second artist has more room to experiment, take creative risks, and remain connected to the people who inspired their work. They may not become wealthy overnight, but they have an opportunity to build something that belongs to them.

And that’s where the internet has changed the landscape. Independent platforms have made it possible for creators to reach people across geographical boundaries without necessarily needing traditional distribution companies. A writer in one country can reach readers in another. A musician can distribute original recordings internationally. A visual artist can display and sell work to customers who might never have encountered their creations through a conventional gallery.

The technology is already here. The opportunity exists. But the question remains whether we have the discipline to support these opportunities consistently.

STOP WAITING FOR SOMEBODY ELSE TO VALIDATE YOUR TALENT

To every creative person reading this, I want to make something very clear. Do not allow the possibility of rejection to become the reason you stop expressing yourself. Do not spend so much time imagining what a gatekeeper might say that you begin censoring your own ideas before they ever reach the public.

If you sing, sing from your soul. If you write, write what you genuinely believe needs to be expressed. If you paint, allow your imagination to travel wherever it needs to go. If you are a comedian, develop the unique perspective that makes people respond to your humor. If you’re a filmmaker, tell the stories that you believe deserve to be told. Don’t become so obsessed with being accepted that you forget what made you creative in the first place.

Of course, you must learn your craft. You must become disciplined, understand your industry, study your audience, and recognize that creative ability alone doesn’t automatically guarantee financial success. There are business skills that must be developed, and there are practical decisions that every independent creator must make. But learning how to operate professionally shouldn’t require abandoning your identity.

There’s also something important about understanding that not every opportunity deserves to be accepted. Sometimes the price of a particular opportunity is simply too high. If somebody offers you exposure but demands complete control over your creative direction, you have to determine whether that arrangement makes sense for your long-term interests. If a contract gives you recognition but strips away your ownership, you should understand exactly what you’re agreeing to before signing anything.

Don’t allow desperation to make decisions that your future self will regret.

And remember that there are people who will appreciate your work even if the largest institutions never recognize it. Your audience might not be millions of people. Your first customers might not be wealthy. Your first supporters might be a small circle of individuals who simply believe in what you’re doing. But those relationships can become the foundation of something meaningful if you nurture them properly.

Sometimes the most important thing a creative person can do is remain independent long enough to discover who genuinely values their work.

BUILDING OUR OWN PLATFORMS AND PROTECTING OUR CREATIVE FUTURE

I believe we must become more intentional about building platforms that allow our creative people to connect directly with their audiences. We need more independent publications, production companies, distribution networks, artistic communities, publishing opportunities, and financial partnerships that allow creators to maintain ownership of their work.

And I’m not talking about creating isolated little islands where nobody communicates with anybody else. I’m talking about building networks of mutual support where talented individuals can help one another grow. Imagine independent writers promoting independent filmmakers, musicians performing at events organized by independent businesses, and visual artists collaborating with publications that showcase their work. Imagine audiences becoming accustomed to paying for quality creative products because they understand that their purchases help keep those products alive.

That’s a completely different mindset from simply waiting for a major corporation to discover somebody and decide that they’re worthy of recognition.

We also have to become more comfortable with the idea of supporting people before they become famous. One of the unfortunate habits in modern society is that people often wait until somebody becomes widely recognized before deciding that their work deserves attention. Once a person becomes successful, suddenly everybody wants to associate themselves with that success. But where were those people when the artist was struggling to purchase equipment, finance a project, or find an audience?

We must learn to recognize potential while it’s still developing. We must understand that a talented individual doesn’t become valuable only after receiving a prestigious award, signing a major contract, or appearing on a nationally recognized platform. Their value existed before those things happened.

And this is where community responsibility comes into the picture. If we want to see more ownership, we must be willing to participate in ownership. If we want more independent voices, we must be willing to support independent platforms. If we want our stories told with honesty, we must invest in the people who have the courage and ability to tell them.

Nobody should have to wait for permission to become creatively valuable in the eyes of their own people.

THE GREATEST GATEKEEPER MIGHT BE OURSELVES

After everything I’ve discussed, I believe we must recognize that the battle over creativity is much larger than the entertainment industry. It’s about who gets to shape our cultural identity, who controls the resources necessary to distribute our ideas, and who benefits financially when our talents become commercially successful. We cannot afford to ignore the influence of those structures, but we also cannot continue behaving as though we have absolutely no power to change our circumstances.

We must stop confusing visibility with independence, popularity with ownership, and corporate approval with genuine achievement. A person can become famous and still have very little control over their creative direction. Another person can remain relatively unknown while building something meaningful, profitable, and completely authentic. The size of the platform doesn’t always reveal the strength of the creator’s position.

But I also want us to take responsibility for the opportunities that already exist. We cannot keep demanding that somebody else recognize our brilliance while refusing to recognize it ourselves. We cannot complain about the lack of independent platforms while refusing to support the ones that are already operating. And we cannot keep telling talented people to represent us when we’re unwilling to help them remain financially stable enough to do so.

The next time you encounter a talented independent artist, writer, musician, comedian, or filmmaker, consider what your support could mean to their future. Don’t automatically wait for a larger institution to tell you that the person is worth your attention. If their work moves you, support it. If their creativity makes you think, invest in it. If their talent brings something meaningful into your life, show them that their contribution has value.

And to every creative person who might be reading this, never allow somebody else’s limited imagination to become the boundary of your own. Learn the business, protect your rights, develop your skills, and understand the value of your work. You may have to navigate systems that don’t always understand you, but you don’t have to surrender your entire identity just to gain access to them. Your originality is not a weakness that needs to be corrected. It’s often the very reason people should be paying attention to you.

At the end of the day, I would rather see a thousand independent creators supported by people who genuinely appreciate their contributions than watch another generation of brilliant individuals become diluted in the pursuit of acceptance from institutions that may never fully appreciate them. We have the technology, the talent, the audiences, and the purchasing power to begin building something different. But none of it will matter until we decide to use those resources with purpose. The gatekeepers may control certain doors, but they don’t have to control every road we travel. And if we continue waiting for somebody else to give our brilliance permission to shine, we might spend our entire lives standing outside a door that we had the ability to build ourselves.
